to think disabled parking spaces are there for a reason, not for the lazy

We have a Tesco express at the end of our road. It has one disabled parking space by the front door of the store. The non-disabled parking is at the back of the store, so a bit of a walk to the shop, but not excessive.

It really rankles me to see white van man, young, fit, clearly not disabled drivers, young mums sending child into store, etc using this only space as it is so close to the door of the store. Not a disabled badge in sight. Meanwhile, elderly and frail drivers make the long walk from the car park at the rear. I have seen a driver pull into the disabled space, stay in the car with engine running, while the passenger pops in for supplies. Unbelievable!

This disabled parking space is rarely empty, and there cannot be that many disabled drivers in our town.

AIBU to think we need to leave disabled spaces for those who need them.

Lurking - no, not smartarses, but people with principles who are mindful of others so here's to a long and happy life to you and Mrs LH!

The experiences of Hollin and Bishop would not happen if it was a given that only those using the disabled spaces needed them and everyone else knew to leave the spaces alone and do what they should be grateful they can still do - walk a few more paces. It just takes a little consideration for others and a bit less selfishness.

I rest my case!

We get this at a shop near us as well and it drives me batty! What makes it worse is that there's estates all around, therefore adapted houses, therefore people living in aforementioned adapted houses and they have nowhere to park. It's also a SMALL car park so you aren't even that much closer.

FIL has a BB, as does my own DF. I was horrified when I popped out with MIL to the shops, we had to be early as 'the car park fills up quick'. Despite arriving early enough that we could have parked anywhere, she parked in one of the few BB spaces. WTF. She's not ill, she has self diagnosed herself as in need of a BB, MIL tells all so I know there is no way she would get a BB, so she uses FIL's.
As I hope you can imagine a person who fraudulently uses a BB that could result in her own DH loosing his BB is a narcissist. Sadly the phrase 'pick your battles' applies here and I just couldn't start another disagreement. My OH didn't cope to well with MIL parking over both white line simultaneously, reversing out of the space into another stationary car, drove off promptly onto a slip road in front of a moving car. I don't think anything could educate her, she would somehow twist it in her own head that they/she didn't understand, and carry on regardless.

scaredy perhaps her driving competency should be broached with the DVLA?

Scaredycat3000 · 31/03/2016 15:58

I have to be tactful, I've suggested/urged OH to go for a drive with his DM somewhere unfamiliar/dark so he can see her real driving for himself. We live some distance so given that and OH clearly doesn't want to face up to this nowt happening. MIL only passed her driving test recently, after decades of failing, after FIL was no longer able to drive. She can really switch on the sweet little old lady act, I suspect this was how she finally passed her test, and how she'd dismiss the DVLA, any traffic wardens that notice its not her BB and the RSPCA poor dog. I have no evidence for any of this.

No. They're a cunt.

Scaredycat3000 · 31/03/2016 16:20

You just called my MIL a cunt LurkingHusband Flowers She also used to use ambulances as a taxi to and from work.

BishopBrennansArse · 31/03/2016 16:23

I think she'd get a nasty shock ignoring either the DVLA or a traffic warden.
Significant fines and prosecution for both.
You do realise you can anonymously report BB misuse to the LA that issued it?

This is the one I posted earlier,
letterstothrive.tumblr.com/post/124188257827/image-words-not-all-disabilities-look-like

There are several designs available, if you google
not all disabilities look like this
or
not all disabilities are visible

then in both cases click 'images' you'll see a large selection Flowers

I take pills the night before I go shopping, and the morning before I leave. Even parking close to the store I can only make it part way round holding onto a trolley. Then if I sit down and let someone else pack for me I can just about make it back to the car holding the trolley for support. I can't unpack or put it away and am pretty much wiped out for the rest of the day.

If I had to park away from the store and walk I wouldn't be in a fit state to shop at all. I park as close to the store as I can in a normal space but don't feel guilty if I use a disabled one once in a blue moon.

I need a bb but the powers say I can't have one.

thanks Blank.
