To think the aintree daily mail article is mean and fat shaming

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-3529746/Aintree-racegoers-stylish-display-Ladies-Day.html

I went to to Aintree last year and everyone was friendly. It seems mean to shame people because they wore a revealing outfit or is a bit heavy.

Just like every Mail article the paper does not directly insult but leaves it up to its readers to comment insults.

It's just another way to judge them because they've chosen to do something that some Mumsnetters wouldn't.

OK whatever Hmm. But perhaps someone on mn will remember our words and take a jacket next year. I doubt MN is a haven of people who know how to dress for the races tbh..... particularly as most of the time it really isn't a fashion show.

lemonade30 · 09/04/2016 13:14

Yeah cos that's why you're acting all 'cats arse in the middle of your face' to encourage them to take a coat next year. Course it is

You don't spend much time outside though, unless you're smoking.

I went to Ascot few years ago and we spent all the time inside as it pissed down all day.

I don't like the 'not dressing to flatter their size' comments. Isn't that fat shaming just put another way? You're not saying women should wear clothes in the correct size (which I agree with) but that, for example, a size 18/20 woman shouldn't wear a short skirt or a strapless dress even if it fits her perfectly.

Caprinihahahaha · 09/04/2016 13:16
Hmm

You know that between bars and balconies, catering tents and private boxes, a number of the women won't be outside much at all.

You understand that not everyone watches the races outside?

I don't really get it myself but courses are filled with people sitting and standing inside at the bars, placing their bets at the tote inside the grandstand.

Lots of people manage to barely step outside.

danadas · 09/04/2016 13:18

I go to Aintree every year and had a fab day yesterday.

Every single person has a smile on their faces and I would much rather be one of them than the miserable arses sneering.

Everyone at Aintree is lovely and friendly, I go racing a lot and can say that it is one of the most welcoming venues.

I never have to worry about ending up in the Daily Mail though, I go for the racing and so don't bother getting dressed up!

wasonthelist · 09/04/2016 13:20

Don't read the Mail or visit their website. They are beneath contempt.

AdrenalineFudge · 09/04/2016 13:21

I think the DM is possibly the most linked-to news source on MN, obviously I haven't thoroughly researched this but it does seem very often an OP will post a link to the DM and offer the usual "Sorry for the Daily Fail link" preamble.

tobysmum77 · 09/04/2016 13:22

The pictures I saw were ladies outside.

It's utterly hilarious that there seems to be an idea that going to the races is posh. It really really isn't. But then I've never been to Royal Ascot or anywhere like that.

lem73 · 09/04/2016 13:25

There's an article today about how drab Kate Middleton is. It's written by Sarah Vine who is the most appalling dresser. It takes a lot of arrogance to have a go at another woman on the front page of the paper when you look like that.

Itinerary · 09/04/2016 13:27

Wonder why they don't do a similar article on what the men look like?

Caprinihahahaha · 09/04/2016 13:28

You have to go outside to get inside.

And stepping out to watch a race and having your picture taken could constitute about 20 minutes of a whole day - exactly like going to and from a club or night out.

Racing isn't posh. It can be but I was taken racing when I was a child by my unemployed illiterate grandfather and have been the guest at a box several times.

All of which has nothing to do with the idea that the thing being laughed at about with the women's clothes is the weather.

Cutecat78 · 09/04/2016 13:30

There is a Suzy Vine article today just bitching about all the Duchess of Cambridge's outfits.

Just horrid.

tobysmum77 · 09/04/2016 13:33

Where have I said that I think it's funny? I don't think it's funny at all. Encouraging women to go to a sporting event in April unsuitably dressed by calling it 'ladies day' then people taking unflattering pictures isn't funny at all. The cold is another aspect on top, preventing them from enjoying it.

tobysmum77 · 09/04/2016 13:35

I dont get the obsession with Kate Middleton's outfits either. She looks nice enough, if she didn't dress conservatively they'd have a go at her for that also.

Caprinihahahaha · 09/04/2016 13:37

Where did I say you thought it was funny.

The article is laughing at the women. Of course it is. That's the whole point.
thats why there are three threads about it in active convos.

ManneryTowers · 09/04/2016 13:43

I think in all the pictures I've seen all the ladies a) look like they'd put a lot of effort in to how they looked and b) were having a great day out.

wasonthelist · 09/04/2016 13:46

I love Private Eye's parody of Sarah Vine - Sarah Vain.

jeremyisahunt · 09/04/2016 13:52

Don't worry, we're tough up North! Both physically and mentally!

We can take the cold and laugh at the bitchy comments!

lem73 · 09/04/2016 14:04

KM looks nice enough. And that's all she has to do. SV was having a go because she's not a 'style icon'. Ffs.

ssd · 09/04/2016 14:10

I agree with you op, the DM pictures of the women and their catty comments were out of order

though if it was me I'd be chuffed if the DM disapproved of me, thats a plus in my book

Narp · 09/04/2016 14:11

I think the headline the Mail really wanted to print was "look at the state of these (fat) slags" Not very subtle misogyny by the DM.

I'm most shocked by the litter. Oh the Humanity!

BestIsWest · 09/04/2016 14:17

I refuse to look at the DM this year but if it's anything like previous years YADNBU.

Grilledaubergines · 09/04/2016 16:15

And we can look forward to the DM nastiness again in a few months when the Derby is on. Bastards.

booklooker · 09/04/2016 17:16

I think in all the pictures I've seen all the ladies a) look like they'd put a lot of effort in to how they looked and b) were having a great day out.

Exactly, I do not understand the fuss. I see no 'fat shaming' in the article.

I spend a lot of time i York, I love race day, people get dressed up, but let their hair down.

kathkim · 11/04/2017 12:38

They do this every year, but the people in the photos seem to have having fun, which is more than can be said of the people reading the article about them.
