To think calls like this should be illegal?

I've just had a call that went along these lines

"Hello Lists, sorry to disturb you. My name is Tracey and I work for xyz company. I'm responsible for closing down the files related to your road accident and wanted to go over a few details with you before we issued the final compensation cheque"

What the hell... presumably she was going to go n to ask me all sort of questions that would allow her to steal my identity. I've never even had a road accident and god willing never will

How do people end up in these jobs? They must be miserable doing them for the most part. Are they dragged in from the job centre and threatend with sanctions if they don't take the job?

Dunno Puzzled Grin I'll need to look at that in the morning (don't want to wake DH!) - I will let you know Smile

I've had several calls from 'Microsoft' about ' the computer in your house'. This is an absolute scam which leads to them asking for your bank details to somehow prevent you falling foul of every computer virus known to man.

Last week I had such a call and asked the caller if their parents were proud of their job choice. Silence. These calls seem to be generated in Asia where such a question would be serious. They are trying to steal your money, no need to be polite.

BigcatLittlecat · 10/03/2016 23:30

@puzzled that is hilarious!

Qwebec · 11/03/2016 00:35

Once got a call from Microsoft
them: your compuster has been infected
me: oh no which one
them: the one that is now on
me: they both are
them: the one you are sitting in front of
me: I'm getting dressed for work
them: ah I see, well they are both infected
me: how is it possible?
them: they have been contaminated through the wifi waves

I also got a few calls from the "US govenement" claiming that since I am a good citizen I have won a lottery and the want my bank statements so I get recieve my prize. (I am not in the US nor American)
The line was so crappy I could hardly understand them
The firts time I offered to leave the my prize so they can buy getter phones, they cleanly needed it more than me.
The second time I asked them to pay me by check as I don't have a bank account, they got VERY cross calling me a liar and all.

FlyingRussianUnicorn · 11/03/2016 00:49

I had a call claiming it was my ins compny a few weeks ago regarding an accident. I had had one a few weeks before. I said id call back.

Call back the ins company who had no record of the call and told me that if it was a legitimate claim that they would of written to me.

So if you get any calls like this- first, ring the company direct and second wait to see if they send a letter to you.

80sMum · 11/03/2016 00:59

I simply don't bother to answer the phone unless the caller is in my contacts list. I often Google unknown callers' numbers afterwards. Without exception they are always junk calls, so I block the number.

I have over 80 blocked numbers in my phone! I don't get as many junk calls as I used to.

dodobookends · 11/03/2016 01:18

The last time I had one of these calls, they said they were calling about the accident I'd had, so I asked them which one?

Er...

LifeofI · 11/03/2016 02:04

How do you suggest the goverments makes people calling you illegal?

AnnieOnnieMouse · 11/03/2016 02:25

Ah I had one of these calls about an accident, but they said my daughter's name. I then 'freaked out' yelling to dh that dd had been in an accident, and demanding details, was she ok, which hospital was she in, etc etc. I did a proper number down the phone at her. She was then, of course, assuring me it wasn't a recent accident, and apologising. I then told her in a calm, bored voice where to go.
It's rotten, tho, every time dd has an accident, I get to hear about it. Poor thing has no privacy! (She moves round a lot with jobs, so permanent address is still here)

OrraBoralis · 11/03/2016 08:47

The one I use for the car accident is - oh cannot be me, they say well we have your details here Mrs Orra, I say I cannot drive because I am blind.

That shuts them up pronto. Apologies to any blind people for using it as an excuse.

Anniegetyourgun · 11/03/2016 09:07

How do you suggest the goverments makes people calling you illegal?

That's the easy bit. They've already done that. It's stopping the buggers calling you illegally that's the tricky bit.

Last time I had an accident one I asked them the date of the accident they were referring to. They wouldn't tell me for security purposes Confused

Tangoandcreditcards · 11/03/2016 09:13

I get a lot of these too...

I usually say "oh, it wasn't me, it was my son... I'll pass you through"

Then I hand the phone to DS (2) and tell him it's Paw Patrol Grin

eatyouwithaspoon · 11/03/2016 09:39

I regularly get the accident ones. I got the files downloaded on my computer the other day, i was jn a good mood so pretended Ibelived her and was typing on computer while .i had my coffee, I did tell her in the end I knew it was bull as work in IT and not to call me againGrin

RufusTheReindeer · 11/03/2016 09:58

Not a phone one but the other day we had an email form the local police saying that if we didnt pay them a £100 fine that they would arrest us for child pornography images on the computer

I dont know what country you live in mate but in this one they would be battering down my front door not asking for a fine!!

storminabuttercup · 11/03/2016 10:22

I was just reading this thread when I got one of these calls, was a silent one but Google tells me the number is for an accident claim company, I'm disappointed as all these ideas were fresh in my head.

specialsubject · 11/03/2016 12:24

BTW changing a landline number won't help. They've all been used now so they are recycled, and you'll just get someone else's nuisance calls.

Trollicking · 11/03/2016 14:20

storm. You should still report the call to OFCOM - details down thread.
