To think if you don't use your f*cking indicators, you shouldn't be allowed on the road??

It's getting unbearable where I live in London.
Today, trying to cross a crossroads with a buggy and I swear 1/4 of the drivers pulling out of the road opposite me didn't bother indicating before turning left. They are clearly expecting other people to psychically know whether they are turning or going straight on.
DP, who is a very careful cyclist, nearly got knocked off his bike today by an uber driver pulling out without indicating, and then swearing at him (DP).

THE HIGHWAY CODE STATES THAT YOU HAVE TO INDICATE BEFORE UNDERTAKING A MANOEUVRE! Do people not understand this anymore??? Clearly they don't in SE London.

I feel sorry for them. They've bought these lovely expensive cars, filled in all the paperwork at the car showroom or done the deal with the previous owner, proudly get the keys and hop in to drive their shiny new purchase home...only to find that the bastard seller has ripped them off and the indicators don't work.

Personally I've always been very lucky and the indicators have always worked on all of my cars, but I do appreciate how rare that seems to be and so feel very blessed and privileged.

I mean, that must be it, yes?

PunkrockerGirl · 05/04/2016 06:18

YANBU. Indicators are clearly an optional extra on a lot of cars round here. Confused

SpaghettiMeatballs · 05/04/2016 06:33

YANBU although more annoying is when people indicate incorrectly.

I live off a road that is the 'small' turn off on a large roundabout. 9 out of 10 drivers just ignore it and indicate left as though they are going to turn into my road when they actually want the next exit.

I have to warn visitors when they leave 'most people who use the roundabout are idiots and when they indicate left you can't go as they actually want the next exit'.

Sometimesithinkimbonkers · 05/04/2016 06:34

I have got out at a car park and told a woman her indicators were broken .... She told me to fuck off!!!
Very rude as they were defiantly broken!

magimedi · 05/04/2016 06:36

YANBU.

And, on the rare occasion when they do indicate, I expect they wonder why their windscreen wipers are not working.

Ifailed · 05/04/2016 06:40

most people round here can't use their indicators as they only have one hand on the steering wheel, the other holds their phone.

roundtable · 05/04/2016 06:49

I was taught it was only mini roundabouts that you don't indicate if you're going straight over. Other roundabouts you indicate your exit.

Yanbu op, it's so dangerous. If a car is waiting at a junction and not using their indicators, I won't let them out.

Kelandry · 05/04/2016 06:55

Last time this was asked, swear a bunch of mumsnet terms said you should be able to tell which way they are going from the cars trajectory and where the driver is looking, and that they didn't indicate. Where are they?

AuntieStella · 05/04/2016 06:57

"Lots of drivers seem to believe that if there is not another driver in their sight it's fine to not indicate, like pedestrians and cyclists don't need to be know what their next move will be! So irritating and potentially dangerous"

Precisely.

And so much more politely put that I might have managed.

There are road users other than card, and they all need to know about impending manoeuvres.

Sparklingbrook · 05/04/2016 06:58

YY Kelandry I was wondering where they were. Arriving to explain why indicating was unnecessary.

PageStillNotFound404 · 05/04/2016 07:02

a bunch of mumsnet terms said you should be able to tell which way they are going from the cars trajectory and where the driver is looking

If that last bit is true then half the muppet drivers round here appear to be trying to drive into their own glovebox.

DrDreReturns · 05/04/2016 07:04

I never understand people who don't indicate. To me it's something automatic, it doesn't exactly require much effort does it?

TheCrumpettyTree · 05/04/2016 07:10

Also indicating and just pulling out is just as bad. Just because you're indicating doesn't give you the right to pull out.

PotatoesPastaAndBread · 05/04/2016 07:10

YANBU

And also that you should indicate to tell people what you are going to do, not indicate to show what you have already started doing.

I'm a cyclist and the number of buses that pull out while I'm overtaking and only start indicating when I'm halfway along the length of the bus is ridiculous.

LittleGreyBear · 05/04/2016 07:21

YANBU. Nothing more annoying than people not indicating. Really winds me up!!

CoraPirbright · 05/04/2016 07:24

YADNBU! There is a special circle of hell reserved for people who don't indicate! It's just so bloody arrogant. Like they think their time is so much more important than mine so they will go on their merry way whilst I have to sit there like a lemon just waiting for them to perform their manoeuvre because I am not a mind reader. Why can't the police use those speed camera vans to catch these fuckers and fine them? They would make a fortune!

JennyOnAPlate · 05/04/2016 07:24

Yanbu. There are a lot of hideous roundabouts within a few miles of my house (many exits, many lanes, very fast) and no one indicates. It's bloody dangerous.

megletthesecond · 05/04/2016 07:27

Yanbu.

But in advanced driving you are taught that you don't always have to indicate. If there are no other vehicles, cyclists or pedestrians around to indicate to then don't indicate, however in most places there is always someone around. If you indicate out of habit it shows you aren't paying attention to everything going on. My instructor used to ask me who I was indicating to in the middle of nowhere.

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 05/04/2016 07:27

YANBU. I've been known to shout 'they're fitted as standard'. Dd & I were almost run over the other week by a driver who wasn't indicating & had run a red light!

MrsMook · 05/04/2016 07:29

A few days ago I saw a near miss between two German cars of the same model. Car A was driving too fast for the tight bends at the junction. Car B slightly ahead in the lane to the right changed its mind abruptly and cut to the left just in front of car A without indicating. A decent driver of car A should have been going slower as the lanes are badly signed and people do make abrupt decisions there.

I did smirk at the pair of them both conforming to cliché.

MrsJamin · 05/04/2016 07:32

Yanbu. The one that's the most annoying is brake brake brake signal turn. Angry This and pedestrians randomly crossing roads in front of you make me the most angry when in the car. I live in quite a dense area where there are lots of people assuming that because you're going 25mph and there's a bus on the other side of the road that they can just walk in front of you and expect you to stop.

Higge · 05/04/2016 07:32

I wish cyclists would use arm signals.

roundtable · 05/04/2016 07:36

There's a car in my town that I've witnessed and another family member on a separate occasion, that when turning right stays on the left hand side and doesn't indicate. A car will drive to the right of it, indicating to go right and when the road is clear, both cars end up turning right at the same time. Shock

I hope it's the same car, otherwise there's two equally dangerous drivers.

BippityBoppityBullshit · 05/04/2016 07:42

YANBU. Using then incorrectly is a nightmare too. I had what uld have been a near miss yesterday when a driver came careering over a roundabout indicating left (he would have been going straight on if he had taken the exit he was indicating for) but something told me he wasn't quite ready to leave the roundabout. Sure enough he continued flying round and was actually turning right.

I also get the rage at people who don't notice their indicators are still going after they have made their maneuver. So dangerous on motorways and busy roads!

Mousefinkle · 05/04/2016 07:42

Yanbu, at all.

I've been muttering INDICATORS at drivers since I was a child. There's a a big roundabout near where I live with a lot of different junctions, it's an utter nightmare to cross because people seem to forget indicators exist. A good 60% don't bother, especially in the morning when it's the busiest. It's lethal.
