To think you should get some sort of incentive to use self-check out tills in shops?

Seems mad to me that you are doing staff's work and you get nothing back. Even just 10% off the total of your bill would be a start.

The fact that I can speed through my shopping not held up by someone having a chat in front and taking their time, is the incentive for me. It's up to shoppers which experience they prefer isn't it?

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 30/03/2016 20:47

Love scan as you shop, I've got children with autism and if we're all out together it makes shopping a lot easier to whizz around and be out swiftly.

thesnailandthewhale · 30/03/2016 20:59

I didn't mind them until the time I bought 4 pints of milk and after getting back in the car and driving home I realised the seal wasn't sealed properly on it and half of it had now gone through the passenger seat. I contacted the supermarket and was asked whether I had gone through a self-serve checkout or a manned checkout, when I questioned why I was told that staff are trained to check for leaks by tipping bottles on their side while scanning, if you use the self-serve machine it's at your own risk Shock. After much ranting they did pay for valeting but I have never bought milk from a self-serve checkout since.

cozietoesie · 30/03/2016 21:02

I've never used one.

SlinkyVagabond · 30/03/2016 21:11

Supermarkets self scan all well and good, but what about the hell that is wh smiths self scan? Never seen one of them fuckers working ever. Bit like the rest of the shop really.

superwormissuperstrong · 30/03/2016 21:17

The ones in our local co-op are either out of order or in the time I am waiting in the regular queue there is always at least 1 problem - absolute nightmare and I would never use them for that reason.
I think the Tesco ones are better and I used to use them pre-baby because they would be empty. Now even if I have a small basket I like someone else to do the work. Have since seen that they seem to also have queues there these days so I can't see me ever going back to using them.

Paintedhandprints · 30/03/2016 21:32

I prefer scan and shop. Can bag my shopping as I go round. Ds gets to play with the scanner. There is no queue at the till and I'm out the door. I'm not waiting to load shopping onto a conveyer belt, then find I've picked the till with the chap who likes to read out the barcodes on all items as he scans them, and the shopper in front who has lost her many coupons in her massive handbag, all while toddler is trying to grab stuff off the conveyor or climb out of trolley.

wasonthelist · 01/04/2016 00:31

I don't have an hour long chat with the checkout person, but a little smile and hello and occasional couple of words is nice - I guess each to their own, but I don't find that a chore - I feel sorry for folk who do (on each side) it seems such a shame.

I really can't get my head around this determination some folk have never to engage with strangers - it can be really interesting.

A few weeks ago I met a really interesting bloke on a plane - that wouldn't have happened if I'd avoided his gaze.

MadisonAvenue · 01/04/2016 00:42

I don't mind them quite so much in Tesco but Asda's seem to be very glitchy and whenever I go in there the assistant manning them is always chatting away to someone working on the adjacent customer services counter, oblivious to the fact that people at half of the tills are requiring her assistance.

Qwebec · 01/04/2016 02:03

I don't like self-service. If I want people to support my job I feel it is important to support the job of other people. So I don't use self service at all except in the local libraries where it is the only choice if I don't want to be treated like a loony .
I also avoid buying on the web when possible for the same reason.

Pipbin · 01/04/2016 02:20

I must be the only person who never has a problem with self scan tills working.

What I have noticed though is that the sensitivity is different in different stores. Waitrose is quite lax and couldn't give two shits what you do. Sainsburys will yell at you for not putting a greeting card or other light thing in the bag.

Baconyum · 01/04/2016 02:22

I hate self serve think they should do away with the scales it doesn't stop stealing anyway! But I love the scan and shop. Can pack bags the way I want without being rushed, no interaction at the till no queue and I can tip all my change in towards the bill without embarrassment. All good

kickassangel · 01/04/2016 02:24

Those worrying about jobs shouldn't really. If enough people use the self serve then the store can make more profit and employ more people to stack shelves etc.

Although there is a finite number of people who buy groceries each week, so potentially another store will go out of business instead, but they can get jobs at the local factory making the self service tills.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/04/2016 02:40

The worst ones are morrisons and ikea in my experience.

Both accuse you of stealing from them in a roundabout way. Ikea make you agree to being watched by CCTV and ask you twice if you have scanned everything you have bought and it is impossible to get through the morrisons ones without the till shrieking on about a surprising item in the bagging area.

Whoever programmed the machine with that phrase can fuck right off with their surprising fucking item as far as I'm concerned.

Ironically, the only time I have ever taken anything from ikea with out paying for it was when I used a normal till and after I had told the till operator three times that they hadn't scanned all the boxes, I gave up and just paid what they were asking. I think it was a table and 4 chairs and they missed one of the chairs.

scarednoob · 01/04/2016 04:17

I like them - I like playing with the scanner!

However, my local waitrose has the weights all wrong on loads of items, so it fails catastrophically and repeatedly every time. The staff keep assuring us that it's being fixed. DP is going to commit acts of GBH on one of those machines any time soon.

It's a mini waitrose which is set up to make you self scan -10 self serves and only 2 cashiers - and often there is nobody on the tills, so we aren't being dim in continuing to use them!

camelfinger · 01/04/2016 05:30

I'm getting there with them now, and like the fact that you don't have to queue. I find that it's worth spending a few seconds ascertaining which side is the bagging area, and don't put the basket down until you've done this. Never ever select the option 'I've brought my own bag' even if you have. Just start scanning. Don't put anything in a bag until you've finished. I sometimes drop a light item eg greetings card from a height to make it register.

HelpfulChap · 01/04/2016 06:09

Self-service tills are the work of the devil.

The supermarkets thought they would save money by being able to reduce staffing costs. What they saved on wages they lost in shop lifting.

Why do you think Lidl and Also don't have them

I'm sure I read somewhere that one of the supermarkets was going to do away with them/reduce the amount.

And it's all very well saying "if you don't want to use them, join the queue for the normal checkout" but at my local M&S food hall they don't staff the normal tills until mid-morning, so if you call in earlier eg en route to work, you don't have a bastarding choice but to use the jumped-up, over sensitive, sanctimonious, bossy robot fuckers.

HelpfulChap · 01/04/2016 06:32

You are on the fence then?

LahLahsBigBand · 01/04/2016 06:42

I don't use them because I don't want to pack my own shopping. The checkout people do a far better job Grin

AppleSetsSail · 01/04/2016 06:52

Pagenotfound tell us, do you like self-service check out tills?

Wink

They claim that you can put your own bag on them and proceed with bagging your groceries, but this is a lie and for this reason I avoid them if I can.

YANBU that they should offer an inducement, but 10% would put them in the red.

londonrach · 01/04/2016 06:56

Havent managed to go through the self scan yet without calling a member of staff to help due to various problems with the scanner. Must be me?
