To think the Daily Mail are taking the piss?

As you may infer from my NN I am not a fan. However I saw this on today's Mail online:

DM Link

For those who don't want to click it, the DM have mined the recent thread from a poster who lost her DS at a young age, and was asking if she WBU to still buy clothes for him and join clubs. I remember the thread as it was really moving and so clear that the poster was struggling with her grief.

The Mail has lifted the story - and the child's name - lock, stock and barrel. I'd be interested in MNHQ's view on this. I realise that posts are in the public domain but this feels so horribly invasive.

fucking hell

TattyCat · 26/04/2016 16:55

Hmm, I've also just had a look at her Twitter account. Not very bright, this 'journalist'... it's full of comments I would expect from a 15 year old and peppered with bad language. Professional journalist? I don't think so. I suspect nepotism at the DM for this one to have a 'job' with them.

notquitehuman · 26/04/2016 16:57

Shit. I really hope the OP of that thread is OK. She was obviously in a very fragile state as it was. If Mumsnet have given DM permission to publish those screenshots I'll be horrified.

RaeSkywalker · 26/04/2016 17:00

Tatty I've just looked too- she seems to spend a lot of time on Twitter asking for permission to use photos in her articles. I'm now worried that MN gave her permission to use the screen shots.

Fairylea · 26/04/2016 17:01

Absolutely disgusting behaviour from the Daily Fail. Some threads should remain here. Deeply personal threads do not deserve to be treated as news fodder - the "journalists" at the Daily Fail should respect that. They could ruin people's lives if they keep posting deeply personal things people post here and this site acts as an outlet and place of support for many people. Yes people should be aware that it is a public forum but to be plastered all over the Daily Fail website is wrong.

DiscoGlitter · 26/04/2016 17:01

I'm no expert, but I do wonder if the poor OP can sue for slander, or something...
Sorry, but how has the op been slandered? Confused They've only posted what the op put on here in the first place, they haven't tarnished her character or anything.
There's no way of saying this without sounding harsh, as it is really low to just take off a grief story - but it's NOT private in here.
This is why I rarely post about anything more controversial than what I'm having for my tea, as this is an internationally public forum with millions of readers, not an intimate private part of the web.
Never post anything you wouldn't mind people in RL seeing. Depressing, but true.

DailyFailAreABunchOfCunts · 26/04/2016 17:03

I have to go out but would appreciate it if anyone could continue to report in order to get some clarity from MNHQ on this - if only to check that the OP of the thread is aware of what has happened.

I thought the one the other day that the daily hate-mail lifted from here about the woman who didnt like her friends kid was bad enough, but this one really takes the biscuit

upthegardenpath · 26/04/2016 17:04

How and where do I report DailyFail?

FelicityR313 · 26/04/2016 17:05

It will definitely affect my usage of the site now. And the sad thing is that the times when you most need help are times that are so personal and private and distressing.

Furious with the DM.

LittleLionMansMummy · 26/04/2016 17:05

I'm wondering if the DM could be reported to the Information Commissioner's Office for breaches under the Data Protection Act? They've used the child's name, together with the picture. I know this was put out there by the op, but its intended use at the point of original publication was not for replica publication by a different organisation. The DM does not own the data and is therefore not at liberty to share it, surely?

FelicityR313 · 26/04/2016 17:06

I'm keeping an eye on the three threads on this Daily so I will pm if they deign to comment.

CoolforKittyCats · 26/04/2016 17:07

It will definitely affect my usage of the site now.

The thing is it is an open public forum and always has been.

People should always be aware about what they share. Once you hit that post button it in the public domain.

RB68 · 26/04/2016 17:07

Actually if they have lifted chapter and verse there is a copyright issue - complex but they are lifting material word for word from MN to publish MN own copyright on the material on their site albeit posted by another person

TattyCat · 26/04/2016 17:12

Actually, I think the lack of comment from MNHQ is significant. So, it's ok blaming this 'journalist' and the DM but I also think we need to be looking to MNHQ to clarify that they haven't given permission for this either.

If they have then quite honestly I would be surprised at anyone continuing to use this MN, for anything.

YetAnotherHelenMumsnet · 26/04/2016 17:13

Thanks for drawing this one to our attention; we do understand why so many of you are upset about it. We just wanted to make it clear that we didn't know anything about this piece until after it had already been published.

BertieBotts · 26/04/2016 17:13

I would also be interested to hear MNHQ's response to this.

snorepatrol · 26/04/2016 17:13

The original thread has just been pulled.
I was stunned when I saw the story in the DM today utterly disgusting did mumsnet have anything to do with it then?

originalmavis · 26/04/2016 17:14

That is a tough one - public forum and all that. Who owns the posts? It is very lazy and incredibly low interest story. It really isn't in the public intetest, so I'd say a complaint is entirely justifiable. Her editor wants a boot up the backside for allowing that to slip through, although I suspect these days they just input their own drivel copy.

Is there really nothing else happening in the world or is the 'journalist' somebody's cousin or girlfriend?

Goingtobeawesome · 26/04/2016 17:15

I hate some people in this world

Utterly unforgivable

twirlypoo · 26/04/2016 17:16

This is honestly disgusting. Where is the human decency? Ffs! MNHQ what's your opinion on it given you have now been made aware of it?

BertieBotts · 26/04/2016 17:17

Xposted - thank you for response. Appreciate that it will take time to coordinate an official longer statement. :)
