To demand people keep their dogs away from me on the seafront

TigerPath · 29/04/2016 07:16

I'm sick of random dogs coming up to sniff me and DS or getting under my feet. All dogs make me nervous even small ones. And I hate it when they cock their leg on my pram wheels Angry

So now when a dog comes up to me or just before it reaches me I shout to the owner (politely but firmly) 'please keep your dog away from me/my pram'
Most oblige but a number are rude! Yesterday a woman retorted crossly 'but it's the sea-front'. I replied 'they should be on leads' and got a mouthful of abuse. There is a bloody great sign saying 'dogs should be on leads on the promenade'!! I wouldn't care if people kept them to heel but I don't want them touching me, my pram or tripping me up Angry

shinning can you please stop saying people are intimidated by large dogs?
Some might be, You might be, but i'm not.
The fact you say farrow is arrogant when you came out with that post Grin
You know not everybody has a big dog as a status symbolyou know?
If i have a dog next it will be a staffy.
Purely because there are liads of them in the rescue by me, and can be the most docile and placid dogs.

kali110 · 01/05/2016 19:19

And playful. May have to reset my phone...

FarrowandBallAche · 01/05/2016 19:22

My dogs aren't a status symbol Confused they aren't a breed that is perceived to be menacing. They are actually a very docile, gentle breed.

zeezeek · 01/05/2016 19:57

Bloody hell. Is this thread still going?

Shining12 · 01/05/2016 20:27

Most rational people find large powerful dogs intimidating, a large powerful dog is ALWAYS a potential threat, any dog could behave aggressively and a large dog clearly has the potential to do more damage than a small one.

totalrecall1 · 01/05/2016 20:34

Shining. I have what you would describe as a large powerful dog. We have him because I read up on the breed in a lot of detail, and understood him to be a fantastic family pet, which is exactly what he is. That does not mean though that people who don't really understand the breed don't make assumptions about him, which is a real shame. .We don't have him to intimidate people and I really strongly object to that comment. That just shows your ignorance frankly. I have been petrified of dogs large and small my whole life. This big powerful - friendly, loving, obedient dog has totally cured me of that. I have the upmost respect though for people who don't like dogs and will keep him away, I understand what that is like. What I find hard to stomach is people like you who make generalisations about why people like me have a particular breed of dog, and indeed make presumptions about the behavioural traits of my dog just because he is big.

kali110 · 01/05/2016 20:39

shinning really? So becauae i don't find big dogs terrifying i'm not rational? Righto. Yep, you're not a gf at all....

Shining12 · 01/05/2016 20:39

what sort of dog do you have Totalrecall?

kali110 · 01/05/2016 20:39

farrow don't bother, it's what shinning wants.

totalrecall1 · 01/05/2016 20:42

Doberman

FarrowandBallAche · 01/05/2016 20:45

Dobermans are beautiful. I meet one on my walk often with his dog walker. He's very friendly, of course.

FarrowandBallAche · 01/05/2016 20:47

Total please don't rise to shining and her ignorance.

For some reason she's after a row.

NeedACleverNN · 01/05/2016 20:48

My aunt had a Doberman

Not my sort of dog but she was as soft as muck.

She has an Akita now

totalrecall1 · 01/05/2016 20:50

Thank you Farrow. He is very beautiful. In fact for the most part, we have had really positive responses to him, people have actually stopped us in the street to see him (a car even pulled over once!). People always comment on how well behaved he is particularly with kids. I think because he is big and powerful we have taken extra care in training him. Little dogs can get away with jumping up etc but obviously because he is big we have to make sure he doesn't do that. It irrates me though when you get the odd person making assumptions about him because of the misrepresentation of the breed. If you read up on them and buy from a reputable breeder and socialise them properly they are fabulous family pets. He didn't join our family to intimidate people,

FarrowandBallAche · 01/05/2016 20:57

He sounds marvellous and like you're doing an amazing job with him. He will reward you for life with his loyalty and friendship.

There aren't that many Dobermans about these days so it's always lovely to see one.

Shining12 · 01/05/2016 21:09

NeedACleverNN · 01/05/2016 21:13

Yet funnily enough large dogs are more placid than a small dog

Your are more likely to be bitten by a Yorkshire terrier than you are a Great Dane...but it's the Dane you would have a problem with

kali110 · 01/05/2016 21:28

need yep agree with you! I've been bitten twice ( almost 3 times) and all by tiny dogs!
Grew up with my aunts huge dog too and he was the dopest little thing. Grin never had any worries. I loved that dog.

totalrecall1 · 01/05/2016 21:29

Yes you are right Shining, but so is CleverNN. If you look at which dogs bite the most it is little ones. I don't have an issue with your concern that any dog may bite, I don't think mine would (I think they are like humans in a way that some are born to be agressive and some are not) but I do understand why you might think that. My issue is with your statement that these sorts of dogs are aquired to be threatening and to scare people. It is always sensible to be wary of all dogs you don't know, but thats not just big dogs. You shouldn't be scared of a dog because it is a particular breed.

NeedACleverNN · 01/05/2016 21:31

I think the issue is with big dogs is that if they were to bite, they would do a lot more damage than a little dog.

This I understand

But you can't look at all big dogs and think it might bite me because most dogs won't.

totalrecall1 · 01/05/2016 21:33

And Clever NN - I think that is because the owners of large dogs are more conscious of the size of their dog and therefore make sure they are trained to a better degree than a smaller one. All though some smaller breeds do seem to have a tendency to nip.

Shining12 · 01/05/2016 21:42

If you look at which dogs bite the most it is little ones do you have data to support this claim, and do you have data which shows the extent of injuries caused by various different breeds, which ones have attacked and killed people?

You shouldn't be scared of a dog because it is a particular breed my propensity to be wary of dog increases in direct proportion to the size weight and general physical prowess of the dog.
If there were a full sized japanese Akita and a chihuahua sized version I'd give the former a wide berth and the latter I would not worry much about except to avoid if it showed overt signs of aggression.

That to me seems like a very rational risk assesment

Shining12 · 01/05/2016 21:53

But you can't look at all big dogs and think it might bite me because most dogs won't
a big dog could physically overpower me and kill me if it wanted to, a small dog without powerful jaw muscles, even if it wanted to kill me, couldnt.

I am nervous of animals roaming freely in public places which could overpower me and kill me, lets face it these dogs have been bred for hunting/fighting/protection.

your belief that your dog wont bite is based on your own pet theories about human psychology ....and thats supposed to be reassuring??
I am not remotely reassured by your 'logic'
