use the non-English word que when they really want to say CUE

It's not a typo. I see it very regularly on forums and it does my fucking head in.

Now, que lots of people telling me IABU Wink

Because 'cue' and 'queue' are both pronounced the same, it's not a massive leap to misspell either as 'que' IMO.

Yes it is, because "qu" in standard English pronunciation is pronounced "kw". Therefore "que" must be pronounced "kw" plus a schwa. I think the only exception to that is "queue", and that is because it's got the extra "ue" in and no-one is going to say "kwyou". That means that for anyone who knows Spanish, and anyone who has watched Fawlty Towers, the word "que" gets read as "kay".

TooOldForGlitter · 16/04/2016 15:26

Thanks ptumbi, I had convinced myself I was wrong Smile

UpsiLondoes · 16/04/2016 19:25

Why is it patronising to point out a spelling error? if you think it is belittling your post and you want strangers to read it and care, then care enough to proof your spelling. And if spelling correctly is such a task, talk to someone in person rather than communicate in writing.

Alexa444 · 16/04/2016 22:36

One of my fb friends always spells now as naw. I have to get stern with myself to not correct her as shd is just so lovely lol

ArseholesOnToast · 16/04/2016 23:49

herecomethepotatoes peoples' is incorrect. Surely you mean people's?

Mslg · 16/04/2016 23:54

People calling their baby 'babes', 'bubs', 'baba', 'babe' on the pregnancy/antenatal boards drives me insane. Not entirely sure why but it does Confused

herecomethepotatoes · 17/04/2016 03:51

I did. A typo. Well done, you're awesome. Hi-5 yourself, in the face!

'Que' drives me fucking mental. The ONLY meaning of 'que' is 'Manuel'.

'Queue' is derived from the French for tail. 'Cue' is a stage direction, isn't it?

I say this lots on here but the next person to write 'excited for Friday' on FB is going to get the full 'why would you be excited for Friday? Who is she? What's she been up to?' treatment.

ScarletForYa · 17/04/2016 05:43

Yanbu.

Que is not even an English word Drives me nuts.

And don't get me started on breath and breathe.

AugustaFinkNottle · 17/04/2016 07:48

Why is there such a plague of "discretes" when people mean "discreet"? It seems to be encountered most often amongst idiots who insist that breastfeeding must be "discrete".

ArseholesOnToast · 17/04/2016 08:28

herecomethepotatoes I am awesome. I'm glad you're in awe and I'm even more glad all that education wasn't wasted but it seems a shame you don't check for typos when you're the linguist here. Couldn't other people's errors be typos?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 17/04/2016 08:33

It's people who want to close the boarders that do my head in. It's 'borders'. I think they are muddled with their desire to repel all boarders.

TheoriginalLEM · 17/04/2016 08:34

thank you for this thread . i genuinely wasn't sure if it was Cue or queue.

now i know.

TheoriginalLEM · 17/04/2016 08:38

do people really get wound up about this???

on a forum where most people are posting fromtheir phone?

my English is far from perfect but i am nit an idiot. i have several bits of paper to prove this to myself.

but if it makes you feel superior. carry on.

i bet that post dives everyone to homicidal yearnings

AugustaFinkNottle · 17/04/2016 08:44

It's not a matter of feeling superior; I find it just makes me feel uncomfortable and a bit irritated, and it spoils the flow of whatever I'm reading.

What is interesting is that people get so defensive about it. If you insist other people must be feeling superior, it rather implies that you are feeling inferior - but that's entirely self-generated.

Sparklingbrook · 17/04/2016 08:47

If the thread makes sense but has a few spelling errors then I can't see the big deal. You can tut inwardly but no need to point it out on the thread.

Limer · 17/04/2016 08:53

I've seen Que misspelled as Kay. Thought the writer meant 'Okay" whereas in fact they meant 'What?' Yes, they'd watched Fawlty Towers (hence the usage), but had never seen the word written down.

LuluJakey1 · 17/04/2016 08:53

Alice, they use it because they think 'queue' is spelled 'que' and they don't know the difference between 'cue' and 'queue' .

TheoriginalLEM · 17/04/2016 08:56

ooooh nice try with the pa "you must feel inferior "

trust me, i really don't. i just find these threads a little bit toe curling that someone is so upset about how someone wr9otes on an internet forum.

In books and officual communications bad grammar boils my piss. My boss regularly sends letters with some right howlers. THAT really does make me stabby. On here ? not so much

AliceInUnderpants · 17/04/2016 08:56

on a forum where most people are posting fromtheir phone?

Then it's an intentional error, as 'que' is not a word.

OP posts:
TheoriginalLEM · 17/04/2016 08:58

see - i noticed some of the mistakes in my post before i posted but it seems my fat fingers were on a roll. does it mwtter?

go and have a nice cup of tea and breathe

TheoriginalLEM · 17/04/2016 09:04

Honestly, i have never seen this particular mistake but now we are on the subject, i think que is far better than cue.

the visual image cue elicits in that context is someone being prodded with a snooker cue.

queue is where you wait. ir you do queuing.

So i think actually OP you make a very good argument for que to be incorporated into the English language as the new word for when cue means, well, que!!! Wink

bloody homophones!

ScarletForYa · 17/04/2016 09:16

Sorry that would be nonsensical.

Cue is from the theatre surely;
'Cue the song'
'Cue the chorus'
'Cue whatever character'

Autocue being a mechanical prompt.

It's used to indicate a prompt for what comes next.

So, in the context this forum 'i posted a picture on Facebook, cue all my friends clicking like'

I think some people think it means a queue of people saying something on a prompt.

clam · 17/04/2016 09:17

OK, well while we're at it, I get REALLY ENRAGED by the constant mis-use, on MN and in real life, of lay/lie and lose/loose.
