I wouldn't even notice. And if I did notice I wouldn't give a flying fuck whether or not they were wearing make up.

Sexist bullshit. Don't let your boss get away with this.

My manager once asked me why I looked "odd" and I said I had no makeup on. I was only 25! He was all Hmm about it.

I was pregnant when I worked in retail and my make up never lasted longer than an hour it just would not stay on my skin. My manager asked me to put more on and I refused and said I didn't bring any with me she then offered me hers and again I refused. It's downright rude. If people can't accept a woman's face without make up the world has spun too far in the wrong direction.

I hate it. I wear it for me because i like it and like putting it on.

Its shit. And even worse when someone says that to you and your looking at all your co workers with their immaculate makeup and feeling inadequate.

Im going to have a word with her boss tomorrow I think because its made me really uncomfortable

Is it food you serve? I remember my aunt went for a job in a Thornton shop years ago. She said they weren't allowed to wear makeup, perfume or even deodorant as it would taint the chocolate! I hate seeing people serving food with anything other than plain nails. Also I'd like hair tied back rather than in my soup. Other than that I'm easySmile

I wouldn't notice, however I have had friends who've worked in shops where it's highly encouraged and even if they don't say outright they will make a point of mentioning that a certain standard of 'look' is expected because they are selling a lifestyle image and not just goods. I'm thinking TopShop and Miss Selfridge specifically. But I know that other shops do too and not just to women. I know that shop where young people go and they have the lights off and sometimes young men in swimwear (Abercrombie & Fitch? Not sure, too old) are big on that too including male staff.

I also know that some branches of Next expect a certain 'look' and I know of a man who worked for them who was spoken to about 'fitting in with the company image'. And that was not about not being smart, clean and tidy, but having styled hair and looking fashionable.

I guess their thinking is that customers won't buy clothing/cosmetics off someone that they wouldn't want to look like. It's something assessed at interview (however surreptitiously) for some stores too.

Does your contract stipulate make up? If not then your boss is out of order. Do any men work with you?

I would crazy but my full "im going out on the pull" look takes me a good 45 minutes and I value my time in bed more than proving a point 😂

I couldn't care less if they're wearing makeup or not. I do take offensive at lack of deodorant though.

The only time I ever notice is when a person has too much of it on. And then I don't really like it. But perhaps I just don't notice if it's subtle.
Sorry, but I think your boss sounded a bit snide. She was certainly drawing attention to the fact that you weren't wearing any. If a certain 'look' is mandatory it should be spelled out and be applied to male and female employees.

The last time I was in Next I noticed the SAs seemed to be wearing various items from the current range but they weren't obviously made up.

I tend to only notice women who are wearing waaay too much. No make up at all doesnt register with me.

That said, in my old job I used to wear just mascara and a nude lip colour and the one day I didnt (thinking no one would notice) everyone asked me if I was ok and my boss said I could go home if I felt ill. That made me feel marvellous Hmm

It wouldn't bother me at all if they were wearing makeup, it's their face!
I would be putting a complaint in though. Absolutely sexist. A male wouldn't be asked that. Women shouldn't be forced to or feel as though they should wear makeup. It should be worn because a person wants to wear it.

Wtf? Your manager was out of order. I can't imagine for a second that any customer would care and most would not notice.

Your face, your rules.
