Sainsburys "Girl" Bag

Sainsburys is selling a bag that just says "girl" on it (pictured) for Sports Relief. They apparently also sell one that states “Everyone is Beautiful”, but I have never seen it in the shop, just the "girl" ones.

AIBU to think that the "girl" bag is sexist? I cannot think of any reason why someone would want a bag that says that on it. They don't have a "boy" bag and I would think that its very unlikely that a male would feel comfortable carrying it.

It's not a bag that would inspire a female to get into sports or feel that they can do non traditional female things more.

Do Sainsburys think that only females do the shopping? The only way they could of made the bag more sexist is to make it pink with lipstick marks on it. Angry

Oh dear, what a typo!

Sorry folks Blush

mrsdevere I cannot stop doing something I haven't done though can I?

I didn't say 'girl' was a naughty word, I said it is used in a derogatory way - which it is.

I didn't say you had to refer to my daughter as a 'child' I said that I would refer to a female child using the word 'child'.

I have no idea why people would be against others using whatever means they feel necessary to fight sexism and gender stereotyping. I am not saying everyone needs to take the same line I do, and I have no idea why people would object to me taking the line I want to either.

ScarlettDarling · 19/03/2016 20:06

ice I can't believe that any mother with a daughter would feel that the word 'girl' is derogatory.

And yes, I can refer to my daughter as 'my child'. But I also refer to her as a girl, because she is one. Are we allowed to refer to our sons as boys? Would the bag be ok if it had 'child' emblazoned on it?

I honestly sometimes think that I must live in a parallel universe. Who on earth could find the word 'girl' offensive? Confused

IceBeing · 19/03/2016 21:21

I don't find if offensive, I find that it is used in derogatory sense to put people down.

I therefore wouldn't carry a bag emblazoned with it, and also call work colleagues on using it to describe either women, or men - neither of which I think it applies to.

TBH I have a far greater issue with 'everyone is beautiful' than I do with 'girl'.

I'll bite. What's wrong with everyone is beautiful?

DaphneWhitethigh · 19/03/2016 22:27

I'll try and explain what the problem is with "everyone is beautiful"?- I think understand what the problem is meant to be but I'm not 100% sure I agree.

Because beautiful is not important. It's like saying "everyone is thin and blonde". No, they're not, but that doesn't matter, because there are much more important things to be. Yes you can redefine beautiful to mean "a human being and therefore a person who has a fascinating face even though they're the Bride of Wildenstein". But from one point of view it's a bit like the people who on hearing someone sneer at Mary Beard for looking old or Jo Brand for being fat rush to their defence and say "no she looks great for her age/no she's big boned". The "right" response is "So what? She does her actual job well and appears to be a good human being" Criticising anyone who isn't a model for the unattractiveness of their face is like criticising a mathematician for not being able to span an octave.

louloubelle2 · 19/03/2016 22:29

Gosh, forget the bag and go and look at Bella Freud's mainline stuff. Words to take completely out of context and attach non-existent anti-feminist sentiment to include:
blondes
sweet
nice
i wanna
T.V Baby - pleeeeease start going on about this is offensive to anyone without a TV

they.are.just.words.

and as a side rage, you can get all cardigan twitchy about the £££ of the mainline sweaters too, have fun

DioneTheDiabolist · 19/03/2016 22:34

I quite enjoy it when someone uses "Like A Girl" in a derogatory manner. It gives me an opportunity to explain to them why doing so makes them sound "Like An Ignorant, Sexist
Fuckwit". And, do you know what? They tend not to do it again. Which is nice.Smile

steff13 · 19/03/2016 22:39

The vag isn't pink, sparkly or "girly" in any way.

Speak for yourself. Mine is very sparkly. :)

PurpleDaisies · 19/03/2016 22:40

I think you can get some cream for that at the chemist steff. Grin

DioneTheDiabolist · 20/03/2016 00:51

Mine is pink.

But, in my defence, I didn't get a choice in the matter and not one of my many, many bags, is pink.Confused

oliviaclottedcream · 21/03/2016 17:59

Is a wopman liking pink very wrong now then?

oliviaclottedcream · 21/03/2016 18:00

wopman -- sounds awful.!!! I meant woman...
