AIBU to think that MN need to come up with a way to stop fake posters?

It really is getting boring. Dull, dull, dull.

I'm not clever enough to work out a formula myself, but would removing the name-change function stop trolls being able to hide so much ? I appreciate this may have a negative effective on those who wish to remain anonymous, but maybe the upside would be worth it?

Another option - would having a flag that said "first time poster" help on an OP? or the number of posts an OP has made?

Too many times recently I read an OP and watch many posters fall into the abyss of answering honestly to a thread that has all the marks of a hairy keyboard sad twat.

OP posts:
quencher · 08/03/2016 18:20

I have changed my name recently but thinking about it now, it was pointless because I don't think am cable of keeping my views to myself.

Sparkling thanks for clarifying this. I had asked a rhetorical question. I have thought this too.

bbcessex · 08/03/2016 18:20

sparkling - I agree. There was one recently where the poster described 'herself' as a 'very intelligent young lady'.

Not vernacular that's used that often about oneself, in my opinion.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 08/03/2016 18:21

YY bbc the devil is in the detail.

WorraLiberty · 08/03/2016 18:22

Either MNHQ are not banning IP addresses, or trolls simply manage to change them...possibly by proxy server.

There's been a couple of posters in the last 24hrs who were banned, yet came straight back under a new account to ask about it.

I wish HQ would just let us have one topic where name changing is not allowed. That way people can at least chat to familiar names, while all the trolling and bullshit calms down.

Thread here - but we were basically patted on the head and told to forget it

bbcessex · 08/03/2016 18:31

That seemed like a very reasonable request worra. What was the reason given for not providing it?

OP posts:
NeedACleverNN · 08/03/2016 18:37

I love how random that thread is worra
Learned lots of new stuff about water cress. I'm educated me

StillDrSethHazlittMD · 08/03/2016 18:37

I wish someone would invent a way to stop people posting without reading the full thread while they're also sorting out the trolls.

TattyDevine · 08/03/2016 18:40

I am far more bothered by troll hunters on threads than trolls themselves.

Post after post of people trying to be clever about it, winking, saying trip trap, talking about bridges and hairy hands, "welcome to Mumsnet" with a wink, without anything else to add.

So fucking tedious. Just press report.

Sparklingbrook · 08/03/2016 18:44

Troll hunters will never be worse than the trolls.

Destinysdaughter · 08/03/2016 18:48

What if pp paid £10 to join and another £10 to name change...?

NickiFury · 08/03/2016 18:58

I prefer to be aware and appreciate troll warnings. It's horrible to pour your heart trying to help someone only to find ages later that they're taking the piss.

bruffin · 08/03/2016 18:59

Digital spy used to ask for a credit card to registered and a payment of £5 i think.

LifeofI · 08/03/2016 19:10

How do you KNOW a post is fake or not? This is WHY MN dont do this.
People on here will assume a post is fake just because they dont agree with something to Op said, i have seen it many times on here.

And people will say "first time poster" because some troll will point it out anyone and make out they are a troll when only trolls troll hunt, which is why its banned.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 08/03/2016 19:20

It's great for people to say 'just don't engage' but we're not just talking about the obvious trolls here.

We're talking about fairly believable, mundane, everyday stories where people give heart, soul and emotions.

And actually, thinking about it, telling posters not to 'overinvest themselves' when someone shares a story about a dying child is kind of victim blaming. If someone seems genuine and grieving, well, is this site not about advice and helping one another? Blaming someone for being hurt by a troll is shifting the blame from the troll to the posters and that's unpleasant.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 08/03/2016 19:20

What about the bitch last week who pretended to have a baby diagnosed with DS? Who had lots of MNers sharing their own stories with her? Offering her help and support?

Should the trollhunters just stfu when they see genuine, caring people on here being sucked in? Should we just say "oh well, bet 9 times out of 10 she's a lovely genuine poster so we'll just let this one big fat hairy trolling lie go?"

Nope. Not in my name.

sugar21 · 08/03/2016 19:23

Are we talking about my child?

No sugar

I remember that thread.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 08/03/2016 19:30

I prefer to be aware and appreciate troll warnings. It's horrible to pour your heart trying to help someone only to find ages later that they're taking the piss.

And when they're not taking the piss? And someone with a genuinely heartbreaking and desperate story is hounded off Mumsnet by trollhunters?

Posters on here cannot know if someone is a troll or not. The people with the best chance of determining this are MNHQ who have way more tools than intuition, and posting style.

I have been accused of being a troll before, by some "well known" posters - it really is not a pleasant experience, but maybe it's all OK because they were sure I was a troll?

sugar21 · 08/03/2016 19:31

I agree with Mrs D
I will not post about my daughter again

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 08/03/2016 19:31

No.sugar Flowers

bingandflop · 08/03/2016 19:31

Haven't RTFT but not allowing name changes would help

LilacSpunkMonkey · 08/03/2016 19:33

And here comes the Royalty bashing. From a name changer.

Unless you're planning to either name names itsall then pack it in with your cryptic 'well known names' shit.

People who do that should be suspended.

LifeofI · 08/03/2016 19:38

ItsAllGoing -
exactly, I have been hunted by the troll hunters before and my post was genuine and its because I got annoyed and replied back to a troll hunter and the logic of these idiots is "you cant be genuine if you are being goady" or maybe I dont like being called a troll when I am posting about a real situation needing real advice.

SurferJet · 08/03/2016 19:38

I'll never understand why the name changing facility is blamed on trolling? HQ can see when a poster has changed her name so she's leaving a big bleedin' trail of evidence isn't she Grin

No, I think dedicated trolls are a lot cleverer than that. ( multiply accounts // really techy types ? )
