To put a bin next to the toilet.

This makes me irrationally angry: My job involves going to people's houses. Normally I will be with them between a and 4 hours, so occasionally I will have to use their toilet.
Today I'm on my period and have quite heavy flow. I was on a longer job (3hrs) and bled through my tampon. I discovered that there was no von in the bathroom. Just to be clear. I try to avoid having to change my tampon in client's houses by changing in public loos, McDonald's or Starbucks and carry scented plastic bags with me tobwrap the offender in when I have to do it at someone's house.
So, anyway, i was in the very awkward position of having a soaked tampon and no way of getting rid of it. I was in charge of a very young child - so no way of nipping out to the bins or a pub (to use the loo) and ended up stemming the flow with toilet paper and going back to working with their dc for another hour.
I will not flush a tampon down the loo because I don't want to block the clients toilet.

So, aibu to ask you all to provide a bin for female visitors?

Grin at Sparkling. I was only saying what I don't have in my bathroom or put in my bin.

someonestolemynick · 06/04/2016 21:46

Witsender, I'm unsqueamish about tampons full stop.
I wrap tampons in scented bags in a clients house because I'm happy to adjust to that level of squeamishness. I don't fancy having it in my handbag and forget about it until I can smell it and just want to get back to my job without having to locate a bin. It's easiest for me to stem the flow with loo roll until I can get to a public loo.

Jesus Christ, ' disgusting and shameful '? Someone has some issues! You're all welcome to put whatever you like in my bathroom bin, I won't be putting my hand in for a rummage. Those without bathroom bins- what do you do with dental floss? Cotton wool? Panty liners???

hollinhurst84 · 06/04/2016 21:47

strawberry - I managed to partially expel my copper coil with a mooncup by getting the strings stuck Blush
The second time they cut the strings v v short and I can use a mooncup no problem

someonestolemynick · 06/04/2016 21:49

Strawberry, i looked into mooncup prompted by mn and read somewhere that you can accidently pull out of dislocate the coil with the mooncup so I decided I wouldn't risk it.

Pipbin · 06/04/2016 21:49

I don't have a bin as there isn't room for one.
I use reusable sanitary products and everything else either goes in the bedroom bin or the recycling bin.

RudeElf · 06/04/2016 21:49

why is rude elf shouting?

Zoe obviously cant hear me at normal volume.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 06/04/2016 21:50

strawberry I also read somewhere that they are contraindicated because of potential suction issues.

I bought one anyway. Didn't like it.

One slightly used Mooncup going free Grin

I am really Confused about all those people saying they wouldn't like a tampon being disposed of in their bin. Do you rummage through your bins before putting them in the wheely or do you just not have an inner bag? And if the offending tampon is wrapped in a bag, why does it matter?

I'm with you OP. My mum wouldn't and still won't have a bin in the bathroom. It was mortifying as an 11 year old having to take used sanitary wear downstairs to the kitchen bin.

StealthPolarBear · 06/04/2016 21:50

I cam only assume some people occasionally serve soup in their bathroom bins...

TypicallyEnglishMustard · 06/04/2016 21:50

That's what I said, pollylovespie! Where does everybody out used make-up wipes, dental floss, Q-tips??

BitchPeas · 06/04/2016 21:51

Zoe

HOW do you know someone has never put a tampon in your bin?? HOW??

And

What do you do with your sanitary towels/tampons?

monkeysox · 06/04/2016 21:51

Please don't flush tampons. Not every home has access directly to the main drains system. Very expensive to get pumps fixed. Grim.
We always had a bathroom bin when I was young and I have them in my toilets too.

StealthPolarBear · 06/04/2016 21:55

When did they start being called q tips rather than cotton buds?

Youarentkiddingme · 06/04/2016 21:56

If actually see where the OP is coming from. If she's visiting clients houses ass part of her employment then I think it's reasonable to expect facilities for her to use. People working in the community really shouldn't have to visit a maccy d's to just do what is a normal bodily function.

