To think that a 12 year old should NOT have a MacBook

It's her birthday soon and she will be 13 all she wants is a MacBook I've said she can have a Windows laptop... It's only for farting around on, what's the point?

OP posts:

*More developers now use OS X than any other desktop operating system Primal Lass.

Ha ha. Good - I'll make sure I drop that one in when we are having our usual 'Apple is/is not shite' argument (I like Apple stuff, he doesn't).*

I'd look at the link provided before you look like an ass when arguing! According to the statistics she posted, nearly twice as many use Windows than OSx.

PrimalLass · 10/04/2016 19:35

I did try to read it and didn't understand

herecomethepotatoes · 10/04/2016 19:57

@Primal - it is a little geek-tastic but totally goes against the notion that coders or IT people are using Macs. OSx accounts for 26.2% whereas Windows comes in numerous forms. All the OSx variants are lumped together to get that percentage. However, Win 7 has 23%, Win 10 has 21% and Win 8 has 6%. Sum them and it's nearly 2:1 in Microsofts favour.

People talking about boot camp have forgotten Hackintosh. you can run OSx on non-Windows machines. Takes a little more skill to set up.

This thread's gone way off topic.

Hope the OP lets us know her decision!

LivingInMidnight · 10/04/2016 20:13

Not forgotten hackintosh, but you can't compare setting OS X up on an unsupported machine to using bootcamp.

From my understanding. Apple has a deal for schools. Op you can ask the school whether you can buy it through them. Some schools do that. It's cheaper that way.

OP here, when I created this thread, I didn't anticipate it to be used as a general argument between Mac and Windows. With regards to DD, I have stretched my budget to 200 pounds, she has found a 2nd hand MacBook for 600 pounds and she has 300 pounds in her bank account. So she is going to use the birthday money she gets from everyone else/save up the extra 100 pounds and buy it for her birthday.

Kewcumber · 11/04/2016 10:30

I think that's a good solution OP - she will probably really look after it when she's put so much money into it.

TattyDevine · 11/04/2016 10:54

I have to admit I am considering getting my 8 year old one, for his 9th birthday. I got my Mac about a year ago and I honestly don't think I will ever go back to Windows.

A lot of it is just personal preference of course regarding the pros and cons.

My son's Windows laptop (which is one of my old ones) has given up the ghost so I've been letting him use my MAC a bit and he much prefers it.

Not sure which way I'll go with it...

CallarMorvern · 11/04/2016 11:20

That's a good solution OP. Hopefully the fact that she's contributed a big chunk of it will make her appreciate it more.

sportinguista · 11/04/2016 11:30

A Mac may be a good long term buy and she may find that she uses it for more things than just internet. You could may be find she wishes to learn coding or some of the design software.

I don't have a macbook but an imac and ipad as I'm a designer but I probably will buy one at some point for onsite contracts. In all the years I've worked on macs (around 25) I've found them to have less issues than PC's overall. Even DH is going to get one now and we will finally get rid of the PC which is ALWAYS having something up with it.

But as PP say, insure it and make it clear that it is to be taken care of. My DS uses my mac sometimes and he loves it.

Good idea. My DD put $500 into buying her Macbook. I've let her know that if she breaks it then I will replace it with a very crappy Windows laptop unless she can find another $500 (which she could potentially manage by working most of the summer).

theres nothing wrong with a 12 year old having a macbook you know, when i was 12 i had one, a macbook air

Thisisworsethananticpated · 11/02/2021 23:51

It literally depends on budget surely

BlackForestCake · 12/02/2021 00:34

I wonder how the OPs DD got on with her Macbook and if she is still using it FIVE YEARS LATER?

RiojaRose · 12/02/2021 01:28

This is a zombie thread.
But if the 12 year-old did get a MacBook she’s probably still using it Grin

Zevia · 12/02/2021 01:44

Make sure you get it insured if you get one. We only had a one year warranty and it feels like as soon as the warranty expired, it needed repairs every few months. Wont be getting a mac again.

Zevia · 12/02/2021 01:44

Oh, zombie, nm....

CounsellorTroi · 12/02/2021 07:54

@ChangedUsername12345

Well I know there's nothing wrong with her having one, but I get 12 fucking grand a year!!!! I can NOT afford a thousand pounds on a laptop for her when I can get her a Windows laptop for £150! And I told her this and apparently I'm "The worst mother in the world and all her friends have one" Now I couldn't give a flying fuck what her friends have, I'm not thier mum.
Tell her she’ll appreciate it a lot more when she has saved/earned the money to pay for it herself.
