We normally get the squeeze bottle variety, but when I last got some they only had tins.
And he opened it with a tin opener!?!? I have just found the evidence in the cupboard with tin foil over the top.
AIBU to have assumed that everyone knows how to open golden syrup tin?!?

I've never washed rice!

NeedACleverNN · 11/03/2016 13:34

I don't wash my rice but I do rinse cooked rice under boiling water just before serving

Hippoinahat · 11/03/2016 13:36

I never used to wash rice. We went on a trip to Vietnam and visited a rice processing place. They had a big, shaky platform thing (technical term)which shook the husks off the rice, and a chap standing over it, shovelling it over when it was done. And liberally dripping sweat all over the dehusked rice. It was very very hot, to be fair.
And so I swore to always wash rice from then on I still don't

MaisieDotes · 11/03/2016 14:04

My DH often lures a bear into the house in the early morning to assist him with opening cereal packets. Well, he must do because there's no other logical explanation for the tattered mess that remains of the packet afterwards.

I always wash my rice, but only because it turns out better that way. I don't care about the hygiene aspect. We have a bear in the house ffs, a few drops of Vietnamese sweat are the least of my worries.

Grin at opening the JPG perfume with a tin opener.

curren · 11/03/2016 16:49

Dh always washes rice (he does our cooking) his says it turns out better if you do. Not for hygine, although death rice sounds grim Shock

DancingHouse · 11/03/2016 18:20

MerryMarigold I don't totally blame him, as I opened a tin of Heinz baked beans upside down with a tin opener the other day, and it had one of those pull across things, except because the tin was upside down I didn't see it.

I always open my beans upside down.

When you store your tins the beans sink to the bottom of the tin and juice float to the top. So when you come to open it, flip the tin so the juice is now at the bottom which pushes all the beans out in one go and you don't need to go digging around for the last few stray beans with a spoon getting bean juice all over your fingers.

Oysterbabe · 11/03/2016 18:22

I store them upside down.

TheSkiingGardener · 12/03/2016 01:03

The idiot. That must have taken considerable effort.

I live the idea that corned beef from the deli is somehow different from normal corned beef though. No, it just comes in 6lb cans. And despite googling I cannot find a single picture that shows you how big they are.

nattyknitter · 12/03/2016 01:52

I actually picked a tin of golden syrup up in the supermarket today to check the logistics of such a thing. I tsill don't fathom how he came up with that solution. I too buy squeezy bottles these days. I haven't seen squeezy treacle yet though. Sad

I never washed rice until I shared a house with 2 chinese girls as a postgrad and they washed it meticulously before cooking it. I figured they would know better than me and followed suit.

I've recently taken to opening packets with holes in the top for hanging them up, upside down as it is easier/tidier to do it this way. This causes many pulled faces from other. I think it's just sensible, but there seems to be some sort of unwritten law that the writing has to be the right way up.

Leeds2 · 12/03/2016 02:12

How do you wash rice? Put it undertake cold tap before putting in pan? I have never heard of this, but willing to be converted!

PastaLaFeasta · 12/03/2016 02:38

Challenge him to open a paint tin that way! What did he do with the lid? And I presume there was a metal ring removed where he cut the rim. I'm not that old and grew up with tins rather than squeezey bottles.

Qwebec · 12/03/2016 02:56

Your husband did it the Canadian way, we don't have those fancy cans, he just used the wrong can opener.
It actually is sold in a can from the producer much like what you'd buy canned veggies in. With a triangular can opener (the type used for canned tomato juice) two holes are made in the top, one to pour it out and the other to let air in.

I used to wash my rice, but got lazy.

getyourfingeroutyournose · 12/03/2016 03:05

Okay, I'm REALLY big on my golden syrup, especially this brand so I'm torn.

There's part of me that is horrified and wants you to LTB. Harsh? Maybe. But then my partner threw the last portion of tiramisu on the floor (it seemed to be an accident) the other other night and it made me question if I could live with such a reckless man who clearly has no respect for dessert. I even messaged my mum and she was actually more concerned with whether or not he still ate it Confused. Same would apply to this situation; if he doesn't know his way around a golden syrup tin, he isn't my man Wink.

The other part of me finds this hilarious and wants you to know that you won the internets for this evening.

But mostly the former.

You know you're going to have to make flapjacks today, to deal with the syrup all over the cupboard...

NutellaLawson · 12/03/2016 05:31

Continuing the religious connection, Golden Syrup is called 'God and syrup' courtesy of ds2's poor diction (aged not yet two).

It's quite appropriate since we only eat it Sundays when we do pancakes for breakfast. God and syrup with cream. Yum.

figureofspeech · 12/03/2016 05:38

I caught my dh trying to defrost a chicken curry straight out of the freezer in a pan....
Luckily I happened to walk into the kitchen before he killed us all with food poisoning.
Clearly he wasn't acquainted with the defrost button on the microwave.
He is very intelligent, very good with maths, physics, logic until it comes to house hold matters....! Confused

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 12/03/2016 06:14

Im in Canada. I can get Golden Syrup in a tin. Molasses comes in a tetrapak with a screw top, which is a far less messy affair.
Corned beef is totally different here. They do sell Spam though.
And I can find you a bear if you'd like one to open a packet for you? I'd ask a moose but they'd struggle to get in the house.

DesertOrDessert · 12/03/2016 06:15

I wash rice before cooking. Think it depends on the method you use. If you cook in excess water, the starch doesn't need washing off as much. If you cook in the exact amount of water you need, tis better to wash off some excess starch before you start cooking.

To whomever buys value syrup: you philistine. It's revolting. Tate and Lyle all the way.

And, yes, store beans upside down so when you use the ring pull to open, most of the contents come out easily.

underrugsswept · 12/03/2016 06:29

LTB. How doesn't he know about the knife-under-the-lid thing? Outrageous.

megletthesecond · 12/03/2016 06:57

I cook brown rice in excess water then rinse with freshly boiled water. A lot of crud comes off.

Now I want golden syrup on toast for breakfast......

Footle · 12/03/2016 07:21

One of my best-loved possessions is a syrup tin which came with a slit in the top ( covered by plastic when bought , obvs, ) so it can be used as a money box.

AYD2MITalkTalk · 12/03/2016 07:23

I don't buy the value stuff! I'm not a complete heathen Grin But I do buy it in a jar. It was the first result on Google and I'm lazy. Hence the syrup in a jar.

sashh · 12/03/2016 07:42

How do you wash rice? Put it undertake cold tap before putting in pan? I have never heard of this, but willing to be converted!

Put the rice in the pan, put the pan in the sink at an angle and put it under the cold tap - turn the tap so the water runs over the rice and then out of the pan with the rice staying in the bottom.

Swirl the rice with your fingers, the water will start cloudy you keep rinsing until the water runs clear.

Taught by a Chinese flatmate - I do this for nice fluffy steamed rice, for basmati I start by frying with oil and whole spices.

But then at the moment I am down to only 3 different rices in the cupboard, I often have more - I do like rice.

Orda1 · 12/03/2016 07:52

I don't think I've ever seen tinned golden syrup either? Normally in a jar? Off to google...
