To just want to be able to buy my dd some age appropriate clothing?

bridge83 · 19/04/2016 18:29

My dd is 10yo so she's tricky to buy clothes for as she's in between kiddy and more teenage clothes. She likes to be comfortable whisky playing in our street with her friends so tends to wear jogging bottoms t shirts, shorts etc but she also likes her dresses, skirts and jump suits for when we are going out and about.

So today I'm shopping for her some summer clothes. Usually she comes with me but we go away in a weeks time and she's in school so I need to get her some stuff. Anyway I went into every shop imaginable ie Next, New Look, H+M, Tammy, Zara and all I came across were cut off belly tops, shorts that were that short they could only be described as hot pants, bra halter neck tops and tops with inappropriate slogans.

I do not want my dd who is only in year 5 to be walking round with her belly and backside hanging out simple as that but clearly a lot of parents do not mind as they wouldn't sell these kind of clothes. I realise my dd is growing up and pretty soon she won't even let me chose anything for her and that's absolutely fine but for now I buy and shop for her clothes and I just want to be able to go into a shop and buy something nice but ahe appropriate.

I see it all the time, girls my dd age, sometimes younger wearing clothes that quite frankly look to small for them ie bums practically hanging out of their shorts/leggings. Belly tops that show their crop tops/bras etc and I think it's awful. I don't except my dd to want to wear Minnie Mouse jumpers or anything like that but I expect with all the shops on the high street these days to be able to go in and not come out empty handed. So am I somehow being unreasonable about this or does anyone else with dd's feel the same?

My DDs have vests from m & s long, thin straps kind in stretchy cotton that they wear under the crop tops. It's trendy and hides tummies. 2x10 and 11 here.

JeffreySadsacIsUnwell · 20/04/2016 07:16

I think it depends on the store location. I do know where the OP is coming from - I have a 6yo DD and when I went into our local H&M and Next (usually staples alongside Boden, John Lewis and Joules), there wasn't very much appropriate even for younger girls. I asked in store; the H&M store said that they get stock in at different times, starting with the fashion-led new season stuff and they'll get more basics (I think she may have actually said 'more boring' ) in a couple of weeks. Next just said that we could order anything online to be delivered in-store.

Presumably all the nice clothes everyone else is finding online and in their local stores will make its way to us eventually!

LumpySpacedPrincess · 20/04/2016 07:16

Weird, I just bought 11 year old dd a boat load of nice stuff of Next.

Jumpsuits, leggings, T Shirts and jeans.

Op, I would agree with you if it were true.

ExConstance · 20/04/2016 07:21

Boden - the older girls and teen ranges are lovely, with interesting and appropriate designs on the T shirts.

CodyKing · 20/04/2016 07:37

Heree* Cody. That's just the first of the many many normal tshirts in amongst the crop tops.

My 11/13 year old girls wouldn't wear that -

curren · 20/04/2016 08:17

What would they wear then Cody?

CodyKing · 20/04/2016 08:19

They want a basic tshirt - jersey - maybe some pattern - but not overly girly or babyish - no character clothing -

A decent length

No glitter sequins or rainbows - or ponies - or #selfie type writing

curren · 20/04/2016 08:34

Sports direct, next, TK Max, H&M all do plain t-shirts. All decent lengths.

I got Dd and dss few the other week.

blearynweary · 20/04/2016 08:38

Cody I buy dds plain Tees from the boys section. I agree it's hard to get plain simple ts for girls without sparkles, lace inserts and my dds particular bugbear, puffy sleeves!

Artandco · 20/04/2016 08:40

Buy German and Swedish brands online

escapedfrommordor · 20/04/2016 08:44

I just browsed Next online and I can't see a problem with the girls clothing. There's lots of nice vests and shorts for summer, they don't look particularly short or inappropriate. I find it hard to believe you could go to all those shops and find nothing but crop tops and hot pants.

OneMagnumisneverenough · 20/04/2016 11:26

I think you can give the OP the benefit of the doubt to an extent as there has been similar threads where people have moaned about the offering in their local store and then been surprised that what is available on-line or in other stores is different. i.e. one poster was unable to find any plain bright coloured t-shirts or tops for her little boy in her local Next but when pointed to the on-line store was really happy with what was there. I think certainly in some of the smaller shops, to keep them looking co-ordinated, they only get a few of the ranges in rather than a selection from each range.

