Stick to the story, make it believable and don't be a prat?

I know it's shitty to troll and I hate it but at least make it a decent attempt when you do so!

Anything slightly unbelievable and longer than 100 posts gets put in classics these days.

It's kind of useful in a way, if you see something's in classics, you know it is either made up, not very funny at all, or mentions genitals.

Can I add that we need a sockpuppeting 101 course? Y'know, when 4 people all strangely new to MN post within 2 minutes and 30 seconds of each other all saying the same thing in the same way and replying not to the OP but to the poster directly above them, well....it makes me do a chinny reckon.

I'm waiting for a corker to be "not usually deleted but when a poster asks us to for privacy yada yada" to go later today.

LoveFromUs · 09/05/2016 10:23

I also read the one about "the 16 year old with broken arms" I couldn't believe that someone would actually make something like that up, it was disgusting how the "person" was getting rather intimate about the places where she would have to wash him.

I just hope to God that the "person" didn't have children of their own!

BathshebaDarkstone · 09/05/2016 10:26

YANBU, my 4yo DS could do better than some of them.

hawaiibaby · 09/05/2016 10:28

doctor thanks. That is a lot of effort. So in this case, when it isnt a goady type of troll, is it reasonable to suggest the op is pretty lonely to bother with so much time and effort? It's quite sad really.

I didn't guess troll at all, but did wonder what her sick dd was doing all the time she was updating us! And in hindsight yes that was farfetched about her prosecutor DH! Grin I'm clearly not suspicious enough!

But if we didn't have trolls, we'd never have had Balonz.

IPityThePontipines · 09/05/2016 10:33

There was an incredibly obvious and rather unpleasant troll thread a few months ago.

I reported it to MN so many times, explained exactly why it was a troll and they did nothing.

Unless the poster is a PBP, they'll let a lot of things fly.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 09/05/2016 10:33

Or mm or thingy, wazzername, the weirdo who reckoned she lived in a caravan with Our Lass but was really a restaurant owner who wrote her own reviews. What the feck was her name?

hawaiibaby · 09/05/2016 10:34

paul I don't know if pubzilla is deleted now but it was a woman who went batshit because her friend wouldn't come to an extra part of her hen do, two hours away because her dd was sick. The hen was vile and we were given screen shots of arguments and text messages and live updates from the op while pubzilla was sat rowing with her. Describing it like that I'm not sure why u believed it Confused but I just don't get a troll's motivation with this kind of post, just pure attention and some validation? dons pop psychology hat

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 09/05/2016 10:34

There's Balonz, and the then there's actual horrible trollery, right? :(

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 09/05/2016 10:35

I think most common-or-garden trolls are pretty thick, so it doesn't take much to catch them out.

They tell too much of a good yarn to pull you in. Which can be unravelled in seconds.

Beesimo, that's her. The restaurant one.

hawaiibaby · 09/05/2016 10:35

*why I believed it, not you!

I think most trolls revel in the fact that their threads hover on the edge of believability- It would be incredible simple to write completely believable fake threads but I don't think that provides the same satisfaction to the fantasists.

The perverted ones and dead kid ones are just revolting. I report ALL the time and don't post on dodgey threads. It's hard not to post 'warning' posts on threads that I think are fake. It's against MNHQ and I think the trolls like it.

Some posters are really gullible though.

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2016 10:49

I think there's an element of trolls not working alone. it's definitely a case of 'watch what happens when i post this on MN it will be hilarious' sometimes.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 09/05/2016 10:54

There are some people who just seem to lie about mundane, everyday stuff. It's strange. Nothing exciting, like the wedding one last night. The other threads by that poster were just normal stuff.

OP posts:
IPityThePontipines · 09/05/2016 10:54

Beesimo still comments on The Guardian and still says that she's a traveller (I missed the restaurant bit).

I'm remember lying in a hospital bed, feeling very sorry for myself when I read the infamous thread on which DDLass turned up. It was brilliant Grin

MatthewWrightIsThick · 09/05/2016 11:01

I think a fair few of the threads in classics are troll threads. There are some famous oft quoted ones that seem very fake to me.

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2016 11:04

The very famous one that everyone was roaring with laughter at-no way was that real.

MatthewWrightIsThick · 09/05/2016 11:12

Sparking Very true

BillBrysonsBeard · 09/05/2016 11:12

I agree with Sparkling and imagine a group of people from another forum laughing about seeing a load of women eat up their story. Hilarious to them and also controlling.. They're loving that their words are making hundreds of people react, get sad, shocked, disgusted..

And some I imagine to be people with serious mental health issues doing it because they want the attention and on some level almost believe that is happening to them. They're probably gutted when people start disbelieving.

These are just what I imagine so might not be true!
