A friend has just posted this 'My doctor asked if any family members suffered from mental illness. I said "no, we all seem to enjoy it"

AIBU to be offended by it? I wouldn't mind so much but she's a GP!

Ifailed that's awful :(

I thought it was funny, but MN isn't the best place to discuss it - however its nice to see those who have posted so far have found it funny.

As they say "laughter is the best medicine"!

Biscetti · 03/04/2016 12:58

It's a joke ffs. Are GPs not allowed humour well. It's not remotely poor taste.

IamCarcass · 03/04/2016 12:59

Oh dear I laughed, have had depression. And I can imagine a few of my friends and family with depression (and dry humour) finding it amusing too! It's just a play on words really.

AyeAmarok · 03/04/2016 13:01

I found it funny too.

Lighten up OP!

IoraRua · 03/04/2016 13:02
Grin I thought it was funny, and I've dealt with mental illness. It's just a joke. You don't know her/her family experience with mental illness.
bolleauxnouveau · 03/04/2016 13:06

I laughed. My bad.

LagunaBubbles · 03/04/2016 13:09

I'm a Psychiatric Nurse and I laughed.

LifeCrossRoad · 03/04/2016 13:15

I laughed. Mental health issues here

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 03/04/2016 13:15

A lot of the medical profession develop a dark sense of humour to make the God awful things they witness more bearable.

MammaTJ · 03/04/2016 13:17

My friend who has bipolar posted this.

It's funny!

LifeCrossRoad · 03/04/2016 13:19

What ilost said

mia1977 · 03/04/2016 13:22

As a sufferer of mental health issues, I was not offended and found it quite funny. Move on and forget it.

Pippa12 · 03/04/2016 13:24

It made me laugh out loud.

fusionconfusion · 03/04/2016 13:27

She might have a mh issue herself, you know. A load of GPs do - I've been doing some research on this and medical staff are prone to depersonalisation, derealisation, depression, suicidal ideation etc than a variety of other professional groups.

Though I know sometimes memes can sting. I've just made a post about one my mother posted (Grandchildren are the reward for not strangling your teenagers) - which is a bit mean considering she was quite violent at times and very neglectful/barely there for my whole teenage years when I was having a tough, tough time. I know she just found it "funny" but, man, take some perspective.

I don't find your GP person's meme offensive but it does amaze me the stuff people post without considering how it will look to other people!

fusionconfusion · 03/04/2016 13:27

*more prone

MakeItRain · 03/04/2016 13:30

I don't find that offensive. Mh issues in my family too.

MrsOs · 03/04/2016 13:38

its a joke.. My sister gave me a magnet once that said something about pretending we are all normal...

girlinacoma · 03/04/2016 13:39

It's funny, I like it!

There's a dark humour to it which I appreciate.

Why is her profession as a GP relevant? You have no fucking idea what she might be going through in her personal life.

I'm also curious as to what happens when someone is offended (having never been offended in my entire life).

Is there a physical consequence that I should be aware of? Will I spontaneously combust? Perhaps my head explodes?

WastingTime123 · 03/04/2016 13:41

A bit crass for a GP.

Movingonmymind · 03/04/2016 13:46

She's posting to friends, not in her professional capacity (which would have been highly inappropriate) so fair enough. It's a joke and as others have said, she's likely to have posted it because it hit home in some way- probably been affected directly or indirectly via family members with MH issues, most of us are.

TeacupsandFigs · 03/04/2016 13:48

Well maybe being offended is different if you are having a crap time with m/h issues. Maybe you see something like the post I mentioned and then feel like you should pull yourself together and stop feeling like crap because, after all, having m/h problems is fucking hilarious.

DramaQueenofHighCs · 03/04/2016 13:48

My family (including myself) have a history of depression. But we are also pretty madcap. Every single one of my family who is on Facebook has shared this post at some point. YABU - for flip sake are we allowed to laugh at nothing nowadays!!

Boomingmarvellous · 03/04/2016 13:50

It's just a joke that has been doing the rounds for years.

It wouldn't bother me personally but I can see it would if you were directly affected by mental illness.

Boomingmarvellous · 03/04/2016 13:52

But you abu because you can't expect everyone in the world to stop laughing just because you find something upsetting. No one would ever speak about anything.