UptownFunk00 · 20/04/2016 12:18

YANBU and this is coming from a 26 year old - I honestly can't see why teen and pre-teen girls need to wear sexualised and / or uncomfortable clothing just to look good. I don't seethe same with teen boys until they are at least 16.

But it's up to individual parents to decide and I respect that.

There are plenty of online stores with age appropriate stuff though.

Cutecat78 · 20/04/2016 12:23

We get DSD loads of Primarni.

They are 11 and 9 but all I n 13 and 11 year old clothes they grow out of it all before it falls apart.

They have loads of leggings and t-shirts etc as do H&M and Matalan..,

Not sure where you are shopping.

fieldfare · 20/04/2016 12:32

I'm assuming the terrible fashion she is talking about is ether bottom skimming shorts and bra flashing tops at an inappropriate age.
From your post on page 1 you seem to think that the OP has an issue with the weight of the child, presumably from her comment about the clothing of others being "too small". I didn't read it that way, simply that they have too much flesh on display at such a young age.

Fwiw, my daughter is 13 and looks more like 16/17 as she has an incredible figure already. Grown men do double takes as she walks along beside me which make her feel really uncomfortable. She is not a fan of exposing so much flesh as some of her friends, and with curves some of the clothing designed for a 13 yr old is ridiculous on her.

OP, we found Bermuda length shorts in sainsburys the other day, they went down to a size 6 I believe so may fit your Dd. Vest tops and t shirts we buy from next, Primark, h&m, tk maxx.

Enb76 · 20/04/2016 12:46

I have a 7 year old who is the size of a 10 year old - I hate trying to find clothes for her. I don't have much cash and she's not a pink and frilly disney child, nor is she happy wearing boys clothes - she's fun skirts and dresses, no pink, no purple, no sequins, no frills - John Lewis is my go to but it's expensive. The cheaper shops have mostly horrible clothes but I still go in because occasionally there's something.

carrie74 · 20/04/2016 12:49

DD wears a lot of Gap. When they're doing their 30/40% off promotions it brings prices right down. I think some quality has been compromised for these prices, but on the whole we're both happy enough with them.

bridge83 · 20/04/2016 12:57

Woah wait a minute I'm not having a pop at overweight children not at all. When I said kids wearing clothes that don't fit properly I meant parents who allow them to purposely wear shorts that are too small. I didn't mean it was becuEe they were over weight though.

No I didn't find belly tops and that in Next only in the other shops. I love Next but there are a lot of nice but babyish t shirts and clothes in there ie Disney tops and like I said she's in between that stage of young and teenager-e- clothes. I never used to have a problem buying clothes for her from next when she was younger and I used to come out with bags of stuff from the sales but it's more tricky since she got older.

I'm guessing the OP's taste is just not UK High street. I do think you can find some gems in Zara and H&M. Often it's how you put it together, surely you could layer a crop top or put an A line mini dress over leggings ? I'm yet to see a 10 year old in crop top and leggings. Perhaps the OP should look at continental brands who don't do Disney and crop tops to make it easier. She can definitely find what she wants online but on the whole she will have to be prepared to pay a bit more than Next prices.

Reasonably priced:
www.verbaudet.co.uk

Pricier but their sales and clearance sections often are 60-70% off and quality is fantastic.

A little cheaper (but still top end of high street) and on some UK high streets is Jigsaw. Muted colours, no slogans and of course Boden and Jonnie B range. Good luck OP.

ArmfulOfRoses · 20/04/2016 13:15

I don't understand what's so offensive about a child's stomach.

Gryla · 20/04/2016 13:35

I find it easier to shop on-line with H & M than look in the shop.

But mixture of - Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys, H & M & S, peacocks and I'm managed to clothe a 10 year old DD for almost but not quite a year with none of these problems.

Some of the t-shirt dresses MIL has bought are a bit clingy IMO while being a very decent length so do I understand the concerns - at ten DD had hips but currently not a bust these kind of dresses would make her look years older and be bit too sexy IMO in only a very short time frame.

TwentyCupsOfTea · 20/04/2016 16:52

Asda!!

queenMab99 · 20/04/2016 17:01

Morrisons 'Nutmeg' range have some reasaonable stuff, they go up to age 12.

stealthsquiggle · 20/04/2016 17:07

My 9yo DD wears age 13/14 clothes. Mostly, nowadays, secondhand Boden/Johnnie B from eBay, or Gap/Old Navy from outlet stores in the U.S. I have managed to find things which she and I both like and are age appropriate. She has a few things from Next - online has a far larger selection than any shop that I have been into.
