or is selling a t-shirt with Myra Hindley's face on it completely out of order?

Society 6 are selling this. I know it's art. I get it. But it's also total shit, and completely out of order. I've even tweeted it (first tweet in about a year). So cross.

Look, they may not even have sold one of those shirts. That's not a picture of an actual made-up vest, it's just automatically mocked up the image onto their standard tank top template picture.

Not worth wasting your emotion on in my view.

FinnigansCake · 25/04/2016 16:30

Sick, vile, obscene and very very distressing for the families of the victims.

splendide · 25/04/2016 16:33

A member of the victim's family is much more likely to see it if people tweet outraged tweets and make threads on popular forums highlighting the product.

YelloRoses · 25/04/2016 16:34

Wrong but society finds murders and nasty people cool so are you surprised? Im not

HeresJohnny · 25/04/2016 16:35

I am, unfortunately, not surprised by this. I used to work in marketing for 'edgy' brands and pulling stunts like this was often floated in team meetings. Most of us thought it very disingenuous and at times down right immoral - but what mattered most was client trajectory, consumer growth and awareness.

We mostly used stories of death row inmates but I don't think anyone would have batted an eyelid over Myra Hindley's image either. The thing is, our goal was to get people talking about it and thus more people aware of the 'brand' - as you've just done with Society6. That would count as a win in our book.

As long as marketing teams/designers/outlets stay on the right side of the law then everything else is a moot point.

Not nice or moral but that's the way it is. And we enjoyed being on the fringe of these sorts of marketing campaigns - brands like Marks&Spencer couldn't do this but lesser known, small-time brands could and would.

zofranks · 25/04/2016 16:35

OMG that's wrong, so totally wrong.

missbishi · 25/04/2016 16:41

splendide It's just one of those Cafe Press-style sites isn't it? These things are just printed to order, nobody had commissioned an entire batch of them.

Best ignored, not shared. Don't give them the free publicity.

MorrisZapp · 25/04/2016 16:42

This is a non issue, along with Amazon selling rape tshirts. The items don't actually exist, but there are websites which allow customisable products to be ordered by consumers.

There are no Myra Hindley throw pillows. But if you really want one, you could have one made. Just as I could get my local t-shirt shop to write something hateful on a t-shirt for me. The shop isn't hateful, it would be me.

This looks like yet another social media outrage based upon very little.

splendide · 25/04/2016 16:48

That's right Missbishi.

PointlessFriend · 25/04/2016 17:48

I'm not sure the Amazon rape tshirts actually exist - if it's the Keep Calm Tee's- they just made a mistake using a dictionaries worth of computer generated mock up tee shirts including every single verb. Ifyswim

Obviously they should have thought about it dirt and checked the combinations but it's not as thought someone thought about and printed a Teeshirt.

Yoksha · 25/04/2016 20:07

Ok, since I sent my email protesting about the t shirts I've been inundated with personalised ads everywhere I go. Be careful if you send any communication! I've also received an answer from them informing me they're going to investigate my concern. Just thought I'd let you all know.

ZsaZsa1954 · 25/04/2016 20:11

Yep, I had one of those as well, I suspect they've had a lot of emails telling them this is not a good idea. Don't get ads thanks to Adblock.

BillSykesDog · 25/04/2016 20:16

I imagine the sort of person who would wear that would get a massive kick out of the fact it had enraged MN. I prefer to think of them as tiresome unoriginal cunts rather than agent provacateurs.

EagleRay · 25/04/2016 20:21

Itv news are reporting it now (on Twitter)

Woe betide you should bring actual information and a sense of proportion to the discussion Morris, it is getting in the way of the faux outrage.

I'm going to be charitable here and assume you are too young to know who this woman is and what she was involved in. Let's just say that she and Ian Brady and their deeds are one of the scars on the British psyche - one that probably need everyone who remembers it to be long dead before the horror fades.

LikeDylanInTheMovies · 25/04/2016 20:47

I know exactly who they are so don't need patronising thanks. If I understand correctly society6 sells a wide range reproduction art works by recognised artists including Mr Esch. People can order any of them as posters or have them screen printed onto a t shirt or a phone case. It would take a conscious effort for a person to select and create a Myra Hindley cushion cover. It doesn't appear to be a case of someone deliberate attempt to court controversy.

And if people really are concerned about the reactions of the victims family, stop fanning the flames of outrage. Ignore it and it goes away quicker.

ZsaZsa1954 · 25/04/2016 20:55

I wasn't being patronising, I was being charitable. As for the reactions of the victims families, I don't think it's possible to fan the flames of outrage. After 50 years they still burn very brightly in some quarters and with good reason.

How sweetly naive some people can be.
