To not give two hoots about the demise of BHS?

(Disclaimer: obviously very sad for anyone employed there who is now facing losing their jobs).

Couldn't really care less if BHS ceases to exist. They're not a patch on Debenhams or John Lewis, and are beaten by places like M&S in the market for knickers and school uniform. Haven't bought anything in there for about three years - and even then it was in a Wallis concession rather than in BHS itself.

All this harping on about 88 years of tradition on the UK high street is ridiculous - it's a company which has failed to move with the times, has no defined core shopper and which sells tat.

My first Saturday job was in BHS....in the Hats department... Was such fun.. Oops that ages me somewhat....(it was inthe 1970s ... )

TitaniumSpider · 25/04/2016 19:39

I was reading a house magazine yesterday, the featured house had a chest of drawers from BHS which was something silly like £500. If I had that kind of money to spend on a chest of drawers it would never occur to me to go to BHS. I think that's a lot of their problem.
Sorry to all those who are losing their jobs.

Floisme · 25/04/2016 19:39

Sorry for yet another link but I've spent the afternoon following this and my jaw is on the floor. Particularly this bit:

For many years, BHS formed part of a holding company called Taveta Investments Limited. In 2005, Taveta Investments paid a dividend of £1.3bn, although the group’s annual profit was only £253m.

I think I should back to style and beauty now.

Laska5772 · 25/04/2016 19:40

Oooh ..and our current local BHS has (had) the only escalator in town! ( I live in a small place!)

Floisme · 25/04/2016 19:42

It was my first Saturday job too, Laska5772 I got paid 90P per day Grin

They were way more fashionable than M&S.

gingerboy1912 · 25/04/2016 19:46

I feel for the staff who might loose their jobs but the stuff they sell and the lay out of our local branch is like stepping back in time. Bloody dreadful.

HelenaDove · 25/04/2016 20:05

John Lewis are hiring An old schoolfriend of mine is on a 3 week course with them in view to getting a job.

vienna1981 · 25/04/2016 20:14

Reading a lot of these posts it seems BHS had some considerable strengths, i.e. cafes, homewares, school uniforms and lighting. So it would be reasonable to assume that whatever pulled them under in spite of its strengths was considerable.

FWIW I always preferred BHS over Littlewoods, which is probably saying quite a lot. Is Littlewoods still on the high street ? The Leeds branch disappeared about twenty years ago and it was good riddance to bad rubbish. That store had no redeeming features at all. It was grey, grim, drab and bleak. BHS was Fortnum and Mason by comparison.

Good luck to all affected by today's news.

LuluJakey1 · 25/04/2016 20:20

Never go in it but I am sorry for the 11,000 people who work there whose jobs look likely to disappear and the pensioners whose pension pot has been raided by Phillip Green. Disgraceful!

girlfrommars33 · 25/04/2016 20:22

YABU. I love the homeware department and the cafe and have bought clothes from there in the last year. In fact im wearing a tunic dress from there (bought for £8) as I type. I'm 33! I always felt it was an affordable department store with good quality and staff. Also loved browsing their Christmas department and have bought nice hampers in the sale. It's v sad.

girlfrommars33 · 25/04/2016 20:23

I definitely give two hoots Sad

Titsywoo · 25/04/2016 20:33

I still shop in BHS as they did the only completely plain black jogging bottoms with an elasticated waist and cuffs but no drawstring that I can find. My DS who is ASD has lots of sensory issues and refuses to wear anything else and so plain black is all I could get away with at school.

No idea what we will do from September!

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 25/04/2016 20:40

I like their plain jumpers. They are good for work. Ive recently gone down a dress size and was going to buy some more next winter.

Also the Christmas stuff they have is really good too.

Dixiechickonhols · 25/04/2016 20:52

I have a bedroom light from them, their lighting seemedto be modern.

Last time I walked through a store a few years ago in manchester it smelled as the cafe was right there seemed odd food smells and clothes.

I'm 41 and it wouldn't occur to me to go in there. I shop in Next, M and S mainly. There is one in the Trafford centre but don't go in. Do go in Debenhams there though and john lewis.

BikeRunSki · 25/04/2016 20:54

I liked BHS cafes when the DC were babies, because they would give me warm water to warm up their milk, no questions asked.

I'd like - and would shop at - a pared down BHS that was a cafe, homewares, and a small selection of clothes, including school uniform and underwear. A bit like those Asda Home and Living shops, but with a lot less clothes.

Dowser · 25/04/2016 20:56

I've stocked up on £30 knitted dresses for £10 for next winter.

We got a fab new bhs in our town, that used to be woolworths. It is a lovely store to shop in, not like some of the horrible jobbies in other towns. It has prime position in our shopping centre which will leave it looking awful. Just as it was picking up.

I hope it's one of the stores that will bought up by another discerning retailer if it really does go.

Dowser · 25/04/2016 20:58

Ours is a lot like that bike run. Upstairs a lovely glass fronted cafe overlooking the shopping centre.

It is a crying shame.

NicknameUsed · 25/04/2016 21:03

I quite like the Meadowhall one. It isn't grim at all.

Woobeedoo · 25/04/2016 21:11

My Mum is pretty miffed, M&S have apparently 'done something strange' to their bra sizes ("Who are these women with the weird boobs they're measuring to get their sizes Woo?!") so she'd started buying them in BHS. She's probably going to head off and buy all their remaining 34C's as quick as her legs can carry her.

Dowser · 25/04/2016 21:17

Yes, I got some nice swimwear last year in the sale. My cousin got some lovely sandals last year in their sale. Cardiff doesn't have a bhs.

I've had loads of pairs of boots in the sale over the last couple of years.

See, it was always in the sale. I knew if I waited just a few weeks, they'd have a sale on. No way to run a business.

aintnothinbutagstring · 25/04/2016 21:20

Will miss their lighting and some other homeware. They have a nice wedding range online too. Think they actually had some nice stuff, they just failed to advertise/showcase it properly.

slalomsuki · 25/04/2016 21:29

Cafe, Homeware and Christmas shop are the only real things worth going in for. We had a Wallis in ours which was useful but not very well stocked.

I'll miss it if it went.

YelloRoses · 25/04/2016 21:50

Their home stuff is nice, I dont like to see old stores go, i was upset when woolworths went.

alltheworld · 25/04/2016 22:02

They used to be great for lighting

polyhymnia · 25/04/2016 22:06

Haven't set foot in it for years and have no wish to. Can't really understand how they've survived this long.! But sorry for all losing their jobs.
