Apparently there are 40 signs of a supermum www.mirror.co.uk/lifestyle/family/secrets-super-mums-revealed-how-7693441

Aibu to wonder whether there are 40 signs of a super dad or as usual it's only mums who have to read this crap?!! Maybe I'm just peeved because I could tick off about ten! Grin

WhatKatyDidnt · 08/04/2016 08:52

Oh my actual god. What the hell are they thinking printing this shite?
Looking glamorous on the school run
And almost all of the rest too. And looking after the kids is just mum's responsibility, right? FFS!

UmbongoUnchained · 08/04/2016 08:54

I tick most of those off, do I get a medal?

Surely those things are just part of being a mum though? Don't think it makes you super mum!

ChristmasZombie · 08/04/2016 08:56

What is this "breakfast table" they speak of? We eat breakfast on the setee while watching CBeebies

oliviaclottedcream · 08/04/2016 08:57

Who actually reads and takes notice of this bollocks anyway? All it does is create anxiety and self doubt.

You're right Aristotles I read that it#s a total myth that women are better at multi-tasking. There's no reliable data to prove it at all... Yet it's spouted about like it's an established, scientific fact. In the most watched TED talk of all time - Ken Robinson's rant about education, he spouts off about it in that! Shocking really!

OohMavis · 08/04/2016 08:58

I do a lot of that. But isn't that what most parents do? Ensure their kids are polite (at least in public) and make an effort to read to them etc?

I'm not glamorous on the school run and I don't brag on facebook. And if clearing away the paperwork so the kids have somewhere to eat in the morning counts as 'setting the breakfast table' I totally do that.

What a load of shit.

AugustaFinkNottle · 08/04/2016 09:05

I would have thought the real supermum brings up her children to be capable of organising their own uniform.

Ludways · 08/04/2016 09:05

Ha ha ha, nothing mentioned about the happiness of the child, although I did only skim it. None of it sounded like me but I still ticked that I was a superman without a doubt. They don't get yo decide that, only my kids to!

Seeyounearertime · 08/04/2016 09:08

I know my dd is a couple years from school yet but how does one look "glam" for a school run? Mind you, I don't think dads tend to look glam, maybe dads are supposed to look oily? Or splattered with paint?

I don't think I'll continue trying to be a supermum, I'll go back to being a often shit, often good, fairly middling dad.

BastardGoDarkly · 08/04/2016 09:15

Yup, load of shit, but it's the mirror, so what more can you expect?

I never look glamorous, school run or otherwise, can't bake for shit, and laying the breakfast table is straight or of the 50s.

I'm not a supermum, but I'm a superb one Wink

LunaLunaLovegood · 08/04/2016 09:17

What a load of shite. I must stock up on wahoo chocolate pancakes Hmm

plantsitter · 08/04/2016 09:22

Divisive shite.

'52% of mums believe maternal perfection is achievable'. what??

Gobbolino6 · 08/04/2016 09:29

I got 37/40, because it missed 'doesn't shriek like a banshee fifteen times a day', 'doesn't have crippling social anxiety' and 'doesn't bribe children to achieve good behaviour'.

SweetieDrops · 08/04/2016 09:29

Lays the breakfast table the night before? My cat would take that as a challenge to see how many items of broken crockery I'd wake up to.

noblegiraffe · 08/04/2016 09:33

Supermum always cooks from scratch, except for pancakes, when she reaches for Wahoo chocolate pancakes. Because pancakes are hard to make.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 08/04/2016 09:33

Dh and I do most of this between us (not the pta or looking glamorous) - does that mean we are supermum and dad or (more likely) it only counts if the woman does it all by herself?!

I disagree it's about not working though. I am a sahm now but I worked until dc3 was born and most of the habits of organisation on the list, we got into then because we had to - eg weekly menu planning because we really did only get time to go shopping once a week, systems for dealing with school stuff because there wasn't time to be messing around in the mornings or popping into school to drop off forgotten pe kit.

