To think the Yr 6 Reading Comprehension Test today was far too difficult?

Lottielo · 09/05/2016 15:40

Ds just home from school and very upset because he found the reading comprehension paper much harder than previous sample papers he has done in school. He didn't even finish the paper (missed out 5 questions).

Was this paper harder than expected or was my Ds not properly prepared by his school? I know it shouldn't matter too much, but I'm worried it could knock his confidence.

I also agree that the spag paper was much easier than the sample paper, which was awful.minwas waiting for the nasty questions and there weren't really any.

Not a Fred either! Grin

clam · 10/05/2016 21:10

Have to say that I though the Y6 spellings today were easier than the Rising Stars ones for Year 4.

RunnerOnTheRun · 10/05/2016 21:10

Not a Fred either! help me out here! Was there a sentence with a missing word which was friend? Maybe he wasn't called Fred?? (she is bright, honestly!!)

FranHastings · 10/05/2016 21:10

DD said she thought her teachers had prepared them really well which is lovely.

clam · 10/05/2016 21:15

'Friend' did not appear anywhere on the test at all, as a missing word to fill, or as the surrounding context. She just has the name wrong.

RunnerOnTheRun · 10/05/2016 21:16

Utterly bizarre. That's really floored us, she remembers it clearly. Oh well. Too ridiculous to keep going over it.

clam · 10/05/2016 21:18

But the hair colour is right! Grin Ryan

RunnerOnTheRun · 10/05/2016 21:20

Lol clam that's hilarious! Maybe she is all tested out for now and the finer details are long gone. Shows how ridiculous it all is!

We have been doing some seriously hard core SATs preparation this morning -

I think it's called having fun....

littlequestion · 11/05/2016 11:04

Michael Rosen has said this on Facebook

Don't suppose there's a problem (innocent look) if pupils who did Scholastic and Sims booklet found KS2 Reading paper 'familiar' ??????????

Can anyone shed any light?

upthegardenpath · 11/05/2016 11:32

My DD is only in Y3 but we have good friend with kids in Y6 (various schools) and they've all been reporting back about children in tears and struggling this week.

What the bloody hell are the examiners thinking?!

How on earth is this benefitting children in any way, shape or form?

stress levels seem fairly low in our school this week have to say.

littlequestion · 11/05/2016 14:26

Should he be saying something like that as there will be some children who haven't sat it yet due to illness etc.

littlequestion · 11/05/2016 16:24

I've reported my own comment to mumsnet in case they want to take it down.

What have SATs got to do with MNHQ?

heavenlypink · 11/05/2016 18:16

The arithmetic paper was pretty much what my school had been practicing - no nasty surprises. The reasoning paper was okay a couple of troublesome questions. There was a 3 mark question which surprised me, gives a bit of an insight as to what tomorrow's paper could bring .......

ineedaholidaynow · 11/05/2016 18:22

You are not allowed to mention any actual content of the papers until 20th May (I think) as children can still take the test up until next week if they have missed it this week due to illness

The maths papers today were pretty straightforward, nothing in them to catch the children out I didn't feel. Both of the children I sat with today ,who are admittedly of higher ability, found them both OK and finished well within the time limits. The reading test wasn't great, in my opinion some of the answers could not be inferred from the text given and relied on language knowledge which is not what these tests are meant to test!

AngieBolen · 11/05/2016 18:59

No wonder kids are stressed if their parents are questioning them and wanting a postmortem of each test.

I don't have an issue with the curriculum being more difficult, or children being tested at the end of primary school, but when parents are getting this worked up, and passing the tension on to their DC it's just silly.

The most important thing in DDs day was that Mr X, the chair of governors came into school. Apparently he did nothing, but it seemed to be far more important than any test she did today.

Why are you all so bothered? Is it becuase of setting in Y7 and targets for Y11?

Or are you competitive about their actual score?
