Seventeen Loads of Washing... I'm not am I?

AIBU in the slightest? Seventeen (spelt out so you're sure it's not a typo). 17 loads of washing this week I have done and put away. (As well as working 72+ hours) I accept I am a little bit OCD about the sheets and towels being on a hot wash alone and that only white things go in the white wash but I do not understand how this household can make so much damn washing!?!!! These are all full loads.

AIBU to ask how many loads you do on an average week, if towels and bedding are done at least once a week and if 22 flannels are an average weeks usage in your household?? I probably am but please ...tell me they are not going to put "now we have no clean clothes to wear" on my gravestone?

There has to be an easier way than this... Surely?

1 load of whites.
A couple of dark washes
1 light load
2 loads of towels
1 load of bed linen

2 adults, 1 child

pigsinmud · 17/04/2016 14:18

Flip! There are 6 of us - dc range from 9-17. I would guess at 5 loads of clothes washing per week, 2 of towels/bedding.

RiverTam · 17/04/2016 14:19

Bonkers, but I think that the vast majority of MNers do excessive amounts of washing.

There are 3 of us - me, DH, and DD (6). No uniforms, DH does an office job and usually wears stuff more than once apart from underwear and socks. Same for me (working at home). DD clean undies, socks and tops each day, rest depends, if it looks clean it's worn again. Towels every couple of weeks. Bedding once a monthish, more in summer. I fail to see why small children especially need their bedding changed every week.

We're all fit, healthy and clean. On 3-4 loads a week (1 whites, 2 coloureds, 1 towels/bedding/emergency). Growing up there were 4 of us, my mum did 4-5 loads a week.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 17/04/2016 14:20

I have a feeling some people in your household are using the laundry-basket instead of the wardrobe.

I can understand things worn next to the skin need to be washed after every wear but it sounds like in your home everything is laundered after having been worn for an hour or two.

Maybe if people had a lot fewer items they wouldn't be getting changed into fresh clothes so often. I seem to remember my mother washing sweaters once in a blue moon and blouses/skirts/frocks after half a dozen wears and never after having worn those items just the once unless they were actually stained. Even now I generally wear my work-shirts/blouses at least twice before they are laundered. They don't need it as I bathe and use industrial-strength anti-perspirant before I get dressed every day.

Almostfifty · 17/04/2016 14:20

When my DC were small I used to do about that a week, but we're talking four boys getting dirty outside as often as possible.

I washed bedding fortnightly. My top tip is to give them all one towel, and make them hang it up behind the door in their room and use it daily instead of using all the towels in the bathroom as they were wont to do. Then I'd only need to wash them once a week, after all, they're all fresh and clean after a bath or shower.

I've still got three of them at home and the washing is down to around five loads. They do their own towels and bedding now, if they put their washing in the basket I'll throw it in when I do ours.

BestZebbie · 17/04/2016 14:20

We do about 5 loads a week including 4 mostly of clothing (~1 each plus an overflow load) and 1 of towels & muslins for 2 adults and a toddler. Every couple of weeks there is probably an extra overflow load just for bedding or tablecloths - if there is just one tablecloth or sheet etc that needs doing it goes in with our clothing.
We did use at least 22 "flannels" a week (more like 40!) and did about 3-5 extra loads a week when we were using cloth nappies, though.

Muskateersmummy · 17/04/2016 14:21

Wow! I can't imagine how you even have the time to work 72 hours and do 17 washes! When do you sleep? Between cycles?!

There are two of us and a child (4) I put on 3/4 loads on my day off, and dh does a similar amount on his day off. He wears a clean shirt every day, and both dd and I wear a fresh outfit each day. Then dh and I change when we get home into jeans and a clean top. The amount of towel and flannel washing seems ott to me. We do one load a week.

formerbabe · 17/04/2016 14:22

We are a family of four. I do a minimum of 3 loads everyday. I can't bear towels being used more than once so it's my own fault!

MewlingQuim · 17/04/2016 14:22

How can anyone use 22 flannels a week Shock

We are a family if 3. DH and I both do sports and still do only about 3 loads a week. 8kg drum machine.
1 load bedding
1 load towels/sports stuff
1load clothes, lights or darks whichever is the biggest pile.

