Seventeen Loads of Washing... I'm not am I?

AIBU in the slightest? Seventeen (spelt out so you're sure it's not a typo). 17 loads of washing this week I have done and put away. (As well as working 72+ hours) I accept I am a little bit OCD about the sheets and towels being on a hot wash alone and that only white things go in the white wash but I do not understand how this household can make so much damn washing!?!!! These are all full loads.

AIBU to ask how many loads you do on an average week, if towels and bedding are done at least once a week and if 22 flannels are an average weeks usage in your household?? I probably am but please ...tell me they are not going to put "now we have no clean clothes to wear" on my gravestone?

There has to be an easier way than this... Surely?

We only have a 6kg washing machine so I do 2-3 loads a day. I have an obsession with "staying on top" of washing.

OohMavis · 17/04/2016 16:19

We have a 12kg. About three loads a week.

OohMavis · 17/04/2016 16:19

And we're a family of four, one 5yo and one toddler.

madamginger · 17/04/2016 16:19

There are 5 of us and I do 2 x bedding, 2 x towels, 1x White and 2 x dark loads a week. Sometimes I put on an extra dark wash and I do a delicate wash as needed

MsJamieFraser · 17/04/2016 16:20

I get the time OP, We also work FT, and we also run a football team, it takes less than 5 mins to throw a washing in, and then in the tumbler, dh folds and outs away in the wrong drawers but they are out of sight out of mind.

MeanwhileHighAboveTheField · 17/04/2016 16:22

I probably do an average of 3 a day...

Catmuffin · 17/04/2016 16:24

I do about 7-8 loads a week with a family of four.

Squiff85 · 17/04/2016 16:25

4 of us, I do 8 a week I would guess

Voteforpedr0 · 17/04/2016 16:25

14 loads a week here, 12 loads at 60 degrees then 2 at 90 and my electricity bill isn't too bad

Pinkheart5915 · 17/04/2016 16:26

I do four loads a week one of which will be bedding and towels. There is me, dh and 7 month old ds.

What does a household do with 22 flannels? Confused

CakeUpWall · 17/04/2016 16:27

I do more than 17 loads per week, but after reading some of the comments here I'm too scared to say how many. Blush

5 of us plus dog. 2 washing machines.

DistanceCall · 17/04/2016 16:29

Re: flannels. I do the hot flannel thing to cleanse my face every day. I love it. That's 7 flannels a week, and, as the OP said, flannels really don't take up that much space. I also change my bedclothes every week, and wash my pyjama (or sleeping T-shirt, rather) about once a week or a bit less.

Outerwear (including hoodies) doesn't need to be washed that often, unless it's filthy. You can probably cut down on that. Likewise trousers and jeans.

BoboChic · 17/04/2016 16:29

I have just bought a 9kg washing machine in order to reduce the ridiculous number of washes done in this household every week.

I would be happy with 17!

AimUnder · 17/04/2016 16:33

You don't need to do bedding weekly.

I would expect max of 5 loads

redskytonight · 17/04/2016 16:42

I think with the convenience of washing machines, some people are just washing far too much. Would you deem all that stuff "dirty" if you had to wash it all by hand?

In our house it's about 7 loads a week. (2 adults, 2 older DC)
I wash bedding fortnightly, bath towels weekly, other towels twice weekly.
Everyone has 1 clean top and underwear daily. Trousers/skirts etc washed less frequently.
And sports stuff.

I suspect to get near17 you are washing stuff that has scarcely been worn.

MeanwhileHighAboveTheField · 17/04/2016 16:42

My kids really are filthy - no chance of getting more than a day out of their clothes. Sometimes several changes needed a day. Also involved in muddy sports.

MyQuaterLifeCrisis · 17/04/2016 16:43

15 a week here on average. Three of us.

Dumbledoresgirl · 17/04/2016 16:44

I am Shock that you even know how many loads you do a week. It doesn't work like that in my household. Stuff gets washed as and when. Sometimes, on a good drying day, with a backlog of washing, I do 2 or even 3 loads in a day. Other days, none at all. I've no idea how many loads it works out per week and I doubt any 2 weeks are the same.

We are a family of 4 adults and 2 teens btw.

So I don't know the number of loads I wash, but I do know that towels (6 bath towels, 5 hand towels, 4 flannels) only get done once a week, possibly once every 10 days. Sheets, 4 singles, one double, plus 6 pillow cases ditto. Dh insists on a new shirt every day but everyone else wears a shirt for 2 days. Underwear and socks all changed daily. Whites always done separately from coloureds. Usually have a hot coloured wash and a colder coloured wash but don't segregate the washing any more than that.

I really don't understand where 17 loads is coming from.

newnameoldstart · 17/04/2016 16:46

I do about 10loads but our washing machine is 12kg it would have been what 20 in our old 6kg machine?

But there are 2 adults and 6 children.

Shockingundercrackers · 17/04/2016 16:48

OP you have OCD. I bet my ass you're clean as a whistle... in which case you really don't need to wash your towels more than once a week and your sheets every 10 days. Bet your kids are clean too - every 14 days for them.

Only wash things when they are actually dirty and you will get your life back.

Shockingundercrackers · 17/04/2016 16:50

Oh and also, ditch those flannels and chuck your bath sheets in the bin. Buy smaller towels - not only do they dry quicker (and hence don't go stinky) but they take up much less space in the machine.

MyLifeisaboxofwormgears · 17/04/2016 16:50

Wow - I do one load of whites a week and one load of darks.
There are 3 of us.
Unless I am doing sheets the whites wash is always small as we don't wear many whites - DH prefers dark shirts and socks.

I calculated once that, over my lifetime, I will spend over a year hanging up and putting away laundry - this is why hanging up and putting away laundry is a family fun shared activity which we all do and grumble about. And thus we are all motivated to keep it down.
Days when the animals are ill and crap all over my togs are exceptions, but on one particularly bad day I generated an entire darks wash on my own as I had to keep changing my clothes.

pocketsaviour · 17/04/2016 16:53

1 load a week.

I have never felt more grateful to be single and have my DS moved out Grin

IDismyname · 17/04/2016 16:58

3 of us here... Probably averages out at 1 wash a day. (Super King) sheets changed weekly, towels every other week. 2 or 3 small quick washed with gym kit or V dirty biking gear.

NewLife4Me · 17/04/2016 16:59

No way would I do that much washing.
I only did 3/4 loads when there were 5 of us at home.
Stop washing everything, is it necessary to do beds towels and clothes in the same week?
Can you stagger them so bedding can go with towels each week, the another bed and towels the following week.
