We normally get the squeeze bottle variety, but when I last got some they only had tins.
And he opened it with a tin opener!?!? I have just found the evidence in the cupboard with tin foil over the top.
AIBU to have assumed that everyone knows how to open golden syrup tin?!?

OP posts:

Have you seen the Lyle's syrup logo? It's a dead lion surrounded by flies. True story.

Bees woman, they're bees! It's from the Bible. Samson kills a lion, and when he comes back later some bees have made a nest in the corpse and have made honey.

I can't imagine many brand experts giving that logo the go ahead these days, I have to admit Smile.

Oh, and btw OP, you need a new DH.

BoreOfWhabylon · 11/03/2016 09:43

Ah, cross-posted!

Seriously? Has the man never seen a tin of paint before, to not be able to recognise a flip-off lid?

Honestly.

Sort of thing my DH would probably do too, if he ever went near the golden syrup.

KP86 · 11/03/2016 09:46

I'm laughing at the 'like a werewolf' comment.

How does a werewolf open things?

MrsSteptoe · 11/03/2016 09:50

KP86 opposable thumbs, KP. Fact.

Binders1 · 11/03/2016 09:54

This has made my morning! Grin

Mercedes519 · 11/03/2016 09:55

I'm just aghast at sanitys PIL opening wipes at the end. HOW annoying would that be?

FranHastings · 11/03/2016 09:58

I always thought it was a dead lion surrounded by flies too. Confused

This thread is both amusing and informative.

Blu · 11/03/2016 10:06

I like the idea if setting him a series of secret trials.
Corned Beef
Sardines
Fray Bentos pies (will he remove the whole raw pie to cook it?)

Also LOL-ing at opening ham 'like a werewolf '

Girlwhowearsglasses · 11/03/2016 10:09

YANBU

Found a tin in my parents garage from 1970s last year - labels till the same, Tin still the same.

Is he an alien? Grin

WelcomeToMusicTown · 11/03/2016 10:13

Loving all the assumptions that he must have seen a can of paint before. Maybe he hasn't, hence the confusion? Grin

My DH was stopped in his tracks by a can of corned beef, having never opened one before in 38 years of living on this planet. I don't know if that makes him naive or just classier than me...

Oysterbabe · 11/03/2016 10:23

I open corned beef with a tin opener, it's just easier. I absolutely love corned beef.

NewYearSameMe · 11/03/2016 10:25

The first time that H cooked dried spaghetti he broke it into pieces because otherwise 'it would have been too long to fit in the saucepan'. Grin He does originate from Asia so didn't have experience with spaghetti, but on the other hand he had plenty of experience of cooking with dried noodles which are more or less the same as spaghetti.

Ninjagogo · 11/03/2016 10:26

Loving this thread, sadly I have nothing DP related to add. Will be keeping an eye out for werewolf like packet opening though...

DustyBustle · 11/03/2016 10:26

You're husband may be a fool, but that's one hell of a tin opener you've got there.

DustyBustle · 11/03/2016 10:27

*Your !

SoupDragon · 11/03/2016 10:30

Loving all the assumptions that he must have seen a can of paint before. Maybe he hasn't, hence the confusion

What's wrong with assuming he's seen a tin of paint? Its hardly an unusual thing.

TooMuchOfEverything · 11/03/2016 10:31

I've got 'like a werewolf' playing in my head now, to the tune of like a virgin.

Elledouble · 11/03/2016 10:37

I love this thread. I've just horrified my partner with the Lyles lion thing. I can't believe people didn't know about that! He's a theology graduate, too.

Fluffycloudland77 · 11/03/2016 10:38

If you've got an old syrup bottle you can rinse it out and decant the syrup into it.

Oldraver · 11/03/2016 10:44

I open corned beef both ends with a can opener so I can shove it out.

This reminds me of someone years ago being snooty saying they only bought 'fresh' corned beef of the deli counter rather than the tinned stuff Grin

TinklyLittleLaugh · 11/03/2016 11:01

I love a golden syrup tin (and a treacle tin) though, I have them on my desk with my pens and pencils in and various others dotted around the house storing button and beads and the like.

They are cool and retro and free with the syrup Smile

Cornettoninja · 11/03/2016 11:03

Now I'm sad about the lion Sad pancakes won't be the same again with dead Simba on staring at me.

AYD2MITalkTalk · 11/03/2016 11:10

I haven't bought golden syrup in a horrible sticky rusting dentable tin for years. Partly because I'm diabetic.
