To not want ds2, (6) to do his SATS

Ds2 is below average in English and Maths, as we found out during a temper tantrum a few months ago, due to some kids being nasty and the teacher just stated "oh and and he's very behind where he should be" I started a thread about it at the time even tho his last report said he was above average...

ds2 will not pass his SATS, his teachers know this and I know this, I am angry his teacher has graded him a C in effort, even tho he does his best, goes to extra lessons, me and dh do extra lessons with him, and we even had a tutor until dh said fuck this, he fricking 6!

So I am wondering if I can demand that ds does not sit his SATS as we know he will not pass, so why put him through it when he is set to fail.

The above link is a petition calling for a vote of no confidence in Nicky Morgan.

I've never worked for such an incompetent administration - I have lost count of the mistakes made in the changes to assessment this year, all of which have made me have to change my practice yet again through sheer incompetence. None of it has had any benefit whatsoever to the 6/7 year olds I teach. The latest exam publishing error is, ironically, the closest the dfe have come to improving my children's education this year, but is yet more proof that this department are not fit for purpose. The woman can't even spell 'sincerely', ffs even though it's a word she has decided Y5/6 children absolutely must be able to spell ,- this, in a letter to the deputy secretary of the NUT. And don't get me started on academisation. She has got to go.

WellErrr · 24/04/2016 06:52

I voted conservative. Never thought they'd make such a terrible hash of public services.
They seem intent on destroying schools and the NHS, and alienating those who've worked in them their whole lives.

Having said that, I still firmly believe Labour under Ed would have been worse all round. So who the fuck are we supposed to vote for!??

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 24/04/2016 08:25

It's a really odd misspelling of sincerely too. 'Sincerly' I would understand 'sincerily' doesn't really make much sense.
She could do with some work on handwriting too. No chance of getting the 'greater depth' standard with that.

Unfortunately I don't think children not sitting their SATS will help in the long run. I sympathise with you all. My daughter did her SATS 3 years ago, she did well, or so I thought. When she got to high school they tested them all again with their own testing strategy and a lot of the kids came out with lower results. One of her teachers told me this at parents' evening. They do this so they know what classes to put them into.

I just told my daughter to think of SATS as practice for when she gets to high school. Don't put any pressure on them. They might even surprise you.

Feenie · 24/04/2016 09:58

Six year olds don't need to practice for high school.

The tests in Y2 and Y6 have changed this year - hence the fuss.

Feenie · 24/04/2016 10:02

Practise, aaarggh!

Never post till you're had your first coffee - broke my own rule, and look what happened! Good job I haven't signed any letters to union leaders this morning, or who knows what could have happened. .

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 24/04/2016 10:39

She was writing it in a moving car apparently. Not totally sure how that affects spelling.

Has Morgan actually managed to prove anything other than if you want a job as a corporate lawyer and a position in the cabinet, you don't need to be able to spell or answer mental arithmetic questions? It does undermine the government message on education a bit.

Feenie · 24/04/2016 10:51

Ah yes - I can see how writing in a moving vehicle would make you invent words. Hmm

Feenie · 24/04/2016 10:54

I don't think any other Education Secretary has carved out a reputation for being thick.

catkind · 24/04/2016 11:20

OP it sounds like you have a school problem not a SATs problem going on there. Really bad that they're putting pressure on him and you. DS and all the kids I know doing them are not aware it's anything special. DS school call them "puzzle books".

I thought they're not all going to 'fail' the test bit anyway. From what they've said they're calibrating it so average is 100. Is there even a pass/fail threshold on the test for individual kids? I thought what they're all (possibly) going to fail is the teacher assessment given that they have to tick every single box in the new higher standards to pass.
