Is £200 for a kitchen bin fucking ridiculous?

kippersyllabub · 01/04/2016 22:13

So we've just had a new kitchen fitted, which we saved for years to buy. Our black plastic swing top bin (B&Q, £21.99 - I promise this is relevant later) has had a broken bit for the past 8 years or so, so the lid no longer fits snugly. It's also very ugly, although I guess that's subjective.

I thought I'd like to get one of those brabantia touch bins as they look nice but instead I was inexorably drawn towards this: www.johnlewis.com/joseph-joseph-intelligent-waste-separation-recycling-totem-bin-60l/p1897300?colour=Stone

DH didn't want any part in bin discussions. I did try to get him enthused about bin choice, but he wasn't really biting so in the end I proposed that I should have Absolute Bin Autonomy and he acquiesced. With my Absolute Bin Autonomy I purchased the above bin using the joint account.

DH now says that £200 for a bin is a "fucking waste of money" given the longevity and cost of our previous bin, and I'll need to repay him in favours involving vats of lube and marmosets. It may have been marmalade. (He is actually joking, for anyone who may take this literally.)

To me, Absolute Bin Autonomy allows me to choose the bin of my dreams. I admit that £200 is a fucking ridiculous price for a bin, but the autonomy principle stands, no? AIBU?

I admit I am reeling a little at the price: before looking, I'd assumed I'd be able to pick up one of those dual-compartment Brabantia bins and get change from £50, but I couldn't see many for under £120 and a few were £150-ish. Given a brand new Miele washing machine is only £400 or so, and that's basically a bin with electrics and plumbing, bin prices are quite high.

I love the fact it has a slot for the food caddy, so I don't have to have that on the surface the whole time. And it's sleek. And I can't afford a nice car, but can get that little feeling of extravagance each time I peel a banana or chuck away a yoghurt pot...

He gave you ABA ergo YANBU

However I'm sure Ikea would do a similar system which fits inside the cabinets and is not on show (yuck) for a fraction of the price.

You realise you will never get absolute autonomy for anything ever again, right?

coffeeisnectar · 01/04/2016 22:31

londonrach Do you play with fridge freezers as well? That's one of the best things about shopping! Playing with toys I can't afford :o

EnglishFern · 01/04/2016 22:31

If you couldn't find a bin under £120 you were looking in the wrong place...

MassDebate · 01/04/2016 22:31

I really like that bin, YANBU. Can't bring myself to spend that much on it though. Somehow £150 would be so much more acceptable to me

megletthesecond · 01/04/2016 22:32

I saw that one in JL and was tempted to get it until I saw the price. For reasons that I can't remember I spent a few quid on a naice Simple Human bin 7yrs ago and tbh it was worth it. The little design details do make it less of a faff to use.

MiniCooperLover · 01/04/2016 22:33

I spent £75 on an attractive one from Next. It's pretty and discreet but still smells bloody awful towers the end of the week. For £200 I'd want someone who comes and cleans it too Smile

LynetteScavo · 01/04/2016 22:33

A clever bin needs a clever liner that stays hidden and is easy to remove. Check for letters and colour codes to get the right size.

You do realise no one else is gong to buy these bins, and the bin liners are going to be incredibly difficult to procure, don't you?

It's also quite ugly and large, but hey, if you like it...

Get a local carpenter to quote you to fit a bespoke bin to hide all this crap.

Drops

on the table and walks away

Oh dear

I was prepared to say yabvvvvu and £200 for a bin? To put crap in?

Then I looked at the bin...😍

Coldtoeswarmheart · 01/04/2016 22:38

Blimey. I would have had another £20 one and spent the rest on something else.

LynetteScavo · 01/04/2016 22:40

Actually, having looked at all the bins on the market, it's not that bad....

kippersyllabub · 01/04/2016 22:43

£135 gets me a used bin off Amazon... The same bin costs £197.95 new, saving £2.04 admittedly, but I'd rather my money went into the John Lewis partnership than whatever tax haven Amazon uses once it's paid its minimum wage employees😀

Absolute Bin Autonomy allows you to buy any bin of your choosing but...200 quid??? Your DH probably didn't know there were bins that cost 200 quid and if he did, he probably didn't think you spend that much on a fucking bin!
On the basis that you did not, in my opinion, use your Absolute Bin Autonomy wisely YABU.

That being said, it looks a hell of a lot nicer than my cheapo bright red plastic one but possibly not 20+ times nicer.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/04/2016 22:44

Our bin is an in cupboard job from ikea for about £30 and I thought that was enough, especially as several attempts have failed to find the right sized bags for the damn thing. Luckily I didn't want a free standing one so was spared from thinking about that one.

Joseph Joseph products are lovely but so overpriced. I dithered for weeks over this food store carousel thing and I still haven't brought myself to bring it out of the cupboard because I don't want to have the 'how much did that cost' conversation with DP, which is odd because I earn twice as much as he does.

But where are yougetting a Miele washing machine for £400? The cheapest on JL are £560 and most of them are well over £1k Shock

I used to hang a carrier bag from me cupboard handles, now theyre 5p each its too much.

Soo yeah, £200+ for something a 5p bag does is ridiculous Grin

whois · 01/04/2016 22:47

You must have been living in the lap of luxury already, whois, if the right bin was all you needed to make your life complete

Well, if I could find away not to have to put away clean washing my life would be complete! :-)

kippersyllabub · 01/04/2016 22:48

barbara I think the Miele washing machine was £400 when we bought it 14 years ago (it's just still going strong and looking good so we don't notice its age). Miele is another example of ridiculous prices which turn out to be entirely justified.

OP posts:
Oreocrumbs · 01/04/2016 22:48

I'm not actually averse to throwing good money in the the bin . I have been the previous owner of 3 Barbantia bins that were probably about the £100 mark.....

But cleaning fancy bins is such a massive Arse ache. I'm now the proud owner of a supermarket jobbie that cost a couple of pounds, and I can slosh a bucket of bleach in and not have to polish....

This has brought back terrible memories of wresting a hose pipe and bin, dropping and denting said bin, then putting the bin lid in the bath as the only space wide enough to submerge it and scrub.... And of course scratching said bath Hmm.

For that reason alone yabu!

Melfish · 01/04/2016 22:48

It could've been much worse, did you see the one for £295?
this one

lorelei9here · 01/04/2016 22:49

Woah
I just paid £20 for a slimline bin for my tiny kitchen and I thought that was too much. But if you have it spare...
