To prefer the smell of actual tobacco to that teeth coatingly sweet chemical vape crap.

I'm not talking as a smoker.. As a passive smoker.. Or just someone in the street. To me at least tobacco has that old world, masculine adventure, growing, curing, industry craft historic smell. The vape sweet crap is just like gobbling down an air freshener.

I would actually prefer to be around actual camcery smoke than the pink-smelling horror or the vape. Anyone else?

Congrats on being smoke free for 4 months Destinys :)

Your post does kinda confirm what the OP was saying though, if people can smell the vapour outdoors then it must be a pretty strong smell! Fine if you like the smell of vanilla but not everyone does.

MassiveStrumpet · 11/03/2016 13:36

I always vape menthol. It barely has an odor and not a sweet one if it does. My husband says he can't smell it even sat next to me in the car.

But I've almost never smelled anyone else's vape. I think if you catch a cloud in the face you might but otherwise... well, I was in a vape shop yesterday buying liquid and both employees and a customer were vaping. I don't think I smelled anything.

Cigarette smoke lingers in the air for a long time, coating everything it touches. It's obviously much worse.

Toxicity · 11/03/2016 13:54

I don't like either! When someone is walking in front of you in the street and blows out either smoke or vapour, its pretty grim when it blows in your face! The smell of some of those vapes is really sweet and unpleasant.

Does anyone think that some smokers are replacing one habit with another? If vaping is better for people than smoking then that is a good thing but I wonder if people will vape for years and years rather than using it as a tool to stop smoking?

WeAllHaveWings · 11/03/2016 13:59

Gave up after 18 years of smoking when pregnant 13 years ago, during my pregnancy the smell of even a little cigarette smoke made me feel nauseous for hours afterwards, and this has continued. The smell off a cigar in close quarters has made me actually rush to the loo to vomit. I like the smell of cigars before being pregnant.

My sis and bil vape, not sure what type/flavours, and I cant smell anything when in the same room/sitting next to them.

Destinysdaughter · 11/03/2016 14:59

Makes me feel sad when something that has been such a positive thing for smokers and has helped them quit fags MORE THAN ANYTHING ELSE EVER is still being targeted and complained about. What do you want us to do, go back to smoking...?

Destinysdaughter · 11/03/2016 15:02

There's lots of things in life that are unpleasant, pollution from cars, farts, B.O, people eating MacDonalds etc. I hate all of these but I don't come on here moaning about them as they're part of life!

SistersOfPercy · 11/03/2016 15:06

I quite like it. DS stopped smoking and started to vape a few weeks ago. When he visits he always has some lovely smelling cherry flavour or such like. I don't mind it in the house and don't see it as much different to the smell of a yankee candle but DH really doesn't like it at all. Not the smell, but he's adamant that it can cause him some harm from second hand 'smoke'. I've tried explaining but to no avail.

Branleuse · 11/03/2016 15:11

not at all. My partner vapes some blueberry vape thing, and I can only smell it if im sitting next to him and it doesnt linger, and hes now much less likely to get cancer and COPD.

BMW6 · 11/03/2016 15:12

I stopped smoking a week ago (on Champix) but DH has yet to try to quit - I hate the smell of cigarette smoke (esp stale smoke).
When I have caught a whiff of vape mist it isn't revolting at all to me.

Branleuse · 11/03/2016 15:13

The anti-vape brigade - I wish youd all fuck off and die yourself.
Never fucking happy

My dp has gone from coughing every single morning for almost half an hour and me being seriously petrified for his health, to having no cough at all. Skin being clearer, smelling much better, teeth looking much better.
Smoking is shit. Vaping has changed his life and therefore the whole families

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/03/2016 15:18

The anti-vape brigade - I wish youd all fuck off and die yourself.

Tiny bit unreasonable there I think. 'Don't like the smell' doesn't actually mean, "I hope you all smoke yourselves to death". I don't like stinky sweet perfumes either. Doesn't mean I want the person to shower themselves in excrement.

