To be bewildered by 'christian'

I don't understand why some people pronounce this ''chrisht-chun'. Am I alone in this confusion?

OP posts:
curren · 28/03/2016 18:28

I don't know anyone who pronounces it like that.

I assume it's accent, or their speech pattern.

Everyone I know pronounces it Chris -tian

KP86 · 28/03/2016 18:29

I say it as per OP. I also know someone with the name and that's how he says it, too.

Clearly a dialect/accent thing.

Chocolatteaddict1 · 28/03/2016 18:30

I suppose it depends on your accent and where your from. I don't pronounce it like that

Allbymyselfagain · 28/03/2016 18:30

I pronounce it christchun. Dunno why always have.

Keeptrudging · 28/03/2016 18:30

Bloody hell, where are you from? Easter Shock

acasualobserver · 28/03/2016 18:31

Perhaps they're rhyming it with words like 'station'?

ColdMeatPlatter · 28/03/2016 18:32

I pronounce it as in the op as well, I'm from NI.

Keeptrudging · 28/03/2016 18:36

I'm trying it in my best Irish accent now, it's almost working Grin.

AuntieStella · 28/03/2016 18:37

It's because (when you're not thinking about what you're saying, so you need taping when you don't realise or for long enough for you to relax) people assimilate one sound into another. Obviously how much you assimilate depends on your accent.

I think the classic example used in linguistic courses is 'handbag', which people actually say 'hambag' but would deny they do so.

Noisytraffic · 28/03/2016 18:39

Jane on Eastenders always used to pronounce it that way when the character with the said name was in it. Someone just said it on TV and it reminded me of how odd I find it.

Erm because people have different accents and so pronounce some words differently?

Don't see what the confusion is...

MrsJayy · 28/03/2016 18:49

I say chris tchun if i try and say it properly it sounds like chrs chin im Scottish though so its the accent I also cant say Karl its Karrul

cubesofjelly · 28/03/2016 18:52

Is it supposed to be pronounced criss-tee-an? Confused

I only ever hear it pronounced criss-chun IRL. I live, work and grew up in London.

RudeElf · 28/03/2016 18:55

I always loved the way morgan freeman said it in prince of theives. Krist-ee-un.

I am in NI and say krishchin

I always assumed so, Cubesofjelly, given that 'st' is not pronounced as 'sht' in any other words (that I can think of, anyway).

OP posts:
RoganJosh · 28/03/2016 18:55

I would sound really affected and prissy if I said chris tee an. Do people really say that? It's like saying tiss yoo instead of tishoo for tissue.

People having different accents really is not something to get bewildered about, OP.
If this disturbs you so much, I wonder how you get through a normal week in the outside world. Hmm

MrsJayy · 28/03/2016 19:00

The actress who plays jane beale is Scottish her accent is great but you can hear her say things like a scot

Palomb · 28/03/2016 19:00

I'd say Chris-chun and Chris-mas.
So does every one I know and I've lived all over the SE and now live in the West Midlands.

It's supposed to to be chris-chun. Anyone saying Chris-tee-an is v wrong. Grin

x2boys · 28/03/2016 19:01

What am I supposed to be doing, OP? Chris-tee-un?

Fuck that. Do you say pee-ar-no as well?

Kris-Chn.
