Basically, our local sainsbury's had taken loads of the normal tills out and replace them with a few more God forsaken self service machines. Now, personal feelings of hatred aside, they haven't increased the staff manning them, so, where there were four machines and one member of staff attending to them, there are now 8, and still one memeber of staff.

It really bloody takes the piss IMO. One poor sod, basically doing the job of 8 checkout assistants, as the things never fucking work, while everybody looks pissed off with their stupid light going off.

And if it wasn't bad enough, to get your car parking money back (one of those "you buy a ticket and its refunded in store" ones) you have to physically give it to said poor sod, who refunds you out of their bum bag, no option on the stupid till!

Right. Sorry for the rant. No, it doesn't get more interesting.

All the big stores are making losses on their online shopping. It's more expensive for them to pick the goods and deliver to your door. They do it because they have to. Customers demand it and will use Ocado or whoever is offering it if their usual supermarket doesn't. So I think if the self scanners stopped people buying they would be removed even if on paper they're cheaper to run.

ErrinPerrin · 11/05/2016 14:55

I'm willing to be first in line for this new not working thing and can think of plenty of better things the government can pay me to do if they're up for it.

Offred · 11/05/2016 14:59

Why not the government? Private companies have no obligation to citizens beyond paying taxes and it would need centralisation.

It is no different in principle to centralised administration of healthcare through the NHS.

Doubt supermarkets are making actual losses on Internet shopping or OCADO would never have got off the ground at all what with it being exclusively Internet or Abel and Cole which is internet/phone, and I don't think Amazon would be moving into selling groceries.

The idea that society is unproductive without individuals being forced into paid employment no matter what it is is liberal paternalistic ideology that is behind workfare and low wages and the destruction of the trade unions etc it is not based on a solid evidence based foundation (or even a particularly shaky one really).

glassgarden · 11/05/2016 15:25

I think the truth is more that there isnt enough useful work to go round...we dont need everyone to work 40 hours a week anymore

of course work isnt just a way to allocate money it can also give a sense of meaning and purpose..or just keep people occupied so that they are too stressed and busy to think about the various ways in which they are exploited

falange · 11/05/2016 16:47

glassgarden There speaks a person who isn't at risk of losing their 'menial' job.

Offred · 11/05/2016 17:01

Paid work isn't the only thing that contributes to society either or the only thing that can be called 'work'.

I don't think you can know anything about glassgarden.

I think if you are at risk of losing your job what you would be worrying about is losing the ability to eat, have a home etc, the stigma and the hardships piled on unemployed people. I'm not sure that if you had a free choice over how to spend your days many people would choose stacking shelves or checkout work.

BoatyMcBoat · 11/05/2016 17:48

Back in the 70s, Harold Wilson thought that we would never see full employment again, so embarked on a country-wide leisure centre building programme, so there were places people could go during their many free hours, where people could congregate, which would become the focal point of the community, etc.

Perhaps Cam could be persuaded to revisit the idea?

Ha ha ha ha ha! Well he is a 'modern' Tory!

Dakin1 · 11/05/2016 17:57

Can't stand Sainsburys but at least it serves a purpose and keeps the scum out of Waitrose Wink

falange · 11/05/2016 20:22

SmileI used to like aldi until it became the haunt of a certain breed of mumsnetters, feeling smug because they're slumming it. 😀

GarlicShake · 11/05/2016 21:43

There was a couple in Aldi this afternoon, falange, earnestly comparing notes on relative quality between Morrison's & Aldi versions of practically everything in the store.

I thought better of informing them the two chains buy a lot of their stuff from the same producers Wink

I was subjected to a rant by a Sainsburys check out lady as I asked her politely not to call me love - pet hate come down from my mother!. The rant was so offensive and rude that at least one other customer told her to calm down. She carried on and was aggressive and her language was absolutely appalling. Shocked faces all round. That aside, I have requested the CCTV which Sainsburys promised me. They have had at least 2 months and not only have they not sent me the tape as promised but have ceased to respond to my e-mails. They assured me that as I had lodged a complaint the tape would not be destroyed.

Can anyone suggest how I can get the tape?
Many thanks

Oh fuck off user your thread was deleted and I'm reporting your post here

PinkSnowAndStars · 12/07/2016 11:50

Reported!

5Foot5 · 12/07/2016 13:37

I like the way Morrisons self service tills say 'surprising item in the bagging area.' I imagine the till thinking 'shockshockshock WHAT THE HELL IS THAT?'

Ha ha! Yes that happens to me in Morrisons every time. I mean, how surprising can it be given that it is something that they sell? The first time it happened I roared with laughter and so did the people walking past who overheard. By now it has become less amusing. I just shrug and tell the assistant I have gone and surprised it again.

Now I never have any trouble in Sainsburys.

MardyKnickers · 12/07/2016 17:18

Complain to the head office but don't complain about a specific store as the staff will just get roasted off senior management.

I work in food retail for a retailer whose entire business plan is, maximise profit by stripping the staff out of stores to the nth degree, they will waste money willy nilly on rebrands and rejigs and reworks but god forbid they'll actually put staff in their stores.

The poor staff who are serving you are probably working about 80 hours a week and getting paid for about 40, as the business won't allow them enough hours, but they really do give a shit about their store and their customers so they're killing themselves just to keep the doors open.

Then their jobs are put at risk through self service. Then further put at risk through the business becoming less profitable due to increased theft, customers getting pissed off due to queues/stock not on shelf etc, as there's no one on the shopfloor any more!

Sad. But do do do complain!!

LynneB59 · 12/07/2016 19:06

There's a VERY simple solution - shop elsewhere. FFS.