KayTee87 · 11/03/2016 15:53

Umm the op was just saying they preferred the smell of smoke than sweet vapour... where did the aggression come from?
I smoked 20 a day for around 8 years before quitting by using an ecig. They are great quitting tools but the sweet vapour makes me nauseous as does smoke now.
Saying you don't like the smell of something isn't having a go at smokers or people that vape.

Coffeethrowtrampbitch · 11/03/2016 16:04

Dh works for a vaping company and in the US they have recently done research with an artificial lung to determine what ecigs release.

There is water vapour, nicotine (if it's a nicotine based liquid), and 14 ppm formaldehyde (air has about 5 ppm). Nothing else, unless a person vapes without liquid or sufficient liquid, in the device, which is dangerous as it causes the person to inhale carbon monoxide.

So nothing in the vapour is harmful to you as a passive smoker. Cigarettes sadly are not the same, and the chemicals breathed out by smokers will harm you.

I know the bad smell is annoying, but at least it's not full of harmful chemicals.

Branleuse · 11/03/2016 16:56

The aggression comes from the fact that so many people, AND the government are trying to make things harder for people who are actually trying to improve their health and quit smoking

Ok maybe I dont wish them all dead, but I wish theyd shut the hell up

Raia · 11/03/2016 16:59

Coffeethrow, that's really good to know, thank you!

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 11/03/2016 17:00

Sparklingbrook, every breath you take has been breathed in and out multiple times by someone else!

Sparklingbrook · 11/03/2016 17:09

I meant at close range so I could smell the smoke/ vape Bewitched.

Toxicity · 11/03/2016 17:20

Branleuse, what do the government do that is making it harder to give up smoking?

TattyDevine · 11/03/2016 17:48

If the government make it harder to vape, by restricting access to products, putting prices up by making them be regulated, making e-liquid be sold in 10ml maximum bottles, making tank sizes a maximum of 2ml or something as well (all things that will make it more difficult and inexpensive to vape, which is initially one of the biggest draws that moves a smoker over to vaping, along with the health improvements), then there is less of a reason to give up smoking - if they make vape very difficult and expensive to get hold of, whack a huge tax on it, etc, you may as well keep smoking (to an extent)

It's hard to know what changes will happen, I think there might be some coming in in May, and it may also depend whether or not we stay in Europe, but if they grab hold of it and restrict it and restrict it and squeeze the price up and up then I do think that would be a real shame for reformed smokers who are happily vaping.

It's easy to say "just give up" but those who really rely on the hand mouth thing that nicotine replacement gum and the like doesn't give...hopefully they won't quash it too much. It has been such a positive thing for many.

Branleuse · 11/03/2016 17:53

What tattydevine said.

Branleuse · 11/03/2016 17:57

I have several people in my family who were heavy heavy smokers (MH problem - type smoking IYKWIM) and they have transformed their health by switching to vaping. Also known too many people whove died of lung/mouth/throat cancer from smoking.

Whether you prefer the smell of fags to the light smell of blueberry vape or whatever is your own business, but it just feels like another fucking thing to have a go at vapers. Even my dps family who were initially so pleased that he had given up chainsmoking after 20 years, are now starting to comment and comment about vaping. Let it go. He is SO much better now. its a godsend

Missyaggravation · 11/03/2016 18:23

Propylene glycol etc are oils, sorry to butt in, but that was annoying me Grin

Sallystyle · 11/03/2016 18:30

I wish anti vapers would fuck off too.

But I don't wish harm on them. I was a smelly smoker who was killing everyone with my smoking, I quit three years ago but now I'm looked down on by too many people for vaping.

My vape smells lovely.

7Days · 11/03/2016 18:35

Yup it's a godsend. The one thing about the 21st century I like. Joke btw. It does seem like having a go though rationally I know people are entitled to like or dislike smells or whatever. It just seems like people were moaning about smokers being smelly, thick, a burden etc and now giving out as well. It's a Puritan thing I think. People just don't like other people's useless pleasure .

Friendlystories · 11/03/2016 18:35

Yes Tatty it's changes to the Tobacco Product Directive which do indeed come into force in May and will make things much more difficult and expensive for vapers. Anyone would think the government don't want people to stop paying massive amounts into their coffers smoking.
