To ask if it's a good thing that London has a Muslim mayor

Because my London based in-laws are not happy and I've not been following the campaign as I'm not in London so don't really care. However, we're seeing PILs this weekend and it will be up for discussion.

Well done Sadiq. Never forget that Goldsmith voted for the disability cuts. He is the ultimate Tim nice but dim who has no mind of his own.

Lndnmummy · 07/05/2016 08:04

It is not a good thing, it is not a bad thing. IT ISNT A "Thing" of any sort. This is a human rights lawyer who has been elected by the Londoners. Thats all. Simples

tilder · 07/05/2016 08:09

No, I wasn't trying to be witty. Maybe it was a little late at night and I was tired. I just read your post saying 'my pils aren't racist but'. I struggle with that particular phrase.

So yes, am sorry they are fearful. But then given his track record, previous occupstion, it does appear a little unfounded.

oldjacksscrote · 07/05/2016 08:25

I think it's great, those who wrongly use the Muslim faith as an excuse to incite hate and terror are trying to create an 'us and them' but this shows they're not winning, IMHO.

AugustaFinkNottle · 07/05/2016 09:04

Cleo, why the hell should Nadiya Hussain do anything except bake cakes?

Nydj · 07/05/2016 09:09

For those wondering what Zac will do now, I expect he will finally have time to watch all his favourite Bollywood films and memorise the names of those films as well as of his favourite Bollywood actors.

Theoretician · 07/05/2016 09:17

Blair, Brown and Milliband led Labour up a blind alley. Corbyn is quietly realigning the party to forward a more socialist agenda.

I hope your views are representative of most Labour supporters. The last time a Labour prime minister other than Blair was elected was 40 years ago, with your help we can make it another 40 years before the next one.

Theoretician · 07/05/2016 09:19

Sorry, that's a bit sarcastic. It's just that from where I stand you do seem to be living in a bit of a bubble.

limitedperiodonly · 07/05/2016 09:22

Grin I know. How hard can it be? 'I'm got to go to some Bollywood thing tonight. It sounds like a balls ache to me. I don't give a fuck about Indian films. Too much singing and dancing. But some smartarse is bound to test me on them. So just give me a few names - and I don't want any that are hard to pronounce.'

BaboonBottom · 07/05/2016 09:23

I can't wait for trump to meet him. Will he even be allowed to visit the US?

AlbertHerbertHawkins · 07/05/2016 09:29

To ask if it is a good thing that London has elected a Muslim mayor is like asking if it is a good thing that London has elected a left handed mayor, or a mayor who 'dresses to the right'. I.é. totally irrelevant. People should be judged on their record and their policies (and whether or not they are a tory)

ThisCakeFilledIsle · 07/05/2016 09:35

I agree in an ideal world Albert and yet the BBC this am is leading with the "first Muslim mayor"..so they find it newsworthy.

PastaLaFeasta · 07/05/2016 09:38

I voted for him, he's more like me and therefore better able to represent me - someone from an ordinary background trying to better themselves and their kids who happens to be a moderate/liberal religious person too, albeit a different religion. Also like the many people, including Muslims, I've met at school/university/work and in general life. And I'm a lefty so many shared views and concerns.

How in hell could Zac Goldsmith ever understand the real world concerns of typical, average wealth or poorer people. I used to live in his constituency and thankfully he doesn't need to consider those people much - pre kids when we had more money - thank fuck he isn't representing a demographic (much of London) his party is trying to demonise and crush in favour of their wealthy buddies.

Lemonade1 · 07/05/2016 09:40

Not read any other replies.

Yes it's good thing. I'm delighted on many levels.

Though for some stupid people round the world (Mr Trump I'm looking at you and your comedy toupee) it will just underline the 'fact' that London is 'run by Islamic terrorists' Hmm

readytorage · 07/05/2016 09:41

I think it's a great thing.

araiba · 07/05/2016 09:46

lots of places have had muslim mayors- those cities are still going

BigChocFrenzy · 07/05/2016 09:55

Good job, London !

Sadiq Khan looks an excellent choice:
. modern & cosmopolitan like his city
. supports womens' rights very vocally
. supports same sex marriage (& brave enough to continue when he received a fatwa for it)
. no party hack - distanced himself from Corbyn & Livingston
. inclusive of all races & religions, or no religion, deliberately reaching out to those of the Jewish faith:

http://www.thejc.com/news/uk-news/145335/interview-sadiq-khan-believe-me-i-wont-be-another-ken-livingstone

"I’m completely comfortable in a synagogue, you’re perfectly comfortable with me, even though we’re of different faiths."

“What’s important to me is that we have zero tolerance of antisemitism.
I will ensure there are sufficient police resources and the resources of City Hall to address this issue."
He speaks out against against boycotts of Israel.

NI should learn from London !

AugustaFinkNottle · 07/05/2016 10:00

It's a very good thing that London doesn't have that idiot Goldsmith for mayor. Your London-based in-laws should be very thankful for that. The fact that Khan is Muslim is utterly irrelevant.

AugustaFinkNottle · 07/05/2016 10:03

On another tack, did anyone hear Michael Fallon being interviewed on Today this morning? It was hilarious hearing him desperately twisting and turning as he tried to distance himself and the Conservative party from any suggestions that might have been made that London under Khan is in danger. Under a lot of pressure he eventually had to admit that he didn't think anything of the sort.

MinesaBottle · 07/05/2016 10:10

Just goes to show how the constant demonising of Muslims by certain sections of the media and politicians has sunk in, when so many people (not on here for the most part!) seem more concerned that he's a Muslim and never mind his track record which includes a stint in the Cabinet. He's been a good MP and I hope he'll be a good Mayor.

123lekl · 07/05/2016 10:16

The fact he's a Muslim isn't a good or bad thing...... it's just a fact about him. The fact he was voted as mayor because people thought he was the best candidate is what matters. I think he'll be great :-) (fwiw!)

raisedbyguineapigs · 07/05/2016 10:21

Ipity not that they necessarily have to speak out if they want to, but just be there, living their own lives, winning baking competitions, despite closet racists within and without their own community who like to perpetuate the myth that all Muslims are fundamentalists.

AlbertHerbertHawkins · 07/05/2016 10:21

Well, Thiscake the BBC may well find it newsworthy that London has elected it's first Muslim Mayor, and there is no denying that is is an historic event, but just because the BBC finds it newsworthy doesn't mean really that is is anything to focus on too much.
The man is more than his ethnicity and religion. I for one have become increasingly concerned about BBC coverage of news over recent months. I find that their impartiality is more and more questionable.

AlbertHerbertHawkins · 07/05/2016 10:21

In question not questionable!

ThisCakeFilledIsle · 07/05/2016 10:25

Imo The BBC are obsessed with identity politics full stop, particularly their website which I avoid more and more. I think I am getting too old for the beeb!
