To ask how many hours a day you do housework?

Excuse the mundane -ness of this post. I grew up in a house where next to no cleaning got done.. That's all I know as normal. Now living in my own house with two children id love to know what is normal?

I do probably about 1-2 hours if you exclude cooking but include laundry, cleaning and tidying. Does that sound about right?

Thanks

I have a toddler home most of the day but it still doesn't need hours cleaning daily.

pearlylum · 23/04/2016 15:29

greasels- Do people really not hoover daily?!?

Again this depends on what is happening in your house.
If you work full time and have children at nursery you probably won't need to hoover every day.

If you are a SAHM with toddlers then you will probably need to.

CerseiHeartsJaime4ever · 23/04/2016 15:53

I do about an hour a day unless its raining in which case its just the washing up/tidying/bathroom/beds.

On a sunny day it could be 2+ because I do ALL the washing including bathmats, nets, coats, any thing that can be removed and washed! No tumble drier you see Sad

Theladyloriana my issue is hoarder DP too. A lot of my cleaning time is spent sorting through carrier bags dumped in places that are full of things like old envelopes or coke can ring pulls. My DM keeps buying the kids clothes they don't need as well, so I have piles of charity shop clothes she's bought that keep getting refreshed. After I've sorted them.... she comes round with another 25 t shirts that look like someone else's rags.

Depends what you include as housework.

Day to day stuff like cooking and clearing up after 2-3 meals, laundry for 4 people, clearing up after the dog, keeping bathrooms pleasant, putting away shopping, tidying and managing 4 people's stuff, hoovering (daily because of dog), emptying bins takes atleast about 3 hours a day.

However it isn't done all at once and not all by one person.

Proper cleaning that involves moving furniture averages out at another couple of hours a week, mainly because some weekends we are busy and don't do anything.

RichPetunia · 23/04/2016 16:26

Practically zero. I have a shit tip of a house😊

ManneryTowers · 23/04/2016 17:14

Proper 'cleaning' as in cleaning inside windows, scrubbing out cupboards, wiping down skirting, polishing is about three solid hours a week.
'Chores' like dusting, washing up, vacuuming, making beds and laundry I can't really count. It's a constant cycle of 10 minutes jobs many times a day.

GoblinLittleOwl · 23/04/2016 17:17

Housework every day?
This is 2016.

pearlylum · 23/04/2016 17:21

goblin what do you mean?

If you are a SAHM with a couple of toddlers there is no option but to do housework every day.

HermioneJeanGranger · 23/04/2016 18:07

20-30 minutes. No DC at home, though.

We both tidy as we go. Last person out of bed makes the bed, airs the bedroom, opens curtains. Dirty clothes go straight into laundry baskets. Dirty dishes go straight in the sink. Rubbish goes straight in the bins (One in each room so no excuse not to!).

We both work so neither of us eat breakfast at home. I start early so home for lunch but it's usually just soup or a sandwich. I wash up from the previous day while the soup is heating up or before I make my sandwich. Dinner takes maybe 20 minutes each night.

I do 3-4 loads of laundry a week - including towels, bedding, work clothes etc. I spray the shower down after I use it. Hoover twice a week - tiny flat so only takes 5 minutes. Kitchen floor swept daily but only takes a minute.

I cannot be arsed to spend hours cleaning! I'd rather watch TV Grin

Jitterybug · 23/04/2016 18:13

Probably an hour a day to include, washing up, wiping surfaces in kitchen and bathroom, tidying, putting washing away, sweeping downstairs floors.

Deeper clean of bathroom and kitchen and mopping floors at the weekend.

Almostfifty · 23/04/2016 18:20

Even when I had four small DC, I only hoovered twice a week, unless there was an incident.

I swept the kitchen floor daily, and kept the bathroom clean. I washed every day. My house was spotless but I didn't clean for the sake of cleaning.

flanjabelle · 23/04/2016 18:21

About an hour each day, should probably do a bit more as I'm a sahm, but I hate it. I tidy away all the toys and general crap, put the hoover round everywhere, do the washing up and clean the kitchen, wipe round the bathroom most days. Then if I have a cleaning day I will give everywhere a good sort and scrub and that would probably take 2.5 hours. I only live in a two bedroom flat though.

notagiraffe · 23/04/2016 18:24

If you include wiping down surfaces, stacking and emptying dishwasher, laying table etc and laundry - over an hour a day. But proper cleaning - maybe half an hour a day - bathroom one day, sweeping another, hoovering a third day, dust and polish the next etc. Very little.

notagiraffe · 23/04/2016 18:25

When DC were small I hoovered and mopped every day. Got bored of that after about nine years, so stopped. No one else in the family is keen enough to do it themselves, so it gets done when I have the energy - once a week.
