To wonder why the conservatives won't just tax people more ??

Am I missing something here ?

Clearly there is a scarcity of money - and certain areas are rightly ring fenced .

But don't tell me that most working families can't afford an average of £50 a month - this would exclude people on low income , and for some families it £10 and for some £200 -

The UK is full of families and individuals with disposable income - a minor tax increase for 40% of the working population could raise £11bn

So why won't they do it ??? Baffles me - I would personally rather pay more tax and know that the vulnerable are cared for

With regards to the rich leaving the country if tax is too high

That's an interesting point and I can see that the conservatives have the idea that if they tax these people less they stay and benefit the economy
But I can't see a wealthy person minding an extra £200 - that's a dinner , a sweater , a facial to them

My point is a small percentile increase for everyone (with exceptions) could easily generate a lot of well needed revenue

But there are so many counter arguments !

Pity that poor Mayfar beauty salon etc

Too add, why shouldnt people running any business big or small pay tax? Everyone else has to.

BunnyTyler · 25/03/2016 20:17

Ghosty, I was in a 16 yr marriage on a combined income in excess of £80k - signed into a contract of work which was due to last until 2025 (I had already completed 20 yrs there).
No benefits, but not judgemental either.

In the last 12 months I discovered my husbands long term affair, became a single mum, got medically discharged from my job, lost my house and am too ill to work at all at this time.

How the mighty fall!!

But hey, thank fuck for the safety net of the welfare state.
You don't realise what you take for granted until it's gone.

Hope all is going better for you now - onwards & upwards as ever. Thanks

SpringHasNearlySprung · 25/03/2016 20:17

Also Bunny

If you were already paying nearly half your salary in tax you'd seriously be happy to pay more? I don't think so! Tell that to someone whose already paying 45% tax. Do you not think people that are in the higher tax bracket already pay enough? DH and I don't work to support others, we work to have a nice life and support ourselves. It's outrageous to expect people who are already paying a shitload in tax to pay more.

Here is what I said, don't be selective in posting parts of what I said to suit your own agenda.

BunnyTyler · 25/03/2016 20:20

Whatevs Spring.

You're very excitable and hostile, aren't you?!

Too many Easter eggs today addling your empathy?

AndNowItsSeven · 25/03/2016 20:23

Most people can't afford enough life insurance to live on spring. Don't let that stop you being smug though.

BunnyTyler · 25/03/2016 20:23

I could ask the same of you Spring.

Stop selectively quoting my posts.

I didn't once say that people never work 18 hour days; I said I didn't believe that people work 18 hours a day, 7 days a week, every week without respite.

But apparently I am mistaken and I acknowledged that.

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 25/03/2016 20:23

I am off for a creme egg personally .

Roll on the election Grin

Judging by this thread the conservatives might well win again

Not many people are lucky enough to be able to do work they enjoy, unfortunately. The reason they do it is for the money to sustain them and their families. They already pay a lot of tax. Why should they pay more? Especially someone who might be earning 35000 a year, for example, and doesn't walk away with an enormous amount net. I'm afraid that I disagree with your logic op. I'm happy to pay tax but I wouldn't like to pay more than I pay right now.

EricNorthmanSucks · 25/03/2016 20:24

stopfuck for me it's not about a small amount of extra tax that I can afford to pay.

It's about fairness.

For me it is simply unfair to ask anyone to pay more than half of any £ earned in tax.

If I make a £ then if course I have to pay some of it in tax. But more than half? No. That £ was earned by my labour, my time, my talent.

ghostyslovesheep · 25/03/2016 20:25

you don't pay 45% tax - you pay 45% tax on earnings OVER 150,000 stop the hyperbole!

GreenishMe · 25/03/2016 20:27

Judging by this thread the conservatives might well win again

.......NOooooooooooo!

Madbengalmum · 25/03/2016 20:27

Bunnytyler, you told me i was a liar talking boll**cks about my hours!

EricNorthmanSucks · 25/03/2016 20:28

No hyperbole.

I said very clearly that I should get to keep at least half of any £ I make. It doesn't matter which £.

BunnyTyler · 25/03/2016 20:28

And then I apologised and acknowledged that you had a very, very specialised and niche job, which is outwith the norm.

BunnyTyler · 25/03/2016 20:29

Again, selective quotation is misdirection.

AnthonyBlanche · 25/03/2016 20:30

Bunny have you ever thought of getting some sort of home based work? I understand that you're not well enough to go back to anything like your previous job but you are clearly articulate and intelligent and are able to use a computer for a reasonably sustained period. Is there any sort of work out there that you could take on and do from home? Must be awful having to survive on £70 odd pounds a week - even if you only earned a few pounds it would make a difference.

SpringHasNearlySprung · 25/03/2016 20:31

40% up to £150,000 45% on earnings over £150,000. Is that not enough for you Ghosty? Perhaps a flat rate of 40% tax for everyone would be fairer as there appears to be quite a few on the thread happy to pay more tax.

Madbengalmum · 25/03/2016 20:31

Yes Anthony what a good idea!

BunnyTyler · 25/03/2016 20:33

To be fair Blanche I have a small medical pension from my previous job which is just enough to keep going.

I've already been accepted to start at university in September as I need to head in a new career direction now.

I am unable to work right at this time, but I hope to be able in the future and university is the first step in my plan.

ghostyslovesheep · 25/03/2016 20:34

20% up to 31,000 you forgot that bit :)

My ex husband has always paid that - he's in the higher tax bracket - he never minded as he sees tax as his contribution to society - he never did moan about paying it

I work in the public sector I can only dream of earning enough to pay 40% tax Grin

AnthonyBlanche · 25/03/2016 20:36

That's good to know Bunny. Pleased to hear you're taking steps for a better future. What you going to study?

EricNorthmanSucks · 25/03/2016 20:36

But don't forget ghosty some of us have no allowance at all and also have to pay NI.

I really do feel that I pay more than my fair share. To ask for more is just not right.

BunnyTyler · 25/03/2016 20:39

Psychology & Sociology - would like to be an education psychologist or similar.

My previous job was aircraft engineer which I am physically unable to do now, but I am young enough at 41 to start over.

I have lots of engineering Qs so could go into teaching perhaps too.

eyebrowse · 25/03/2016 20:39

People only earn enough money to get to the 45% tax rate because other people allow them to e.g. buy their goods, clean their homes, look after their children, are willing to forego a huge salary themselves and build their roads etc.
