AIBU to be a bit scared of what I've just seen in my shed

Pictured here. I think I've seen these before but not so many or so big. I thought they were just some feature in the wood of a cheap shed Confused but now I realise something or somethings have actually (gulp) built them. It looks like something(s) is living in them. I saw something winged on one of them Shock then I ran away.

Could have been worse. Remember some wasps invaded someone's spare room a few years ago and built a nest on the bed?

Oo, something nasty in the wood shed. Is the sukebind out?

IThinkIMadeYouUpInsideMyHead · 03/05/2016 20:13

Put a jam jar around one, use the lid to scrape it off the timber and screw the lid shut. Then dump them humanely.

We had to get rid of a rugby ball sized one last year. Small bit more complicated Shock

iMatter · 03/05/2016 20:20

Wasps.

I agree with the suggestion to burn the shed down.

Then burn the house down too, just in case.

nippiesweetie · 03/05/2016 20:21

Feckless has lost another leg.

Vaara · 03/05/2016 20:29

Burn it.

Burn it down.

Toffeecrispy · 03/05/2016 20:37

There is a wasp nest near my window and every summer i have them on the window trying to get in. Hoping they have disappeared this summer.
To my surprise i realise wasp come out at night which i never knew before.
Get rid of that nest before they come out, they do look so cool though but are a nightmare to get rid of if hatched

Outcomesthebunnyofdeath · 03/05/2016 20:43

*Is one pink and the other one blue?

Do the wasps have segregated facilities where you live?*

I can't stand the gender stereotyping they force on wasps nowadays

Outcomesthebunnyofdeath · 03/05/2016 20:44

Bold fail

SpidersFromMars · 03/05/2016 20:46

You can buy a spray that kills on contact. We had a nest under our shed and had to do this. Its a shame but they were nasty agressive wasps that otherwise made our garden unusable.

FluffyPineapple · 03/05/2016 20:47

Its a wasps nest. We get these in our shed every Spring. Clever how they make them but I agree they are unwanted. Take a wallpaper scraper and a container. Scrape the top of the nest, whack it into the container, put it a bag, tie it and take it to the refuse dump. Then wait til next Spring and do it all again :)

Get some bees. We used to have loads of wasps, then someone put a beehive next to our house and the wasps are all but gone.

On a possibly more practical note just a sweater and some thick gloves will do the trick - I have to clear three or four nests a week from my mailbox, and have yet to be stung.

Those don't look like german wasp nests (the most aggressive type ime) so you should be OK anyway.

LittleHouseOnTheShelf · 03/05/2016 20:53

Wasp's nests.
It could be worse, they could be spider's eggs.

Crumblevision · 03/05/2016 20:55

Streuth - that wasps nest on the bed 😳. Ruined a perfectly nice crocheted blanket by the looks of it too

herethereandeverywhere · 03/05/2016 20:59

I'm sure I read somewhere that the little round ones are where the queen hibernates before she colonises a new big nest in the spring. We had them in the attic of our old flat which was inhabited by hornets. Have you ever seen a queen hornet? You don't want to

backwardpossom · 03/05/2016 21:03

Fuck that. Move house. Now.

pratiaalba · 03/05/2016 21:03

Aw- they look like little downlighters!

I was hoping some kind oddjobman had been in...

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 03/05/2016 21:05

We had a queen wasp flying around the playroom yesterday - massive - scared the bejesus out of us. We do get them occasionally in April - I think they hatch in the chimney and come down through the open fireplaces.

I generally respect all living creatures, but I'm afraid DH killed it. We didn't want it setting up home anywhere near.

Meggymoodle · 03/05/2016 21:08

It's the eyes (as a PP pointed out) that are freaking me out - never mind the wasp nests (which are quite cute).

MakingJudySmile · 03/05/2016 21:10

As said up thread Potter Wasp nests.

Only fear them if you're a caterpillar.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/05/2016 21:16

We had an early wasp nest in our shed. I very bravely knocked it down, then was chased around the garden by a very angry queen. Even when I ran inside and slammed the door she bashed against the door.

wasps love stinging me and I swell up to comic proportions :(

averylongtimeago · 03/05/2016 21:18

I see your wasps and raise you hornets.
Just like wasps only MUCH bigger, the nest was the size of a rugby ball and had hundreds of them.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/05/2016 21:18

potter wasps use mud dont they? those arent made of mud but paper.

MakingJudySmile · 03/05/2016 21:29

Hmmm yes they do. Though it's not usually to have waspy wasps build many nests isn't it? Thought it was just one.
