To mourn the demise of the colourful bathroom.

When I was little, I always wanted to buy colourful loo paper to clash with go in the bathroom (beigey-green coloured suite, possibly avocado, my memory is a bit hazy). My mum refused, as it was "common" to have coloured paper, and would only ever buy white.
My mum did say that when I was grown up and had my own bathroom, I could choose whatever coloured paper I wanted.

Well here I am, all grown up with my own house, 2 DC of my own, and I can't indulge my inner child DC by buying green paper one week, pink the next, blue the next etc. We can only choose white or tasteful cream, or buff paper enriched with cocoa and shea butter, and where's the fun in that?

AIBU to secretly crave a return to the days of the coloured bathroom suite and matching loo paper?

YABU TennesseeDays, although thank you, I've just had a lovely time googling coloured suites and reminiscing

Avocado - DSis's first house when she got married
Blue - ExBF's mother's house
Peach - Second flat we rented in London
Yellow - PIL's old bathroom

Burgundy suites remind me of a time when people had carpet in their bathrooms, gross (a forensic scientist's wet dream Grin)

I used to sell bathroom suites when I was at college, and every bath/loo/sink had about five colour options, as well as about four shades of white (like that white paint you used to get "with a hint of Apple" which was basically light green.
Now, everything is just white. Tch.
Having said that, when we bought our last house, the bathroom "suite" was blue. But I say "suite" because each piece was from a different range and a completely different shade of blue from the rest. Even the loo pan was a different shade to the cistern where they had obviously replaced it and not matched it up.
That's probably not a problem with white.....

PamelaPatriciaYouCanCallMePam · 30/04/2016 20:12

We have just bought a new house and I so wish I could upload a picture of one of the bathrooms but I can't as it would be very outing (and we have bought in a little village). The suite, the walls, the tiles, the radiator, the ceiling....all maroon. MAROON?! He radiator has actually been painted to blend in, as have the shelves. It's truly a sight to behold.

The decorators are in on Monday and that is not a euphemism to get me out of sex.

TimeToMuskUp · 30/04/2016 20:13

M&S sell loo paper with little silver stars on. DH goes mad when I buy it, declaring what a waste of money it is. I love it because it's my little act of 1980's rebellion.

QueenLaBeefah · 30/04/2016 20:16

We had a turquoise bathroom growing up. It was beautiful.

Never keen on avocado ones though.

kinkytoes · 30/04/2016 20:17

We just moved into a 70s house with a lovely yellow bathroom suite.

Hoping to leave it in situ and update around it. It's really solid and in good condition considering its age.

spanky2 · 30/04/2016 20:22

I grew up in a council house with a white bathroom suite. My mum thought that it was really common and was so happy to move house into a light green bathroom suite. Then avocado, then cream. I remember orange toilet roll, green toilet roll, peach toilet roll.

spanky2 · 30/04/2016 20:25

Oh I've had: White, peach, white, avocado, pink, white and white again. I'd love a coloured suite. Art Deco preferably.

A turquoise 70s suite is my dream! The baths and sinks seem so much larger than the standard ones you get today too.

TennesseeDays · 30/04/2016 20:31

Tethersend my PIL had tiles that looked suspiciously like those ones above, but in their kitchen rather than bathroom.

DH reckons we won't go back to coloured suites but instead will move to black and silver-metallic baths. He says you can get silver and black "white goods" now, so baths will soon go the same way. Hope not (though like the idea of the loo paper with silver stars, will have to try and get some of that). Have never seen colourful loo roll at Christmas, will def have to look out for that next year.

We have a 1930's black toilet and sink and a green bath with a black marble surround... also, 1930's green and black tiling to complement. I love the bath, it is deep, and, once the enamel has heated stays hot for ages.

Sadly, the old tiling has broken in so many places that it's unsalvageable, and ripping out the bath will probably kill it ... The toilet and sink are fab - we are going to keep them but move them to a downstairs loo with a 1930's theme.

The photo attached is very similar - same sink, but black.

We bought our house in the early 1990's and we actually chose a green suite for the family bathroom and a peach suite for the en-suite. The peach suite went a few years ago but the green suite remains as it is still in good condition and I refuse to have the bathroom refurbished completely until DS (who is the only person to use it now) has left home for good. It doesn't look too bad actually as the walls are magnolia and we have put a modern glass shower screen across the bath.
My parents house which was built in 1960's still had the original white suite in until recently.
I have a friend whose house still has a burgundy bathroom suite.

OhSoggyBiscuit · 30/04/2016 20:35

Our bathroom is white (loo and sink) and 90s computer beige (bath). Boring but practical. I bet the 70s coloured bogs had a better flush then ours too.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 30/04/2016 20:37

I drove past a house a few months ago which had a pale yellow bathroom suite in a skip outside. It looked a lovely colour and I now think I would like a retro yellow suite.

As a kid we had pale green loo paper to match the avacado suite.

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 30/04/2016 20:37

We used to have a pink bathroom suite. It was lovely and I had no desire to change it. The bath was really deep and solid but didn't get cold like cast iron. I found the house on rightmove, a while back, and it's all been white and beiged beyond recognition, now.

Sadly, the loo pan broke.

Our current suite is "oatmeal". I would like it changed, but fat chance of managing it, with the kids. Of course, cream loo seats have mostly gone out of fashion, so we have to make do with "soft white". A wooden one is no good because one of the boys has a tendency to slam and the last thing i need is for our only loo to go the way of the pink one I had years ago.

blueteapot · 30/04/2016 20:40

My granny (93) has a full on pink bathroom suite, complete with shell shaped sink, and embellished with white floral motifs! Never seen a suite like it elsewhere. There are even matching ceramic loo roll holders / towel rings.

Genuinely if I moved into her house I would be delighted and keep it lol! (possibly nostalgia lol!)

The barbie doll knitted dress toilet roll holders that shes had since we were kids make it though :D

loubielou2 · 30/04/2016 20:41

I am SO glad coloured suites might be back because we still have our yellow suite. Been here in this house 13 years and it's £6K to replace so have kept. It's also in excellent condition. Am I the only one to have a coloured suite still?

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 30/04/2016 20:42

Yanbu. I love a coloroured bathroom. Having rented as succesion of shit tips that hadn't been updated since the 70s. The colour of the bathroom suite was always something of a highlight. Once house had a beautiful turquoise suite and another an incredible harvest gold one and best of all a pink suite that looks like Barbara Cartland had installed it. I crave one in our flat, much better than the boring white ones that need constant cleaning.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 30/04/2016 20:44

A friend bought a house to renovate which had a brown suite (called "mink" I believe) Happily she got rid of the hideous thing pretty fast, but did mention that it hid the skiddies a damn sight better than a white suite

I have some dead common friends, me Blush Grin

queenofthemountains · 30/04/2016 20:45

We ripped out a boring white bathroom and put in a pink sink and loo, our house is very retro though. I love the pink, it was always my dream to have a pink loo and now I have.

LittleHouseOnTheShelf · 30/04/2016 20:52

We just had our orange suite ripped out, maybe I should have sold it on ebay.

I long for a lovely soft yellow bathroom. Possibly with a contrasting mint basin or loo.

There is no way I'd ever get this past DH: he's very sedate when it comes to bathroom deco Hmm

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 30/04/2016 20:57

Oh yes, everytime I watch "Carry On At Your Convenience", I always hanker after the pastel coloured bathroom suites... pale powder blue was my favourite but also loved the primrose yellow and shell pink - not the green though, far too lurid.

I don't are about coloured toilet paper though.