I do actually have a bin in my bathroom. It's actually a large one! I have just 2 bins in the house - kitchen and bathroom as each are opposite ends.

I've also always flushed tampons but Solomny declare to MN that I will not do so from now on - and add nappy bags to my shopping list!

whois · 06/04/2016 21:56

But those who are (rightly) not squeamish about their used tampons going in someone else's bin, why would you be squeamish about taking it to another bin? Or putting it in your bag?

Because I don't carry plastic bags. Public toilets and at work all have proper sanitary bins so no need for bags. If at a friends I would put in the new tampons wrapper and then wrap in toilet roll and go in the bin, but I wouldn't fancy putting the tampon in my bag without a sealed plastic bag in case it squishes blood out onto my other bag times.

AuntieMaggie · 06/04/2016 21:56

vintage I have seen thousands of tampons on beaches and in rivers and the harm they can do to marine wildlife etc. and when they get cleaned up they get taken to landfill so you might as well send it there in the first place (unless you use reuseables).

Regardless of how much money you pay in tax/bills it's not ok to just flush them - that's like throwing your litter on the street and saying it's ok because your tax pays for it to be cleaned up.

What is with this country and the "I pay for it so I'll do what I like and bugger the consequences" attitude?

TypicallyEnglishMustard · 06/04/2016 21:57

I think of cotton buds as being like those bigger globs of cotton. So I personally use Q-tips or ear buds to differentiate.

MTPurse · 06/04/2016 22:04

I'm with you op, I have bins in all my toilets and they are there for people to use! I would be mortified if someone visiting had to carry around a used tampon or pad in their pocket or handbag, I would not expect a guest to use kitchen bin either.

My dd is 14 and she will not sleepover at any of her friends houses unless she has visited first and checked they have a bathroom bin.

LogicalThinking · 06/04/2016 22:12

I almost never use bin liners and I am very strict on recycling. I have no need for a bathroom bin. I have never needed to use anyone else's bathroom bin.
I use a mooncup these days but before then I used tampons and washable pads. I had a little lined zipped purse where I stored my supplies - 2 compartments for used and clean. So I always took care of my own things.

I am not going to buy bags to dispose of your sanitary items because you don't want to buy your own. If you have a bag to put it in then it's easy to dispose of in any bin. I have no problem with you using the general waste bin in my utility room.

Pipbin · 06/04/2016 22:14

where does everybody out used make-up wipes, dental floss, Q-tips??

Don't use make up wipes, I use a flannel and make up remover.
Dental floss goes in the bedroom bin.
I don't use Q-tips as I'm not American cotton wool buds.

fusionconfusion · 06/04/2016 22:16

As someone I stayed in a house with once had a total shitfit about a guest leaving a sanitary towel (wrapped in tissue) in the bin in the bathroom, I would never ever ever leave a sanitary towel in the bin in someone else's bathroom but happily wrap and carry away with me.

LogicalThinking · 06/04/2016 22:16

My dd is 14 and she will not sleepover at any of her friends houses unless she has visited first and checked they have a bathroom bin.
I don't understand why she would let something like that have an effect on what she wants to do.

Vintage45 · 06/04/2016 22:16

The I pay for it Maggie literally means that. I do. Ive also never seen a job lot of tampons on beaches. Why people tend to exaggerate on here is probably because they can.

fusionconfusion · 06/04/2016 22:17

"If she's visiting clients houses as part of her employment then I think it's reasonable to expect facilities for her to use."

We're usually there to serve them, they're not there for our comfort.

KenAdams · 06/04/2016 22:22

*I can't believe there are women on here who wouldn't allow another woman a corner of a bag-lined bin for used sanitary products but would rather they carried the used product around with them until they left the house.

That's disgusting*

Couldn't agree more. I don't touch anything in my bathroom bin so I'd rather someone used it than have to carry a soiled tampon around with them. This thread is mad.
