Unmumsy Mum Confusion

I'm just reading this and it says she found out she was pregnant but didn't know as she had irregular periods. Fair enough.

She then goes on to say that 'according to the Babycenter app I was already 7 weeks pregnant'

Eh? Is it psychic? How is this possible that an app know how far along she is?

Purely for the deletion message. First time ever I couldn't be arsed to even pretend to post a relevant comment when I just wanted to read the deletion comment.

Sorry had to nick that idea

MistressMerryWeather · 25/04/2016 17:00

May I borrow your spoons, Worra?

Shallowstreams · 25/04/2016 17:02

Why will it be deleted?

ouryve · 25/04/2016 17:04

Thank you for warning me not to buy this book, OP.

Goingtobeawesome · 25/04/2016 17:06

If when it turns out to be a terrible attempt at a plug.

MistressMerryWeather · 25/04/2016 17:06

Because it does seem a little blog promoty which isn't allowed.

But tbh, I don't think you have broken any guidelines.

Catfartstink · 25/04/2016 17:09

I have irregular periods and put my last date in, it told me I was 6 weeks pregnant. I did it based on the fact I had other symptoms and probably should have started by now.
I was on the pill and had taken the morning after pill so I shouldn't have been.

As a irregular period person Ive got through a lot of pregnancy tests in my time!!! Although this time the morning sickness was the added clue

I'm not sure why it needs questioning?

WorraLiberty · 25/04/2016 17:14

May I borrow your spoons, Worra?

Yes. Hold still and stop struggling.

This is for your own good Grin

MistressMerryWeather · 25/04/2016 17:18

You're too kind. :o

Oysterbabe · 25/04/2016 17:21

Emily Writes is actually a really good mum blogger. Maybe it's just because I'm going through a phase of little sleep though and her kids haven't slept in 2 years.

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 25/04/2016 17:22

I'll line up for the spoons as well if that's alright. I've really had my fill of 'I'm not one of you Alpha mum-types, I'm sooo imperfect and I lose my shit hilariously but I love my kids' type blogs.

The ones 'telling it as it really is.' Which is a lot like about 10,000 other blogs with the same narrative.

I want something fresh in my blog reading.

Pogmella · 25/04/2016 17:41

I want to write a fake one that starts out all generic 'i'm such a clutz!' And over several weeks gets darker until the kids go into care and she admits she is actually a high functioning alcoholic. See how long it would be before people stopped commenting 'so true!'

Shallowstreams · 25/04/2016 17:42

I didn't even mention the blog in the first post though, someone asked who she was so I said.

I'm not sure why I'd be promoting it? I only downloaded it to read whilst feeding my baby and it's not actually very good. Hence my original post.

In real life are some of you those type of people who see some kind of conspiracy in everything? As I said that must be exhausting....

OP posts:
notamummy10 · 25/04/2016 17:49

I really like her blog and book! I don't fit in her demographic due to my lack of children but who cares... I also like Hurrah for Gin, who is coincidentally is bringing out a book too.

Anyone can publish a book btw, but I guess your success will depend whether you are known or not. I mean look at all the different YouTubers/Bloggers that have brought out books.

FirstWeTakeManhattan · 25/04/2016 17:51

The Unmumsy Mum! It's a blogger who's written a book that's now the number 1 bestseller

Can you see how some people find might this slightly plug-ish, though OP?

Doesn't make everyone raving conspiracy theorists by the way. It just indicates that they're capable of reading stuff and drawing a conclusion.

Shallowstreams · 25/04/2016 18:22

No, I was just surprised people wouldn't have heard of the book as it is a bestseller hence I pointed it out. I'd do the same if someone hadn't heard of E L James - it doesn't mean I am promoting it or think it's any good even.

There it is again. That thing that might make people think you'd quite like people to buy it. A quick google didn't tell me where it was a 'No 1 bestseller', but honestly OP, don't bother enlightening me.

The blurb though, 'This is not a parenting manual. This is real Life. The Unmumsy Mum writes candidly about motherhood like it really is: the messy, maddening, hilarious reality, how there is no 'one size fits all' approach and how it is sometimes absolutely fine to not know what you are doing.'

Sounds like bloody awful, done to death drivel. Women deserve better.

Shallowstreams · 26/04/2016 09:34

firstwetakemanhattan you're being patently ridiculous but I think you might know that...

I could tell you The Conservatives were voted in to government and hence the number 1 party in the country. Doesn't mean I think they're any good. I could express surprise that you hadn't heard of Rihanna and say 'but she's a number 1 selling artist'. Doesn't mean I don't think she's shit. I can state a fact like its a bestselling book without meaning I think it's any good.

In fact I stated above that I don't think its very good which is hardly a hard sell technique.

What defines a "bestseller" these days? Where are you getting that from?

witsender · 26/04/2016 09:45

I guess just by its rankings?

I have seen her posts in Facebook. Vaguely amusing but not original...can't imagine making it through a book of it. Didn't know it was so popular tbh.

Shallowstreams · 26/04/2016 13:04

Oh God this was NOT the point of this post! I had to go and look it up. It was The Sunday Times bestseller list. Happy?!

OP posts:
TiggerPiggerPoohBumWee · 26/04/2016 13:09

No, the point of the post was your failure to understand how an app might work. I wouldn't be getting shirty if I were you!

ouryve · 26/04/2016 13:43

I don't read mummy blogs
I definitely don't read the Sunday Times.
I don't base my book purchases on what other people are buying.

I'm sure I'm not unique in that respect. It's perfectly conceivable that many, many people have not even heard of the book, never mind being unaware of its elevated status as a "bestseller".

Shallowstreams · 26/04/2016 16:55

Ouryve apologies I wasn't referring to you. You are obviously a very independent person - it must have offended you for someone to suggest people may have heard of a book that's popular and in the field of the forum. I hope you recover.

Tigger then perhaps best we stick to that.

OP posts:
Topseyt · 26/04/2016 17:05

I had never heard of the book, and the title would put me right off, number 1 bestseller or not.

Sounds like something not to go looking for.

Your OP was very odd in that it gave no context to your question at all, hence people asked you about it. That was when it seemed to turn into a plug for the book and still probably is IMHO.
