A friend has just posted this 'My doctor asked if any family members suffered from mental illness. I said "no, we all seem to enjoy it"

AIBU to be offended by it? I wouldn't mind so much but she's a GP!

OP posts:
WellErrr · 03/04/2016 12:11

My first thought was 'ignorance but unintended.'

But a GP!??? What a fuckwit.

molyholy · 03/04/2016 12:11

Yes. Yab abit u. It is obviously a joke.

PPie10 · 03/04/2016 12:13

Just unfollow her.

JuxtapositionRecords · 03/04/2016 12:13

Well it's clearly sarcastic. Not sure what there is to be offended about?

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 03/04/2016 12:15

Well it's clearly sarcastic. Not sure what there is to be offended about?

This, and I say that as someone who suffered years of clinical depression in her late teens/early 20s

notabee · 03/04/2016 12:15

A lot of people post possibly offensive 'jokes' on fb. If she posts lots perhaps simply unfollow her.
It is offensive, mh isn't a joke but she clearly just hasn't thought.

Samcro · 03/04/2016 12:16

well do what i did the other day when someone used the R word

de friend and BLOCK

WorraLiberty · 03/04/2016 12:18

Well I laughed Grin

You can be offended by what you want to be fair, because everyone is different and whether MH have touched their lives in some way or not, some will find it funny and some won't.

sallysparrow157 · 03/04/2016 12:21

Does she or any of her relatives have a mental illness? If that's the case you could read it as a bit of a 'fuck you' to the phrase 'suffering from a mental illness' - just cause someone is or has been mentally ill doesn't mean they are suffering all the time...

emwithme · 03/04/2016 12:23

That makes me laugh.

I have a diagnosis of bipolar disorder (with mixed-hypomanic states but tending towards depression) and generalised anxiety disorder.

WorraLiberty · 03/04/2016 12:24

It's just a different take on an incredibly old joke.

Doctor: "Do you suffer from PMT"?

Patient: "No, but my husband does".

The internet has literally millions and millions of jokes on it. Some will be offensive to some and not to others.

It's the way it's always been, even before the internet because people laugh at different things.

findingmyfeet12 · 03/04/2016 12:25

It's funny (lots of mental health issues in my immediate family).

Thisismyalias · 03/04/2016 12:25

Well as a suffer of mental illness for 10 years + including suicide attempts, I found it funny.

You found offence at it, and that's your perogative. There's a little arrow at the top right corner, click it and hide the post.

tellmemore1982 · 03/04/2016 12:28

I think that's quite funny actually, I say that as someone who is very close to people who have / had mh problems. I think you're being a bit sensitive about it tbh so yabu.

SeaMagic · 03/04/2016 12:29

I don't think it's offensive...

I read it to be a sarcastic retort to the statement that someone is 'suffering' from a mental illness.

As far as a I understand those with a diagnosed mental illness are not always suffering. I believe that some aspects can even be 'enjoyable' in terms of increased energy and creativity when in the manic phase of bipolar disorder [as reported by Stephen Fry and others who have written about their experience].

VeryBitchyRestingFace · 03/04/2016 12:29

Well, I sniggered. And yes, there is mental illness in my family. Blush

PPie10 · 03/04/2016 12:29

You know you don't have to look for offense in everything.

herecomethepotatoes · 03/04/2016 12:35

Some people love to be offended / annoyed.

GraysAnalogy · 03/04/2016 12:37

Oh for gods sake it's just a joke. I'm one of the unlucky sods who have severe mental health problems at times but I see the funny side.

DrSeuss · 03/04/2016 12:40

Currently taking anti Ds for the third time. Still laughed. If you can't laugh at MH a bit even as you feel its effects, you are really screwed IMHO!

BagpussOhhearwhatISing · 03/04/2016 12:40

It's funny..and I say this as a parent of a DC with serious psychiatric problems. Sometimes black humour is the only thing that gets you through.
Having said that, I can see why it would be upsetting to some, so I would do as others have suggested, hide the post, or block the poster.

acasualobserver · 03/04/2016 12:41

A lot of jokes might be considered in rather poor taste. That doesn't stop them being funny.

Ifailed · 03/04/2016 12:50

Sorry, but I laughed. With all 3 of my DP's siblings committing suicide, sometimes laughter is the only way to deal with things.
However, if you find it offensive, block and move on.

findingmyfeet12 · 03/04/2016 12:52

Ifailed your poor dp. How dreadful Flowers

FarrowandBallAche · 03/04/2016 12:53
