To not want to go to Las Vegas?

gBean · 07/04/2016 20:12

H and I are hoping to get away next year, just the two of us. I'm not massively well travelled, he is.

He really wants to go to Vegas and I just don't see the appeal. I don't like casinos. I like beaches and sightseeing and shopping. Would love to visit Venice, Portugal, Copenhagen but nothing about Vegas exites me.

AIBU or a bit daft?

My DP went for work last year and hated it - and he normally quite likes trashy things. YANBU.

LittleLionMansMummy · 08/04/2016 14:50

Yanbu. Dsis and bil got married there are were all "oh you absolutely must visit - you'd love it!" Um, no I don't and no I wouldn't. That's not me being closed minded, that's me knowing categorically that it epitomises everything I despise.

I'm going to Vegas for 3 nights (following on from 6 nights in San Francisco and the surrounding area). I can't wait! But I do love cocktails and a flutter. And we have tickets to see Lionel Ritchie in concert! Grin

Really interesting thread thanks all! Going to research a lot of the stuff mentioned. Certainly won't be forced into going

Vegas is amazing - and you don't have to gamble - we went and didn't. There's plenty to do, amazing pools lots of theatres if you like stages shows, great restaurants. Something for everyone!

DontDeadOpenInside · 10/04/2016 08:30

My brother is getting married in Vegas next year. At first I was like 'eurgh, Vegas..' I'm not into gambling and all that but having spoken to my mum who has been many times she assures me there's much more to it than that. Having looked at our options I'm actually really looking forward to it now. I cannot wait to go to the Grand Canyon dh thinks were going on the skywalk.. he can piss off I want to see Elton, Britney a magic show and loads of other things and the only time I will be entering a casino is to walk through it.

saltlakecity · 10/04/2016 09:18

I love Vegas. I'm a country girl but I have to say I feel a touch of excitement when going to Vegas. I love the hotels, the lights, the bustle, the food, the shows, the things to do. I don't gamble but loved wandering through the casinos. It's everything I'm against but I loved it anyway!

Mari50 · 10/04/2016 09:48

i think Vegas is a hell hole - I got married there and it depressed the fuck out of me when I was there. Sleazy on so many levels. That said there are some great sight round about so a three day stay in Vegas could be included in a great holiday to the US. Compromise?

saltlakecity · 10/04/2016 10:01

Mari - why did you get married there?

ImogenTubbs · 10/04/2016 10:11

We did the old Pacific Coast highway trip for two weeks. San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Big Sur, LA and then Vegas for three night. Vegas was mental, but lots of fun if you suspend your sense of taste / style / judgement for a few days. We didn't gamble, but took a helicopter ride, saw Tom Jones perform in our hotel (hilarious) and lazed by amazing pools. Would have been deathly dull if I'd been stuck in casinos for two weeks!

EachandEveryone · 10/04/2016 12:39

There's five of us going in November. It wasn't the top of my list I'd rather go to New Orleons for fun. However, the more I'm looking into it the more excited I'm getting. I can't wait to drive out to a Death Valley and the shopping outlets. I'm looking forward to the off strip diners for breakfast, the lights of Fremont Street and the Font a Tell MaMa piano bar. I want to go to the Beatles Circ and see some proper American Stand Up. We may eat at Nobu as its miles cheaper than the UK or we may just eat out of a food truck. I'm looking forward to getting dressed up to go out for the night. As much as I love New York you are always too knackered to do that.

EachandEveryone · 10/04/2016 12:40

Plus they have a Whole Foods and I could spend all morning in there.

Mari50 · 10/04/2016 14:24

I got married there cause I'd never been and thought it would be cool. We did have two weeks in a much nicer place after so it was great wedding/honeymoon but Vegas was desperate and sad and sleazy all at once.

gBean · 11/04/2016 10:48

I'm actually coming round to the idea ...

If you do decide to go, stay in one of the big hotels, not a motel/TravelLodge type place. The big hotels have fantastic sound proofing so you can't hear the slots when you're in the room.

Two of my friends went and where they stayed, they could hear them, which annoyed them so much they've never been again.

WeMustSurelyBeLearning · 11/04/2016 16:31

In the big hotels, the rooms are usually in a seperate towers away from the casino floor. It's why it takes so bloody long to get to your room! I'd rather that though than hear the noise of slot machines ringing. Can't imagine how annoying that would be.

EachandEveryone · 11/04/2016 17:01

Look at M Signature Suites they are very reasonable and like self contained apartments.

CalicoBlue · 11/04/2016 19:42

We told the check in guy at The Bellagio that we were there to get married, we got a free upgrade to a fountain view room.

It was the size of everything that amazed me. The hotels have 35 floors and over 3000 rooms. The casino's seemed to go on forever. When I told my DD that the hotel was as big as Blue Water shopping centre, she did not believe me.

Ebb · 11/04/2016 20:00

We went to Vegas. Flew in to San Francisco, spent a few days there then drove to Vegas via Yosemite and Death Valley. Then flew out of Vegas. Had a great time. Vegas is OK for a couple of days. Great for people watching. Grin

bearbehind · 11/04/2016 20:05

The big hotels have fantastic sound proofing so you can't hear the slots when you're in the room.

The slot machines ringing isn't a problem anymore- there's no coins dropping- the machines just issue a voucher when you cash out- there's no 'theatre' to getting a big win anymore.

bearbehind · 11/04/2016 20:07

They do still play music though.

Ebb · 11/04/2016 20:16

We stayed in a small hotel called Bills but a quick look on Google seems to show that it's now called The Cromwell. It's only got 188 rooms so tiny in comparison to a lot but very quick to get out and we could see The Parisian and The Bellagio from our room so great location. A Cirque de soleil show is a must. The gondola rides at the Venitician are a waste of money. The outside one does not go inside and vise versa. Very disappointing! Grin

EachandEveryone · 11/04/2016 20:25

My friend got back yesterday and said she spent four nights going out of Fremont street much cheaper and better people watching then the strip

Voteforpedr0 · 11/04/2016 20:36

Vegas people go to Vegas, Dubai people go to Dubai and other people go and see the world. Ex colleagues used to go to the two named places above and talk about them as if they were heaven on earth but my idea of hell. Yanbu

WaitrosePigeon · 11/04/2016 20:52

There are some really good places to eat in Vegas but other than that it's absolute bollocks.
