Is £200 for a kitchen bin fucking ridiculous?

So we've just had a new kitchen fitted, which we saved for years to buy. Our black plastic swing top bin (B&Q, £21.99 - I promise this is relevant later) has had a broken bit for the past 8 years or so, so the lid no longer fits snugly. It's also very ugly, although I guess that's subjective.

I thought I'd like to get one of those brabantia touch bins as they look nice but instead I was inexorably drawn towards this: www.johnlewis.com/joseph-joseph-intelligent-waste-separation-recycling-totem-bin-60l/p1897300?colour=Stone

DH didn't want any part in bin discussions. I did try to get him enthused about bin choice, but he wasn't really biting so in the end I proposed that I should have Absolute Bin Autonomy and he acquiesced. With my Absolute Bin Autonomy I purchased the above bin using the joint account.

DH now says that £200 for a bin is a "fucking waste of money" given the longevity and cost of our previous bin, and I'll need to repay him in favours involving vats of lube and marmosets. It may have been marmalade. (He is actually joking, for anyone who may take this literally.)

To me, Absolute Bin Autonomy allows me to choose the bin of my dreams. I admit that £200 is a fucking ridiculous price for a bin, but the autonomy principle stands, no? AIBU?

The council takes away food waste ( and indeed conducts random inspections of general waste bags to ensure there's no food inside (or glass, metal, paper, card or recyclable plastics). So being able to sort in the kitchen as I bin things is a real plus for me.

Council take it away here. It goes in the big caddy. Our bins are complex!

One for kitchen bin (every other week)
Garden bin (pay extra) (every other week with above)
Card and plastics bin (intervening week)
Tin and bottle box weekly
Paper bag (weekly)
Food caddy (weekly)

BeaufortBelle · 03/04/2016 07:20

We get the random inspections too and some people's bins have had a naughty sticker.

FeelingSmurfy · 03/04/2016 07:55

We have same bins as Beau but no charge for green bin and I don't think they check the bins

Having just looked at the website meat and bones, bits of old cheese can go in the food wast caddy too.

We get notes through our doors threatening to never remove rubbish again if they find so much as a pea in the wrong bin! We live in flats so all rubbish goes in communal various bins so we all get these letters every time one person accidentally leaves something

DirtyHarrietOnABike · 03/04/2016 09:25

It's not a waste of money if you can afford it. This bin though looks rather small... (just saying Wink)

mellysam · 03/04/2016 09:42

Hi kipper, enjoy your bin, we have the same one Smile
(We don't bother with the joseph joseph bin liners though just normal blank bags)

kippersyllabub · 03/04/2016 12:20

OMG. My bin comes with a welcome pack. An actual set of instructions for using a binShock

Haha! Love it! Enjoy!

After reading this thread, I've had an unusual, bordering on unhealthy interest in bins while shopping this weekend.

I have a perfectly good Brabanta one, and really don't need a bin. But I am not tempted by the Joseph bin as I haven't seen a better one while shopping.

londonrach · 03/04/2016 20:39

Kippers...🙈. I think you need to post the first page...what can possibly be in the welcome booklet...

kippersyllabub · 03/04/2016 21:15

I'm posting two photos to illustrate the contrast between the bin instructions and what it actually looks like.

DH, who now takes a keen interest in bins, asked me what I was doing when he saw me photographing the bin, and when I told him I was going to post on MN he suggested I hide the crisp packet as it "isn't very aspirational". I'm now wondering if dh has s secret MN habitConfused

He should PM the guy who spends all his time cyberstalking the poor OP on another thread today (poor other OP Sad)

Does her in the photo's bin push back under the counter then or is she sooo chuffed with it that she likes having to walk around it? Smile

HowBadIsThisPlease · 03/04/2016 21:28

You could have eaten that yellow pepper. What's wrong with it?

kippersyllabub · 03/04/2016 21:39

Is that Monster Munch?

Itinerary · 03/04/2016 21:44

I wouldn't. But some people spend that amount on luxuries of their choice, so why not treat yourself to something useful like a bin if you prefer?

londonrach · 03/04/2016 21:52

Kipper. You have a very neat bin and now i want monster munch...cant remember when i last had it, do they still do pickled onion flavour?

londonrach · 03/04/2016 21:54

Love the fact kippers dh is worried about mn! Grin. Hi kippers dh....you bin looks very neat.

BeaufortBelle · 03/04/2016 22:07

If you didn't have to bend for the bottom bit I'd buy one Grin. I have decided I need something better than a,2002 dented Brabantia. Couldn't find a nice food caddy replacement though.

Chapsie · 03/04/2016 22:19

Has anyone calculated the £ per use amount yet?
I base ALL purchasing decisions on this basis and I suspect the bin will in fact be good value for money.

MakingJudySmile · 03/04/2016 22:21

I thought it was Worchrstershire Sauce flavoured. Monster Munch is nicer though.

HerbieRidesAgain · 03/04/2016 23:13

I wanted that bin but DH is like yours OP and thinks its a waste of money Sad
