I've messed up...

Posted here for traffic, sorry.

Last night I got very drunk and went home with a man I met in a nightclub (I'm single btw) and the condom split. I don't take the pill as I've been single for many years and don't make a habit of having one night stands. I am currently about two weeks past my period, so at my 'fertile' time. I went to get the morning after pill this morning as soon as I woke up, and the pharmacist said due to where I am in my cycle it could fail, and said something about getting a coil fitted on Monday. I've been freaking out all day, and I bought some of the Clearblue ovulation tests (£23! Yikes!) to see whether I was ovulating. It came back negative. Sorry to sound dense, but does this mean I'm in the clear and can stop panicking?

Did you take the MAP?

Fluffyears · 09/04/2016 19:32

Unfortunately not as sperm can live for several days. I'd take the MAP and talk to the GP about getting a coil in place. It's frustrating as you did try to take appropriate precautions.

DrRanjsRightEyebrow · 09/04/2016 19:33

No it doesn't. Sperm can live in the vagina for up to 7 days and you could ovulate udring the next week. Sorry... you need to be tested for STD's too.

ImperialBlether · 09/04/2016 19:33

No, keep panicking! Go and get a coil fitted on Monday - that's really good advice. The ovulation test tells you whether you're ovulating now, not whether you were last night.

DropYourSword · 09/04/2016 19:33

I think you should be cautious just in case. It's still not too late to take the morning after pull, as it sounds from your OP like you didn't because the pharmacist said there was a chance it wouldn't work. Except if you don't take it, there's definitely no chance of it working! I'd follow up with a full STD check and the coil appointment you have been advised (although they may not fit one as I'm sure I was told when I got mine that there was an increased chance of complications if you had an STD. That might just apply to standard fitting though, and not emergency contraception)

Nothavingfunrightnow · 09/04/2016 19:33

You should take the MAP regardless.

StupidGirl4568 · 09/04/2016 19:35

Just to add I did take the MAP this morning, about 11 hours after the deed.

I have a ten year old morning after pill failure... get the coil fitted.

brummiesue · 09/04/2016 19:38

I got pregnant a couple of months ago after a one off and taking map immediately, I wouldn't push you to have a coil but just be aware the map doesn't always work

EarthboundMisfit · 09/04/2016 19:39

Where on earth can you get a coil fitted as emergency contraception? It's a six week wait usually here, and nowhere in the county offers it sooner.

RNBrie · 09/04/2016 19:43

No where in the country offers it sooner? My gp does coil fittings so as long as you can get a double appointment then she'll do it. I think I waited about 10 days. But she won't fit one without a negative pregnancy test first.

RNBrie · 09/04/2016 19:44

Sorry! You said county, not country, sorry!!

Fluffyemenent · 09/04/2016 19:49

Normally any family planning clinic would sort this out for you. Google family planning clinics local to you. Most have drop in sessions

TattyDevine · 09/04/2016 19:54

Does MAP really not work for this scenario? Geez. Yes, sperm can live 7 days, but more likely 5, and if you ovulate any time in the next few days technically you could get pregnant. And yes to STD tests unfortunately, though you'd be unlucky.

What a faff hey - you do your best and you still get clobbered, unfortunately it is a risk. Well done for using a condom though!

Shit happens, you'll probably be fine.

EarthboundMisfit · 09/04/2016 19:55

That's good. It's just our area then (I know through work that unless you are lucky enough to get a cancellation, it won't happen even at family planning centres). We are in the sticks though!

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 09/04/2016 20:02

The MAP is not 100% (nothing is!) but you did right in taking it. You could get the coil fitted for extra protection, but I've had a coil and it's not without it's problems.

Tbh, I think you're probably in the clear. You didn't do anything wrong - you used a condom on a drunken ONS. You then got the MAP, when condom failed (these things happen). I think you'll be OK - but if you're going to go into panic overdrive, go for the coil.

novemberchild · 09/04/2016 20:03

The Clearblue will not tell you anything useful now. I had a positive result one evening. Next morning, it was negative, but as I'm 3 months pg now, I know I must have been ovulating!

You need to go for the MAP unless you want to get pregnant.

lorelei9here · 09/04/2016 20:08

Bit stunned at the poster saying well done for using a condom.

Op you've taken the Pill, right? Not sure that having a coil fitted is worth the hassle if you're all right to have an abortion.

If it's a choice between a coil and a child, obvs the coil is preferable by a gazillion times, but can you really get it done that fast?

lorelei9here · 09/04/2016 20:09

*morrnjng after pill, sorry, autocorrect went for capital P there.

StupidGirl4568 · 09/04/2016 20:19

lorelei I have no idea, the pharmasist said contact my doctor on Monday, so I have no idea if they'd be able to do it there and then. I live in the sticks so we don't have a lot of GUM clinics local. Abortion is really not an option for me! I do want another, but right now our living situation is overcrowded and I've just got my career on track, so I would've liked to have waited another year or two at least. Plus the shame of my family finding out about my ONS!!!! Cringe.

wantmorenow · 09/04/2016 20:23

Personally I'd advise coil too - if you don't bleed within the prescribed time it allows (sorry don't know what that is off hand). I had a one time condom fail, took MAP and still got pg. It was a horrendous time for me as pregnancy certainly was not planned. Fingers crossed for you.

ILikeUranus · 09/04/2016 20:32

Well what he said about where you are in your cycle sounds pretty stupid tbh. You can literally only get pregnant when you're ovulating. At a different time of the month, the MAP will not be more effective - it just won't be doing anything at all! So what he's saying is, at this stage in your cycle, the MAP might actually be required to work! Obviously it usually would but not in 100% of cases, hence getting a coil fitted to make sure. Your local GP is unlikely to be able to fit you with one straight away (maybe not at all). Your best bet is an experienced dr or nurse at a sexual health clinic. Google opening times of your nearest one and get there ASAP.

SnapCackleFlop · 09/04/2016 20:34

My understanding is that MAP is most effective taken asap and effectiveness diminishes with time.

This is from Lloyds pharmacy website:

Levonelle is thought to prevent:

up to 95% of pregnancies if taken within 24 hours
up to 85% if taken within 48 hours
up to 58% if taken within 72 hours

You got it very quickly so you're in the 95% group 🙂

StupidGirl4568 · 09/04/2016 20:34

My last period started on the 25th of March and ended on 31st (longer than usual) it was also very light (I usually suffer from very heavy periods) so that's 8/9 days after. My cycle is usually longer than 28 days too, I can sometimes go closer to five weeks before my next period. Would that make a difference?

I'm starting to get mild cramps in my lower abdomen this evening. Not sure if that's a (positive?) side effect and the pill is working. Also, and this sounds ridiculous and gross, but what if I put some spermicide lube up there? Can't believe I just wrote that!

Dona- congrats. I have a 6yr old MAP failure.
