I know I'm being unreasonable, posting here for traffic! Me and DP will be getting married without telling anyone (We're just doing this bit for 'legal' reasons hoping to have a renewal of vows later on with family attending etc etc) BUT we have no one we can trust enough (to not spill the beans) to ask to be our witnesses, we need 2.
I know I can pull 2 randomers off the street, but would people likely be happy to do this? have you done this (as the witness or the bride+groom?) I'm also nervous in case we can't find anyone willing and we need to cancel or postpone so would rather have someone set up if that makes sense?
Would you pay someone to do it? We're getting married in a place we don't reside or visit often because we know someone who works in the local one so in theory could post on a local buy and sell site offering a small incentive (ie bottle of wine, lift, gift voucher, tenner?) for doing it, would this work?
I appreciate any feedback!

I will definitely be asking when I give notice but I thought i'd ask just in case, Think I may even prefer mumsnetters haha!
We're close enough to drive there+back but if we do end up staying in a hotel (finances allowing as we're currently saving up for something else) asking staff members is definitely an idea!

Well I promise not to dress my daughter in anything that could be construed as a bridesmaid dressGrin

MiddleClassProblem · 04/05/2016 14:02

Omg I'd love it if 20 mns end up turning up Grin

Definitely go for it and have a drink after because even if it isn't how you hope to eventually do it, it's still a lovely significant day x

Awww, But that would be so adorable
(Don't think I'm the best example of a mumsnet bride to be honest Halo )

Park Circus is lovely. My friend got married there a few years ago. And i live in Glasgow too. I can provide an adorable toddler who likes to call out 'Bootiful Lady' lots these days Grin

I used to work in the Council Offices which were linked to the Registry office, and the Registrar used to come in and ask for volunteers to be witnesses every now and then, so we would nip out of work for 15 mins to go to a wedding!

It was great in the summer as on a Friday you could have up to 4 weddings arriving throughout the day by the office window and having photo's outside.

2 of my colleagues witnessed one lovely wedding which was for a couple in their 70's who had both been widowed, but had originally been married to a brother and sister, so were already BiL and SiL. They hadn't told their families but had arranged a party for that evening when they were going to tell them.

LordoftheTits · 04/05/2016 14:22

I'm in Glasgow! Me! Pick me!

LordoftheTits · 04/05/2016 14:23

The big registry office in town is literally outside my work, pick meeeee!

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 04/05/2016 14:27

A MN wedding! How lovely!

Very best wishes OP Flowers

I'm near Glasgow and would do it if I was free at the time. If I was stopped in the street I might initially be hesitant thinking it was someone stopping me for other reasons but once I found out why I'd be more than happy.

Putty · 04/05/2016 14:45

I'm in Edinburgh and ill happily go over by train depending on time and DCs etc. I might even ask you to return the favour sometime!! (Been meaning to quietly tie the knot for ages and just haven't got around to it.)

I thought the Park Circus office was closed now, and the building up for sale? I could be wrong..

HelpMeGetMarried · 04/05/2016 14:47

On google it appears to still be fine+ active (Although i've not actually called or anything, so could be wrong) Looks like DP might not get the venue he wants after all hope he doesn't have a groomzilla meltdown

I'm in North Essex, I'd dress up for you and come along.

Love a good wedding.

Twinkie1 · 04/05/2016 14:50

Oh reread!

Glasgow a bit far!

lalalalyra · 04/05/2016 14:51

I think you need ID to be a witness so double check that. DH and I did it for a couple when we were giving notice for our wedding. It was so nice :)

I thought the same. You can get married in City Chambers, and it's beautiful.

FlyingElbows · 04/05/2016 14:52

I got married at Park Circus too Grin. They're very helpful, if you phone them I'm sure they'd advise you if they can help out with witnesses.

I'm sure we'll find somewhere :) (venue isn't all that important to either of us, i'm not fussed at all and park circus was DP's preferred choice but doesn't really care haha) I think you can name the witnesses in advance or on the day, Thats at least what I read earlier (to be fair i've had quite a bit of bad luck with contradictory information!)

You can get married 28 days after giving notice so they def would legally need something 6 weeks before

FV45 · 04/05/2016 15:01

It's a bit sad you don't know 2 people you can trust enough to respect your wishes and keep you secret.

MiddleClassProblem · 04/05/2016 15:02

Wouldn't! Not would

thomassodorisland · 04/05/2016 15:03

I'm near Glasgow I'm willing to witness.
I also get married this year so understand the excitement of getting married.

sohelpmegoad · 04/05/2016 15:03

I can only say where I work, in Scotland, but everyone in my office gets asked to put on their glad rags for a wedding regularly, and its really lovely to be involved. However we are rural and you might not be able to find witnesses on the street here