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 17/04/2016 14:23

Four people in the house, 8kg washer, minimum one load a day. Average about ten loads a week, and a half load of whites as there are only a handful of white things in the house (senior schools need to duck off with their white polo shirts!).

We own about a dozen flannels. They never get used in the bathroom so I commandeered them as cleaning rags, which they're excellent for. I can't imagine ever needing 22.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/04/2016 14:25

We must use loads of flannels- 3 of us and use 2 each a day... 42 flannels, do I win ?Grin

bloodyteenagers · 17/04/2016 14:26

Even when I have everyone home and mates we don't get through 17 loads of washing a week. And there will beat least 7 of us.

Two loads of towels a week.
Two loads of bedding a week. SimIlar colours so can go together. Because it gets changed mid week.
Then a load every other day of darks and one of lights. But not on the same day, so today would be lights, tomorrow darks.

But then hoodies don't get washed daily. Nor do jeans and tracksuit bottoms if not used for excercise.

Bedding is easy as I got rid of the quilts, so at times I will be one of those add people and change daily.

bloodyteenagers · 17/04/2016 14:27

Oh and I own two flannels that get bunged in with any wash. They are used purely to cover the small child's eyes when hair washed.

dementedma · 17/04/2016 14:29

Love MN laundry threads because they genuinely leave me gobsmacked at the amount of laundry people do. One poster says 24 loads a week! 17 loads a week? I didn't do that much even when dcs were in reusable nappies!
Nowadays we have 4 adults most of the time, sometimes 5.
I probably do about 5 loads a week, if that.

Stillwishihadabs · 17/04/2016 14:29

1x sheets
1x towels
2X darks
2X lights
1x whites
1X brights
1x delicates

That's 9 and I have a 9kg machine.

HackerFucker22 · 17/04/2016 14:30

I've done 6 this week.... which is pretty average for us. Family of 4.

1 is the bed linen, 1 towels, 1 whites, 2 colours and 1 DP's work gear.

BaldHedgehog · 17/04/2016 14:31

What constitutes as "load"? MIL says "I've done 3 loads today already". Her understanding of load is 3 vests in a 6 kg washing machine. My load is full with just a bit of space left inside the drum to let the clothes rotate. Bedding and towels changed when needed. 2 adults and 2 mud/grit/puddle loving small boys.We are on average 2-3 loads a week with everyday clothes, extra washing is piled to to make up a full load-towels,bedding,DH work clothes

Two of us here, 3 loads a week - clothes and bedding and towels all in one.

Do flannels need washing every use?

CockacidalManiac · 17/04/2016 14:33

whrn my bedding gets crusty, I take it up the garden and beat it with a stick.

rosy71 · 17/04/2016 14:35

There are 4 of us: 2 adults & 2 children. I have done 4 loads this weekend: 1 load adult clothes, 1 load kids clothes, 1 load whites & 1 load sports stuff & towels. Beds have been changed but I haven't put the bedding on to wash yet. I've done nothing else since last Sunday.

TheWildOnes · 17/04/2016 14:36

2 adults and 3dc and I do no more than 7 a week. Bedding is changed weekly too.

Stillwishihadabs · 17/04/2016 14:37

For eg "white " load (washed at 60) is 5x ds' white school shirts, 5x dd white polo shirts, dd games top, white underwear , sports socks (x5 ish) my white work shirts ( average of 2 per week), 5-6 white t-shirts both boys sleep in.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 17/04/2016 14:38

I do loads of washing even though we re wear things like jeans and hoodies-

Bedding weekly- 2 loads
Towels weekly- 1 load
Sports kits - 1 load
Plus a load a day of clothes.

HidingUnderARock · 17/04/2016 14:38

It is a lot, but I probs do about the same with a house of 4.

Sheets, duvet covers and towels are easily 3 loads
One outfit per day (whites in with sheets/towels) plus 2x sports and swim kits + extra outfits for days when there are clubs and for some messy/dirty weekend tasks.

Its a lot, but the measure is why.
Is it because everyone has to wear 2 outfits + PJs every day? If so, is that a choice or is it necessary?
Is it because everyone uses a big towel every day and wants it to be clean for them?

If you want those things then you will have a lot of washing.
