To not "get" the fascination over Lena Dunham?

I know to many people she represents a lot of things but I can't help but want to throw her in the shower when I see her.

OP posts:
MissTessmacher · 16/03/2016 12:24

It hasn't been cancelled. Lena has always said she didn't want the show to outstay it's welcome and that she thought too many shows were dragged out way beyond their shelf life.

It's S5 that has just started on HBO. S6 is going to be the last season.

I don't care that she might have gotten her break because of her family. And I don't mind that the characters come from middle class families. I do too and that's precisely why I relate to it so much. Finishing college and trying to finding your dream career, the evolution and breakdown of friendships, crappy boyfriends - it's all brilliantly familiar to me.

This is the normal kind of face saving stuff said when shows are cancelled. But that doesn't change the fact that it's bombed on HBO in the states and bombed on Sky here, so no matter how much face saving arse covering Dunham does the option for another series just wouldn't have been on the table.

Yes, obviously there will be some people who like it, but that doesn't make it important or relevant. It was an overhyped show which never even came close to fulfilling initial expectations or justifying the resources it had chucked at it.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 16/03/2016 12:34

I really like her but I just cannot get into Girls. I've tried a few times and can't get past the first 3 episodes. Boo!

ifgrandmahadawilly · 16/03/2016 12:40

I like her work, especially girls, but I find her incredibly irritating. She just has one of those faces, doesn't she?

She tends to come off as a bit narcissistic / out to shock or get attention, entitled, whiny hypocrite.

notquitehuman · 16/03/2016 12:46

I find her boring and unoriginal. She wouldn't have gotten close to this level of success without rich parents.

The stuff in her biography about her touching her sister was just Shock. She had one hell of a weird upbringing.

ctjoy103 · 16/03/2016 12:47

Yanbu, she's bland boring and blah.

chipsandpeas · 16/03/2016 12:49

if its bombed why is season 4 still on in the US and theres plans for season 5 before it finishes

MadisonMontgomery · 16/03/2016 12:51

I can't bear her, especially after the stuff when her book came out - she sounds creepy as hell.

Twinkie1 · 16/03/2016 12:52

I've seen Sherlock and Imitation Game and the sheer scope of Benedict Cumberbatch still eludes me!

Is Lena Dunelm the slightly podgy, unwashed looking girl?

Branleuse · 16/03/2016 12:57

what fascination???

Youre the one who is watching her shows

BillSykesDog · 16/03/2016 13:10

chips. Some info on that here:

Probably because they don't have anything ready to go to replace it with tbh. HBO is having issues with a few of it's shows including Girls & Vinyl and doesn't have much lined up. It's not getting the key demographics either, young people don't watch it.

Leviticus · 16/03/2016 13:18

Connected or not, I think the writing in Girls is innovative and different and that she's a good actress. She's also achieved a hell of a lot, which hasn't just happened to her as she sat on her arse.

I stand by what I said. I'm explaining why I admire her, not saying that anyone else is obliged to.

RudeElf · 16/03/2016 13:24

Everything billsykes said. Girls was horse dung.

shins · 16/03/2016 13:27

MissTessmacher, she's not middle class. The school she went to charges fees of between $30,000 and $40,000 a year. I found it ironic that Girls was seen as some kind of downmarket riposte to the glitzy consumerism of Sex and the City. The SATC actors all came from solidly middle class backgrounds and very much paid their dues, whereas the Girls cast are fabulously wealthy and connected. I don't hate rich people but it's a depressing trend when a tiny privileged sector are so over-represented. Same in the UK with your Cumberbatches and Redmaynes etc.

rubybleu · 16/03/2016 14:13

I read Not That Kind of Girl and struggled through it - Lena is breathtakingly self-absorbed. You can see it to a certain extent in her character on the show but the book was something else.

Kennington · 16/03/2016 14:37

I like the Tv show girls because it is funny.
However she is very very privileged so I can see why she might get some people's backs up.
It isn't like the cast of Eastenders are commended for being unkempt so I don't see why she is congratulated for it specifically.

Mrsfrumble · 16/03/2016 14:49

I do think she gets a lot of shit thrown her way that wouldn't happen if she wasn't young and female, or was more conventionally attractive. I quite like Girls; it's not going to change the world but it's cute and quirky and more interesting than a lot of stuff on TV at the moment.

So to sum it up, I wouldn't describe her as worthy of "fascination", but I don't think she deserves all the opprobrium either. I don't think she'd get either if it wasn't for her gender or looks, and I dream of a world where these things wouldn't be so relevant to someone's abilities as a writer and actor.

(Wow, I sound like such a dick. But you know what I mean....)

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 16/03/2016 17:02

I think its because she is a famous woman that's not "stereotypically attractive", she is also fairly vocal on some issues

its a shame that there are so few of them! then the few get slated

and what pootles said

chipsandpeas · 16/03/2016 20:53

BillSykesDog thanks for that, i usually watch stuff that gets cancelled mid season for low viewing figures Grin its not usual that the US networks cancel a season in advance tbh unless its coming to a natural finish

anyway regarding Girls, i quite like it, i watch US pace, sometimes i hate lena durham as i think she tries to be so contraversial but i also do admire her for not becoming a sterotypical celeb ie weight loss or cosmetic surgery
howver i am going to be more interested in her next project as a writer, its been said that Girls was loosely based on her life so imo thats easy to write and exagerrate, her next project will either be a hit or a bomb

2ManySweets · 16/03/2016 20:58

YANBU.

I don't get it either.

Ditto for Amy Schumer.

Ditto for Amy Poehler. Her book noted me rigid, unlike the very entertaining "Bossypants" by Tina Fey.

2ManySweets · 16/03/2016 20:59

*bored me rigid

(Sigh)

Crispbutty · 16/03/2016 21:36

I just think she looks a mess. The fact that she is not a stick insect is irrelevant. She dresses like she wants to make herself look a mess, and I dont care if its Kim Kardashian, Miley Cyrus or Lena Durham, I dont need to see any of them naked in the media.

Morifarty · 16/03/2016 21:43

If it was cancelled because of atrocious ratings, it would not have been given a season 6. It would have been finished at the end of season 5. 6 hasn't even been made yet and US TV networks don't throw money away on shows not yet shot just for the sake of it. They cancel.

ScarletForYa · 16/03/2016 21:46

She's a complete narcissist. Anyone seen her on the Graham Norton interview.

Plus the book she wrote contained some very dodgy descriptions of sexual things she did to her sister when she was a child.

She disgusts me.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 16/03/2016 21:47

The autobiography was shocking. Her arrogance made her think what she did and wrote about what acceptable. She seemed to find it a bit of a slap in the face when people were disgusted.
