re. DD's injury -blood in knickers

DD is 10. She fell off the trampoline a couple of hours ago and landed hard on her bum, one leg up in the air. (Net velcro gave way.)

Anyway, she cried and said it really hurt her bum (for about 30 seconds), then got up and said she was fine. I suggested she (and her friend who's sleeping over) went inside and played quietly for a bit before dinner.

About half an hour after the fall, she went to the loo and found blood in her knickers. Not loads but more than a drop. It wasn't bleeding any more -she wiped with some loo roll and there was nothing there but she said she didn't need to wee any more and still hasn't been.
I've looked and can't see any visible cuts or bruises so hard to know exactly where the blood came from.

She's absolutely fine in herself, says it doesn't hurt at all and has no tummy pain.
I decided to keep an eye on her, check her wee for blood when she goes and see how she is tomorrow.

However I'm a bit churned up and wondering if I should have taken her to a doctor to get checked out? My rational side says she's fine and the bleed was minor and stopped by itself but my anxious mum side won't calm down.

Deadgood - I know hymens are not fictitious but it just wouldn't have occurred to me that it could get broken like that.

Dd broke her hymen falling off a pony. Took a nasty tumble, bit battered and bruised and blood in her knickers later that day.

I think mine went the same way. Distinctly remember a fall which resulted in me thinking af was early that month for it to disappear overnight then come back at the right time.

Maybe a bit of a salt bath in case she is a bit sore?

popmimiboo it was pretty awful, we got an awful fright but then the hymen didn't cross my mind at all, but she was clearly in a lot of pain and when I took off her underwear the blood literally fished to the floor so.

If the blood has stopped then the others are probably right. But your not an anxious mum at all, if she's ok in herself though I'm sure she'll be fine

Straight to the hospital, this happened to my son when he was younger and he was told he may need an op, just because people are saying that its the hymen doesnt mean to say it is.

So bizarre that this is trending tonight as I just came onto laptop to look for similar thing.

My 4 year old had a riding lesson today, tonight when getting into bath I noticed dried blood in her knickers. Obviously had a panic, she said nothing hurt, I had a little look and couldn't see any cuts. She is fine in herself. Now I'm wondering whether it could have been her hymen? Aged 4? But what else could it be? I don't know when blood came as you only noticed herself at bath time and that was 4 hours after her lesson.

I think I will sleep a lot better thinking it's her hymen.....

When she found the blood, did she have a wee then? Or did she not go & still hasn't been?
I'd be a tiny bit worried about her bladder is all. maybe make sure she wees before bed?

Clutter -she has just been and no blood.
As she's having a sleepover, she's in bed watching a film, not asleep, so I'll pop up in a bit and check on her again.

Sorry I know I'm coming across as a crazy old lady here but this thread is blowing my mind. Yes, a hymen can be broken at age 4. It is there from birth! It is not something that appears just in time to be broken when virginity is lost.

Noshow I thought it was common knowledge that hymens can and often are broken in this way. Doing the splits, falling on stuff, horseriding, it happens alllll the time. I see now that not everyone knows this ... which I find weird!

Again. I know I'm being a dick. Soz.

I think it's very likely to be her hymen OP, I had a very similar injury at about the same age because I decided to sit on a low cupboard door . Was all fine. Obviously if she has further bleeding or complains of pain then you should seek medical attention for her, but I doubt it's anything serious if it's stopped already. Bloody pants in boys would obviously be more alarming because it's always abnormal, even if not necessarily sinister.

It sounds as though it's her hymen, IMO. When I was about your DD's age, mine broke when I fell on the crossbar of my bike. I had similar bleeding to what you describe. But maybe just for the sake of reassuring yourself and DD, see a doctor?

This happened to my 4 year old recently - she fell at school and, from what I can make out, ended up straddling part of the climbing frame. I was a bit perturbed as no one saw it and she couldn't really explain what happened, but I called the GP who was very reassuring and said it was fairly common in young girls for falls to lead to bleeding like this. I only noticed when she was changing for gym club and her pants were covered in dried blood.

It happened to me at school when I was around the same age. I was walking along a balance beam and fell straight onto it. I bled a little then and remember even now how painful it was but I was fine after.

I had this when l rode a boys bike and landed on the crossbar it stung more than anything and just a very small amount of blood...... think it may be her hymen . Keep a good eye on her sweetie hope she is ok

I broke mine falling on a wooden fence aged about 8 - I just remember blood in my knickers and eaves dropping on my mum talking to my grandma about it (what you did I guess in the days before MN!) and whether she should be worried - they discussed me being too young for that - now I guess it would have been starting my periods .
DD1 fell off a stool at around 3 and had a small amount of blood in her pants - that's what I thought it was but the dr said it wasn't -it was still intact...so no idea where it came from - they did say it was nothing to worry about (they were more worried that she'd broken her pelvis)
DD2 also had some blood in her pants at around 7 - she had been on a trampoline but also riding a too small bike (a friend's younger siblings) and fell on the seat and hurt her bottom...

I don't remember breaking mine, whirly, but it definitely wasn't there when I started doing sexual activity! Some women's are thicker than others, and they have a hole in the middle which can be any size from tiny to hardly any hymen there at all.

Presumably you and I were lucky to have thin, holey ones

My first year at secondary school, hymens were popping all over the place during gym.

I broke my hymen falling on the crossbar of my BMX aged about 10.
It bled a bit then stopped, but like pp I remember it hurting like fuck for a minute.

I reckon hymen op don't worry!

Also a friend broke hers doing some energetic dance move, she thought she was going to die, bless her!

My DD had the misfortune to fall off a window frame onto the metal corner edge of a BBQ (she was trying to clean the window for me!) & cut her labia very badly :( A&E job. Admission to hospital ward & surgery with GA to stitch it up.

Everyone at the hospital was more concerned about swelling stopping DD from being able to wee than the actual cut & stitches.

Your DD sounds fine but it might be worth checking she has had lots to drink & can still wee OK. I hope she enjoys her sleepover.

I agree with the people saying hymen breaking - happened to me at primary school when I was 9, and my mother (who happens to have been a paediatrician)turned purple when I told her, pulled me into the bathroom, stood right up against the door and gave me the most jumbled explanation of periods you could possibly imagine (left me thinking it was some kind of primitive tribal rite of passage that only happened once and which you came out the other side of as A Woman ready to have babies, but that it was also the most embarrassing thing in the world ever...)

It was only looking back on it as a teenager, having heard what a hymen was and heard of them breaking horse riding etc. for other people that I thought d'oh, that's what happened when I was 9... It was another 2 years til I actually did start my periods (and didn't tell my mum for a several months).

Ironically my 9 year old friends, whom I confided in immediately in the girls toilets, handled it perfectly matter of factly despite having no accurate idea what the actual source of the blood was an advising me that it was just a cut somewhere out of sight but I should probably tell my mum when I got home...

Envious. Mine was like leather. It took 4 goes at intercourse (on 4 separate days) before the bloody thing completely tore.
