Sainsburys "Girl" Bag

Sainsburys is selling a bag that just says "girl" on it (pictured) for Sports Relief. They apparently also sell one that states “Everyone is Beautiful”, but I have never seen it in the shop, just the "girl" ones.

AIBU to think that the "girl" bag is sexist? I cannot think of any reason why someone would want a bag that says that on it. They don't have a "boy" bag and I would think that its very unlikely that a male would feel comfortable carrying it.

It's not a bag that would inspire a female to get into sports or feel that they can do non traditional female things more.

Do Sainsburys think that only females do the shopping? The only way they could of made the bag more sexist is to make it pink with lipstick marks on it. Angry

Eagles like that have been used for countless things bleary, not just by Nazis.

I'm happy for it to be reclaimed. When I first looked at that I thought more ancient Egypt than Nazi eagle.

Then I thought "thank goodness it doesn't say "lad"." shudders

seafoodeatit · 18/03/2016 14:00

I don't think it's anything to worry about. Perhaps if it was OTT 'girly' with glitter and fairies, but it's just a plain girl, I don't see what there is to get worked up over.

Lottie2611 · 18/03/2016 14:01

I have a pink boy london vest. Designed for women.

Some people on here get offended by absolutely anything.

Oh and if your a girl or woman, then that's what you are. If you don't want a bag that states it, don't buy it. Buy one with trucks on?

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 18/03/2016 14:02

The "Everyone is Beautiful" ones are always left in stock round here, the "Girl" ones are far more popular.

blearynweary · 18/03/2016 14:03

I love how AIBU is almost completely populated by anti feminists.

eatsleephockeyrepeat · 18/03/2016 14:06

I'm a feminist. But I believe if I want to identify with the label "girl", especially whilst doing something not stereotypically associated with "girls" (i.e. sport), then that should be absolutely fine. I'd go so far as to say it was feminist.

WoodleyPixie · 18/03/2016 14:06

This drives me nuts. Its just a bag, with Girl on it. Its blue, white and back, how is it sexist/offensive in any way?

My 10yr old daughter has one for her netball gear, perhaps I should have made her take it with her karate gear in instead, in case anyone mistook her for some feeble female!

As a grown woman/girl who likes to be identified as a woman and likes pink, I'm fed up of feeling increasingly like I am wrong to identify in such way. I was brought up fairly gender neutral as it happens, lived in dungarees with yellow/green/brown polo necks or t-shirts (70's and 80's) and terrible basin hair cut, we played mainly with lego and in the garden with mud and trees and swings/slides etc. But as I became older and developed my own personality and sense of style, I preferred pinks, purples and much more 'feminine' colours, also I never ever wear trousers unless for exercise now, I don't even own a pair of jeans. I don't see that makes me any less of a person.

A lot of these threads are daft. I think this is the daftest of them all.

GooseberryRoolz · 18/03/2016 14:23

It's just a bit pointless (and hideous) isn't it?

BillSykesDog · 18/03/2016 14:56

But..if you were an Albanian you would be offended by someone being offended by an eagle. Therefore being offended by the eagle and classing it as nazi imagery is racist. HTH.

PerryHatter · 18/03/2016 15:56

Must we be outraged about everything that isn't gender neutral. Gender neutral underwear next so as not to offend.

GeorgeTheThird · 18/03/2016 16:02

I'm just glad it isn't pink.

I agrees with MrsDeVere. It's a bit baffling, and not something I feel the urge to buy, but it's not sexist.

I had a pair of Boy leggings in the 1980s. They were extremely cutting edge.

DioneTheDiabolist · 18/03/2016 16:22

YABU OP. It's not sexist, it's a tote with the word "Girl" on it.

maydancer · 18/03/2016 16:27

God there are certainly some fruitloops on MN today!

possum18 · 18/03/2016 16:50

Okay so obviously i overlooked the possibility that some people could take offence to the eagle on the BOY logo, so probably not a great example on my part, in sorry. Principle remains though, it's not an offensive bag Grin

I'm slowly changing my views and seeing a lot of value in campaigns like everyday sexism. But this is definitely not sexist in my view, it's just the word girl on a very gender neutral tote bag. Fail to see any issue whatsoever.

Arguably it's better than the 'Everyone is Beautiful' too because it is at least factually correct (assuming it's been carried by a girl/young woman that is). The other one is a lie - not everyone is beautiful. Not that many people are in fact.

AndYourBirdCanSing · 18/03/2016 17:14

Er, why is the word 'girl' negative? I also hate pink bashing (I am very much a feminist by the way).
