To think that maybe everything does happen for a reason?

Does anyone think that our lives are planned out for us and that everything happens for a reason?

Have you ever had bad things happen which at the time makes you feel pretty bleak but in hindsight you thought that the event steered your life in a direction it otherwise wouldn't have and therefore it was "supposed to happen"?

Or is life just full of coincidences?

It's just one of those stupid things people say about quirky coincidences or first world angsty problems like he didn't text back or you didn't get accepted on the yoga teaching course you applied for.

Did the holocaust happen for a reason then? Other than the Nazis were complete maniacs?

It's so dumb. I hope everyone stops saying it forever.

I'm sorry to anyone who feels offended by my post, it really wasn't my intention and I was just musing about what people think or feel about fate or destiny.

A very good friend of mine lost her 14 month old son not long ago in a very sad accident and about 6 months after his death she said that the only good she could find in the tragedy was..... (and then gave her reason).

She definitely didn't think her son died for a reason, she was just trying to find something positive to take from it, it was just her way of coping I think.

I'm surrounded by awful things at work, upsetting things, all involving children and I know those things don't happen for a reason. I guess my initial question was more about whether we try and find some light amongst the darkness and that looking for coincidences or reasons is just one method of coping.

that is exactly it - a coping mechanism. When someone dies before their time, there's nothing really to say except 'I'm sorry' and 'shit happens' but it is human nature to try and find something better.

there isn't anything better, sadly. We are all only temporary residents on a bumpy ride.

things happen due to scientific laws, coincidence and/or human or animal action (good or bad).

all we can do is appreciate the good things and not beat ourselves up about the bad things that aren't someone's fault.
