Am I missing something here ?

Clearly there is a scarcity of money - and certain areas are rightly ring fenced .

But don't tell me that most working families can't afford an average of £50 a month - this would exclude people on low income , and for some families it £10 and for some £200 -

The UK is full of families and individuals with disposable income - a minor tax increase for 40% of the working population could raise £11bn

So why won't they do it ??? Baffles me - I would personally rather pay more tax and know that the vulnerable are cared for

Either these are exceptionally wealthy MN's paying millions in tax or they don't use any public services at all

Yes there are people who don't use public services like me.

GreenishMe · 25/03/2016 18:44

Bailey yes I read all your post and I shadily as fuck highlighted the relevant part of the mainly irrelevant content - but you still don't get it do you?

£50 for a night out is blase money to you (that's the relevant bit of your post). £50 to kali is two-thirds of her weekly income (the relevant bit of my post).

Yes, I give a fuck about people whose wages depend on other people spending. The £50pp not spent in pubs and restaurants by your town folk would most likely be spent instead in food halls by people in kali''s position - creating jobs in the food manufacturing and retail sector. Work it out

BunnyTyler · 25/03/2016 18:45

*Yes spring, I live on a rainbow tinted world.

Clearly you do as you didn't believe another poster on this thread when they told you how many hours they worked and were rather rude to them. Some people do actually work a shitload of hours and pay a shitload of tax for the privilege.*

Spring, that ship has sailed now.
Most people don't work 126 hour weeks, every week.
Bengal confirmed that her area is very, very specialised and that she is outwith the norm.

Perhaps you could back off now?
Thanks ever so much.

Janeymoo50 · 25/03/2016 18:46

Personally I think everyone should pay some tax, even the very lowest earners. Of course it needs to be commensurate with earnings but even someone earning under 10K should pay a tiny percentage in tax, meaning everyone is putting something in the pot. Overseas visitors should pay for NHS treatment too.

Madbengalmum · 25/03/2016 18:49

Ghostly, i will say it again Yes, it is silly from your point of view.
There are lots of people who educate their kids privately or no kids, have health insurance etc and they are contributing substantially more than they are taking out.
As i say, it has to be seen from all different perspectives.

Madbengalmum · 25/03/2016 18:52

What i have an objective n to get s large companies avoiding tax and company directors paying themselves huge salaries in dividends and paying the absolute minimum of tax on this. Not fair, people on a minimum wage pay more tax.
If we looked into this, maybe alot of our contribution issues would be sorted out.

Bailey101 · 25/03/2016 18:54

Greenishme What is there to get? All I'm getting from your rantings is that service staff in entertainment venues shouldn't have jobs and the money should go to supermarket profits instead Hmm

I'm not going to feel bad for spending money in my local area. You should work on your reading comprehension however. At no point did I say I was blasé about money, I pointed out the effect on the local economy that a decrease in spending would have.

If you're going to get on your high horse, at least have a valid point while doing it. Majing shit up just makes you look a bit silly.

Homeriliad · 25/03/2016 19:04

With regards to the rich leaving the country if tax is too high*, Americans have to pay income tax even if they live and work outside the country; could we not introduce a similar concept? Maybe only applied to people earning over a set amount?

*Although they never seemed to leave in the 30-40 years after the war when the top rate of tax was much higher under both the Tories and Labour.

GreenishMe · 25/03/2016 19:04

Bailey the £50 which you state you're not blase about but clearly are because you see it as a night out on the town could provide both jobs (albeit in a different sector) and food for those most in need.

I'm not on a high-horse at all - simply pointing out the view from the other side. As for being silly.....that's rich coming from you Smile

JeVoudrais · 25/03/2016 19:05

Many people say they would happily pay more tax if they knew it was going to the NHS.

I now it's gone to 9 pages now but 'health tourists' don't cost the NHS anything like what you think they might. New procedures came in last April to aid with that anyway.

Bailey101 · 25/03/2016 19:10

Awwww bless your wee heart Greenishme, if getting angry about things you've made up in your head keeps you happy then crack on. Be warned though, if you take that approach to people in real life, they'll get tired of your shit pretty quickly.

