To think you should be liable if your dog causes someone to have an accident?

My friend was out walking with her Weimaraner. Very friendly dog, doesn't approach people. However, he was off the lead and ran towards a woman on the footpath. Woman got scared and jumped aside, lost balance, fell and tore the ligaments in her ankle, needing surgery.

She is now suing my friend, who faces a hefty fine.

Now I'm scared of dogs and wish they would all be kept on leads everywhere but can see why friend is upset.

Who is being unreasonable here?

My CATS insurance covers damage to others/property upto tens of thousands of pounds. Anything less would be irresponsible.

Our spaniel has the brains of a gnat but her recall is amazing. Utterly amazing. We took her to Bad Dog school from day one, spent months teaching her and haven't ever had a moment's concern over her recall. However in public places she's always on a short lead at my heel. Without exception. She's an animal with legs and the ability to jump, run and go bezerk. Just because she doesn't, doesn't mean she won't.

Liability insurance should be mandatory for dog owners, like medical insurance. Can't afford to insure your dog? Get a gerbil and train that.