Fairenuff · 08/04/2016 09:42

I got lots of those. I don't think they are that 'super'. Some of them are just basic care.

Has school uniform washed and ironed for Monday morning
Always makes sure the children look clean and presentable
Always has the correct school uniform ready
Regularly checks the kids' hair for nits and lice
Ensures children have their hair cut regularly
Always remembers hats, scarves and gloves in the winter

I'm surprised there isn't one about ensuring teeth are brushed and regular dentist appointments too.

Others are just basic 'being a responsible adult' stuff.

Never arrives late for school drop off or pick up
Makes sure the kids' homework is done
Gets children to always say please and thank you
Reads to the children every night
Gets the children to bed on time
Disciplines children when necessary
Knows when a hug is required
Allows children help with the cooking
Gets children to behave well in restaurants
Has a First Aid kit at home
Let's their friends come over to the house
Gets everyone out of the door on time
Never forgets to make packed lunches and snack boxes

I mean, who the hell doesn't make a packed lunch for their school child? What do they expect them to do at lunchtime when everyone else is eating Confused

Some of the others people will often do if they have the time/freedom from younger siblings; not everyone can even if they wanted to.

Is on the PTA
Helps out at school discos and fetes
Bakes cakes with their children
Picks up other people's kids from school if asked

The biggest problem is that it is all aimed at women and implies that anyone not doing everything on the list is a failure. So it's a load of tosh anyway Grin

MartinaJ · 08/04/2016 09:44

If you iron a uniform, it doesn't make you a Supermum, it makes you very silly. Or you haven't seen what your dear darling is up to during their breaks.

HPsauciness · 08/04/2016 09:49

The most 'supermum' I know is super because she is very high achieving, works in a socially important area and flies around the world to change it whilst being a very loving and fun mum, and a good friend as well.

Now that's super.

This list is not so super.

RhombusRiley · 08/04/2016 09:50

Shall we do our own?

  1. Insists other half do fair share of chores and childcare.
  2. Instills in children that you do not need to be perfect to be loved.
HowBadIsThisPlease · 08/04/2016 09:52

this is the most non-thing ever. I can't believe that national newspapers have got the point that they a. product shit like this and b. get away with it. It's depressing.

Everything on that list is either basic, or stupid and pointless, or in some cases, depending on how you read it, both / either.

Get them to school and pick them up again - I presume getting someone else to do this also counts? - so that's pretty basic isn't it

Or stupid and pointless (being the person who is present at the school pick up and drop off 100% of the time (= never having a job) - even if you have a partner, even if the children have grandparents or friends or relatives or childminders who could do this perfectly well) - nobody needs to do this. Nobody needs to be the only individual who EVER does the school run, unless they have no friends, no relatives, no partner, and have ONLY JUST moved house and don't know anyone yet. Stupid and pointless

(looking glam on the school run and chatting shit about your darlings on fb count as stupid and pointless too)

Kennington · 08/04/2016 09:53

I do 3 things on this, that's it!
I accept my mediocrity. Or worse.
Good grief: post on Facebook. Really?

HowBadIsThisPlease · 08/04/2016 09:53

Ooh Rhombus I like how you think.

  1. Encourage your children, by modelling it, to get on with stuff even if everything isn't perfect, there is a way to make it work and in any given situation you can get a good result by focusing on what actually matters.
Claraoswald36 · 08/04/2016 09:54

I got 30 out of 40 but I fucking hate Facebook and it's a complete non achievement. I'm a working lone parent as well. I don't think the list is especially aspiration. Lots are basic expectations

EponasWildDaughter · 08/04/2016 09:58

What a load of shite.

i scored 27 Grin

witsender · 08/04/2016 09:59

I'm a good mum. I don't iron, didn't enforce homework (we HE now) and can't get my daughter to brush her hair. Hey ho, it's her hair!
