To not give two hoots about the demise of BHS?

(Disclaimer: obviously very sad for anyone employed there who is now facing losing their jobs).

Couldn't really care less if BHS ceases to exist. They're not a patch on Debenhams or John Lewis, and are beaten by places like M&S in the market for knickers and school uniform. Haven't bought anything in there for about three years - and even then it was in a Wallis concession rather than in BHS itself.

All this harping on about 88 years of tradition on the UK high street is ridiculous - it's a company which has failed to move with the times, has no defined core shopper and which sells tat.

OP posts:

I think the employees have been very badly served by a company that hasn't made any attempt to move with the times. I cannot remember the last time I was in a BHS. I feel desperately sorry for those who lose their jobs.

I think WHSmiths have gone the other way - panicked and tried to move with the times and branched out into all sorts of nonsene meaning they have less space to stock what you want from there - books, magazines and stationery.

Last time I was in WHsmiths I was after a techy magazine. I asked the woman behind the counter and got "dunno, don't know where the stock manager is".

So obviously I went home and bought it online. Cheaper

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 25/04/2016 16:41

I love their home stuff, great rugs, lights, blankets, etc.

JulesJules · 25/04/2016 17:00

Stkildasnun - he puts everything in his wife's name, who is resident in Monaco. So no tax paid.

whippetlove · 25/04/2016 17:12

I only go into Bhs for a cheap breakfast when in a specific town. Their clothes layout is awful.

I went into Wh smith the other day and the book I wanted was something like £12.99

Tesco had it for under £4

SideOrderofChip · 25/04/2016 17:26

I loved looking at their Christmas tat. Never bought it but loved looking at it.

Figmentofmyimagination · 25/04/2016 17:30

It was the store of my childhood - 50 years ago when shopping was very much a class issue. Marks & spencer was way out of our league - the place for posh people, so we shopped in bhs, littlewoods and C&A - all three a cut above woolworths.

Bhs was the last one standing, and barely changed in all those years. I will miss their woolly tights, but that's all.

TwentyCupsOfTea · 25/04/2016 17:53

My nearest bhs - not in my town - has never seemed to know what is was of who it was trying to attract tbh. Confusing layout with coffee shop next to school section, plonked randomly next to homewares, and nothing ever displayed nicely. I think marks does a better job in terms of store appearance and accessibility, bhs customers will likely turn there. The home stuff was ok but asda living is better really. Can't remember buying anything for years and years.

TheBestChocolateIsFree · 25/04/2016 17:55

I used to go into BHS Oxford street all the time, because it was a shortcut to John Lewis Blush. When we were setting up home we got all our lights there. During the Arcadia years DH didn't let me buy things there due to his ethical issues with Philip Green (unless it was literally the only place stocking age 4 navy school trousers or whatever). Since the sale I've bought the odd thing - some cheap nightdresses for DD that were probably aimed at old ladies but did the job, and a lovely pair of tan wedge sandals that were super cheap and comfy but lost the leather on their toes within 5 minutes - serves me right for being a cheapskate.

flirtygirl · 25/04/2016 18:15

I used to work at bhs, hated and it hasnt moved with the times. However its homeware and lighting is excellent, lighting is far better than debenhams and m & s and they need to keep that going, maybe with a rebrand. If it is closing then ill be sticking up on bedding, towels, some kids clothes and light fittings.

Funny enough they sell some of the only shoes my 17 year old can wear as they do a lot of wide fit styles. The clothes though need burning.

HelenaDove · 25/04/2016 18:20

Im very sorry to hear staffs jobs are at risk.

I bought some black pencil type skirts at their Chelmsford store 13 years ago to wear for the retail job i had then in tv rental.
In the first wash they ended up with dusty white marks all over them Which would NOT fade or come out. Rest of the non BHS wash was fine. I took them back but they refused a refund. Gave me a load of vouchers.

I went to Dorothy Perkins to replace the skirts and they washed up well with the same detergent. (BHS told me it must have been the detergent i was using Not the sales assistants fault if it was their policy) The BHS vouchers ended up in some of the Christmas cards i sent out that year.

HelenaDove · 25/04/2016 18:21

Havent been in a BHS since then.

swg1 · 25/04/2016 18:27

I liked them. They were the only shop to stock petite trousers which were decent, plain and actually fit me :-( Don't know where I'll go now as Next stopped doing a petite range in store and their website is a nightmare.

They did lovely supersoft short sleeved jumpers too. I've got a set I've been wearing for work every winter for five years or so and you wouldn't know they weren't new.

ForalltheSaints · 25/04/2016 18:31

I have sympathy for anyone who loses their job there. I would be concerned if Sports Direct took over any stores as they are a blot on the UK high street.

I probably have not been inside a BHS store since I was a teenager and expect I am not alone in this.

ShelaghTurner · 25/04/2016 18:32

Someone mentioned the branch in Edinburgh, we honeymooned in Scotland and enjoyed several cooked breakfasts in that BHS. We knew how to live.... Grin

HelenaDove · 25/04/2016 18:33

Sports Direct treat their workers like shit.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 25/04/2016 18:42

Philip Green has asset stripped the place. It should be investigated.

bakeoffcake · 25/04/2016 18:49

I agree Ghoul. I just heard on the radio that he took dividends of £400m in the first few years after buying itAngry

The pension deficit is around £570m. He should be made to give back all that money he took out, but he's offered around £80mHmm

Floisme · 25/04/2016 19:03

That £400 million dividend was paid to his wife who resides in Monaco and so presumably paid no tax on it.

And now the pensions deficit. All this from a man who was appointed by the prime minister to lead a public spending review and who accused the government of 'shocking' waste: www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-11512287

Yes actually, I do give two hoots.

Sniv · 25/04/2016 19:05

They were a reliable source of uninspired but serviceable Christmas gifts. The front of the shop used to suddenly sprout heaps of herb and marinade sets, mini spirits with shot glasses, mugs stuffed with mittens and marshmallows, and similar stuff for people you don't actually want to buy a present for.

moreshitandnofuckingredemption · 25/04/2016 19:19

Hear hear flo

Vaara · 25/04/2016 19:23

I would never think of buying clothes there, ever.

I bought DD some stuff when she was a baby but the fabric was so cheap and see through I never went back.

The home stuff I like generally but I'm a snob and would rather buy bedding from The White Company etc.

The only thing I bought from there has been lights, as they have the look of John Lewis but actual John Lewis lights are unbelievably expensive. I got a lovely table lamp for £20 last year.

I won't miss it.

BerylStreep · 25/04/2016 19:27

We buy lighting there and I quite like their outdoor furniture. I find their indoor furniture quite pricey, and get a bit weary of their permanently 'discounted' prices.

CobblerBob · 25/04/2016 19:33

Their lighting can be exceptional. I have some lights in my house that people ALWAYS comment on and expect to be either designer or unique. They were all quite pricey but really good quality BHS.

Their swimwear and cover ups are great too.

CobblerBob · 25/04/2016 19:34

And yes Phillip Green asset stripped it. Shameful.
