To demand people keep their dogs away from me on the seafront

I'm sick of random dogs coming up to sniff me and DS or getting under my feet. All dogs make me nervous even small ones. And I hate it when they cock their leg on my pram wheels Angry

So now when a dog comes up to me or just before it reaches me I shout to the owner (politely but firmly) 'please keep your dog away from me/my pram'
Most oblige but a number are rude! Yesterday a woman retorted crossly 'but it's the sea-front'. I replied 'they should be on leads' and got a mouthful of abuse. There is a bloody great sign saying 'dogs should be on leads on the promenade'!! I wouldn't care if people kept them to heel but I don't want them touching me, my pram or tripping me up Angry

AIBU??

Some beaches dogs most certainly are. Restricted hours are usually spring/summer 10am -6pm or so. Although the number of dog owners who take no notice of these signs could lead one to conclude that dogs can go on at any time.

No. I wouldn't choose to walk on a beach where dogs are ( but often have no choice see above) but still come across plenty of shit that their owners haven't cleared up unfortunately.

Permanent dog/no dog beaches would be safer and more hygenic.

Canyouforgiveher · 03/05/2016 15:22

I'm in the US and nearly every park and conservation area near me has dedicated areas for dogs to run off lead. We were on hols on cape cod once and there was a fenced little playground for dogs next to the kids' playground - very cute. It makes life much easier. I have a dog (best dog in the world as it happens) but I don't like dogs running off lead either as I am slightly nervous of other people's dogs.

FarrowandBallAche · 03/05/2016 15:32

i have never seen a dog on a beach that it should not have been on.

Lauren1983 · 03/05/2016 16:05

As someone with a phobia of certain dog situations it can cause me a great deal of stress to see one off a lead. I don't hate dogs at all but I do have a fear of dogs that are off lead and that I do not know.

If your dog does not follow all your instructions it should not be off a lead. I often see dog owners who allow their dogs to go so far ahead/behind that they would never be able to stop their dog if it attacked someone.

A few months ago me, my DP and a 3 year old DD were walking past a house where the front door had been opened to allow some visitors in. Their dog got out and charged at us. We were on the opposite side of the road and about 25 feet down the road but the dog made a beeline for us. I asked them to call their dog away saying that I was didn't like dogs and was scared. The dog started to turn back home and I called out an apology for being upset. The dog then turned back to us and continued to come at us. It didn't jump but was growling and acting aggressively. The owners just stood in their garden and called the dog's name. It paid no attention but they still didn't bother to actually go and get it in. After a couple of minutes the dog went close enough to their garden for them to grab it. They didn't apologise once. We called the local dog warden who visited them. They told us the woman who loved there was pregnant. I dread to think about that dog with a baby.

I have always been scared of dogs but this has just heightened it. Everytime I see a large dog off a lead I think the same will happen. You might love your dog and know it's temperament but I don't. I keep away from 2 large local parks that people walk dogs in because I know I can't expect every dog in a park to be on a lead but when I'm in a residential area I expect them to be.

I bloody have! Repeatedly! But not on this country.

IrianofWay · 03/05/2016 16:27

If there was a sign then dog should have been on the lead. Simple.

However I will freely acknowledge that I often exercise my dog off lead where there are no 'dogs on leads' signs and I judge it's safe and suitable to do do.

bigbuttons · 03/05/2016 16:28

WaitrosePigeon there is dog shit everywhere. This is the main reason I dislike dogs so much.

FarrowandBallAche · 03/05/2016 16:55

But it's not the dogs fault there is shit everywhere. It's their lazy owners.

SukeyTakeItOffAgain · 03/05/2016 17:16

I guess some of you don't find the Fenton youtube video funny then? Wink

Rosebud05 · 03/05/2016 17:59

It's lazy and irresponsible owners that you should be directing your ire at then farrow.

They're the ones that cause annoyance, harm and blindness, not those of us who simply ask that owners keep their dogs under control in public places.

FarrowandBallAche · 03/05/2016 18:12

Chill out Rosebud it's not good to be this angry.

WaitrosePigeon · 03/05/2016 18:13

I honestly never see it and I'm not being a dick!

NeedACleverNN · 03/05/2016 18:18

No I will admit I do see dog crap everywhere....

It's a bugger trying to avoid it with the buggy and I actually stood in some the other day trying to get Dd to walk round it

But like pp posted, it's not the dogs fault it's the owners

bigbuttons · 03/05/2016 18:22

I live a a terribly middle class village at the foot if the South Downs. It is full of very nice white middle class people with thousands of dogs. There is dog shit over the grass verges,; on the pavements; in the church yard; on the village green and a tonne of it on the main path way to the top of the downs.
Absolutely fucking disgusting.

FarrowandBallAche · 03/05/2016 18:36

Sounds similar to where I live Big.

It's pretty awful in places. I take loads of pop bags out with me and will give them to people who look the other way and pretend their dog didn't shit. I will also pick up dog poo that I see that's in really awful places like near schools etc that doesn't belong to one of mine.

farrow What gives you the idea that I'm angry? Wanting dog owners to keep their dogs under control and clear up their shit?

It was you that had a post or two deleted for making personal attacks up thread, so a bit of projection, possibly?

Rosebud05 · 03/05/2016 19:27

bigbuttons I hear you. It's not the staffy owners that I've ever had a problem with tbh, it's the 'oh, he's part of the family... I can't see when he poos all the time' brigade that I have found most disconcerting.

FarrowandBallAche · 03/05/2016 19:58

I wonder who reported that then Rose?

Your demeanour is very angry I have to say. I mean how many times in the last year have you been jumped up at by a dog?

Honestly?

Rosebud05 · 03/05/2016 20:04

I reported your post farrow. MNHQ decided to delete because personal attacks aren't allowed.

How interesting that you find my demeanour 'very angry' as that doesn't resonate my own experience of my demeanour.

FarrowandBallAche · 03/05/2016 20:09

If you felt the need to report my post to HQ fine.

There have been a lot of not so nice comments on this thread but as we are adults I haven't reported them. I can take what people say to me regarding this subject.

Rosebud05 · 03/05/2016 20:18

I wasn't me that you made a personal attack on, actually, but as MNHQ request personal attacks/troll hunting are reported I thought it best.

It was MNHQ that decided to delete it, of course.

Anyway, I'm off now. OP, of course YANBU to want owners to keep their dogs under control but, if you've never been on a dog thread on MN, this one has probably given you insight into why this seemingly blindingly reasonable request doesn't get met more often!

FarrowandBallAche · 03/05/2016 20:21

Cheerio.

TigerPath · 03/05/2016 20:31

Are most beaches on the South Coast dog-free during the summer months? If so which ones? I haven't seen any signs other than the one requesting they are leashed on the promenade.
At the moment they all seem overrun with dogs. I can't relax when one could jump on me any second. Even the jingling noise of their collars puts me on edge.

I don't think it would make it anymore hygienic.
Unless ofcourse it will magically stop the dirty nappies, wipes and fag ends Confused
That's certainly all i came across last time i was at the beach!