And on that note, I'm off out to enjoy my Friday night wasting money on the service industry. Enjoy your evening, won't you.

GreenishMe · 25/03/2016 19:15

Have fun Bailey Wink

Chalalala · 25/03/2016 19:18

Out of curiosity, how does one flat out "not use public services"? Do you not use roads, or get your trash picked up? Do you not rely on the police, firemen, intelligence services to keep you safe?

cannotlogin · 25/03/2016 19:27

herecomethepotatos You realise that public spending is way more than education, healthcare and pensions?

If you are run over in the street, would your private health insurance send an ambulance and treat you in A&E? Or do you think rich people are immune to accidents? Do you think rich people should make no contribution towards the police and armed forces? Road maintenance? Social Services? Or do rich people not abuse their children, or get raped, robbed and murdered? Do rich people not use roads - driving in their private cars taking up way more road space than the plebs on the bus?

Under current rules your private pension doesn't negate your right to a state pension. And plenty of poor people have their own pension provision, albeit at the same level as the rich.

RufusTheReindeer · 25/03/2016 19:30

I am with bunny

I have also never heard of anyone working 18 hours a day, 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year (assume you get 4 weeks holiday)

But thats the fun thing about mumsnet...you learn something new every day

GreenishMe · 25/03/2016 19:35

twiddles thumbs ....might as well go now Blase Bailey's fucked off...in more way than one Grin

Chalala and cannot - nail on the head

ghostyslovesheep · 25/03/2016 19:35

Not sure why it's 'silly from my point of view?' from my point of view it makes perfect sense - because most people don't do that - the minority might (although my friend who privately educated uses everything else) but they are far from the majority - especially on MN - which is what I was referring to.

I would happily pay more in tax to support those worse off than myself - because I believe that's what you should do

Madbengalmum · 25/03/2016 19:36

Ghostly because in your thread you said it was silly!

SpringHasNearlySprung · 25/03/2016 19:52

I would happily pay more in tax to support those worse off than myself - because I believe that's what you should do

If you were already paying nearly half your salary in tax you'd seriously be happy to pay more? I don't think so! Tell that to someone whose already paying 45% tax. Do you not think people that are in the higher tax bracket already pay enough? DH and I don't work to support others, we work to have a nice life and support ourselves. It's outrageous to expect people who are already paying a shitload in tax to pay more.

Cleo81 · 25/03/2016 19:54

Madbangleman-I couldn't disagree with you more. My dh has a small business and is a director and is trying to grow. It's taken him over 10 years to grow his business, 10 years of struggling, until now we are finally in a position to have some left over
Money for saving per month. Why should he pay more tax after working so hard and taking all the risk to grow his business? It would be stupid to tax small to medium size businesses more, they are needed to boost the economy, they are needed as employers. If he paid more tax he wouldn't have the money to grow the business.

People who are start their own businesses and are forward thinking and take risks so are doing well from that should not be punished.

Saying that, I totally agree with taxing huge businesses like Google and Facebook more but not those trying to grow.

Cleo81 · 25/03/2016 19:56

Ps- however, they are changing the laws to increase tax for wages paid in dividends and it makes me extremely angry. This should be means tested NOT for everyone.

BunnyTyler · 25/03/2016 19:59

DH and I don't work to support others, we work to have a nice life and support ourselves.

Fine.

But if the unthinkable happens and you find yourself unable to do that thing you took for granted - the ability to work - who looks after you then?

ghostyslovesheep · 25/03/2016 20:05

well exactly Bunny .

I was safe in my lovely 3 figure income marriage claiming nothing (but never ever being smug or judgy about those who did - I grew up with a single mum on benefits) but then my husband walked out when our 3rd baby was 4 months old - shit happens even if you don't expect it

Madbengalmum · 25/03/2016 20:12

Cleo, perhaps read what i said, wasnt talking about taxing small business, just large tax evading corporations which you have said you agree with??!!

SpringHasNearlySprung · 25/03/2016 20:15

who looks after you then

US. We have private health insurance and savings as well as investments and pensions. bunny you said earlier in the thread you wanted me to back off. Wind your neck in and go play in la la land where no-one works 18 hour days. Yes, shit can happen and we have financially covered shit happening.
