to say something to the manager?

Posting here for traffic but want to keep details sparse to avoid the person in question recognised.

I am in a place where children make beauty products (don't mention the place please) at a birthday party.

One of the party hosts from the company is wearing a very heavy black dress and a headscarf.

She smells of sweat, maybe the sweat is in her clothes I don't know.

Should I say something to the manager?

Please let me know and please don't mention the place I don't want it to be identifiable.

Thanks!

Sorry. Continue

I think op has mentioned the dress of the lady in question as she is worried of being branded racist by commenting to the management.

Stand by my first comment. Staff shouldn't stink. Nothing to do with what they're wearing.

Skittlesss · 06/03/2016 15:07

Maybe you should make an extra bar of soap and give it to her, perhaps she has ran out of her own Confused

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 06/03/2016 15:08

Mind you, if you're very sensitive to smell, then you're very brave to be in this sort of party situation in the first place...

FigMango1 · 06/03/2016 15:10

Don't mention her attire, that's not relevant. You can complain about the smell though.

ThatsNotMyRabbit · 06/03/2016 15:13

Absolutely complain.

People who are paid to be around people should not stink. I'd also ask for a reduction on price.

ilovesooty · 06/03/2016 15:16

Her attire is irrelevant and if she wants to wear what she's wearing it's fine as long as it doesn't conflict with the code of conduct. I presume that if the smell is so intrusive you're expecting a partial refund?

Ameliablue · 06/03/2016 15:19

No you shouldn't say anything, why would you?

RealityCheque · 06/03/2016 15:21

Amelia, why on earth wouldn't you?

emanuela · 06/03/2016 15:24

I don't want a refund just to make sure this doesn't happen to anybody else. Not everything is about money it is that sometimes people need to know what is not acceptable in public. I don't care if she wears two furs on top of each other as long as she doesn't smell.

I was afraid I would come across as racist, that is why I mentioned how she was dressed

Amelia, why on earth wouldn't you?

exactly.

any other tbing yku would complain about. rudeness, mobile phone usage, language around kids, being ignored, being unprepared etc

turning up dirty and smelly to work is inappropriate. as is being late or rude to customers.

JOEYDOESNTSHAREFOOD · 06/03/2016 15:28

Thanks Notime Grin I changed when we got hacked, it was on TV at the time. I want my old name back though so might change back soon.

gleekster · 06/03/2016 15:28

Racist? Have I missed something?

OP you say you are "very sensitive to smells" so I think you need to get a second or third opinion on this before you start making official complaints that might have a negative impact on someone's job.

Are there any other adults? Do they think she stinks so badly it's reportable?

Do the children seem bothered?

If not, I would leave it be. If other people with less sensitive snozzles also think she smells awful then complain if you really feel you have to. I don't think I would.

JOEYDOESNTSHAREFOOD · 06/03/2016 15:29

You will risk coming across as racist if you mention what she's wearing when you complain. You don't need to, it's irrelevant. Just say she smells.

JOEYDOESNTSHAREFOOD · 06/03/2016 15:30

Politely, obviously.

ThatsNotMyRabbit · 06/03/2016 15:33

You don't need to come across as racist. Don't mention her clothes. Just stick to the fact she stinks.

MashesToPashes · 06/03/2016 15:42

I would mention to the manager politely, but assertively. If this isn't a one off the manager may be grateful to have a complaint from a customer to back up co-worker complaints, or, if the manager has been too embarrassed to bring it up, it might be the impetus they need to say what needs to be said.

I had the pleasure of telling several people they smelled (when their manager's bottled it) in my old job. It's not fun for either side, but needs to be done.

RealityCheque · 06/03/2016 15:45

I don't want a refund just to make sure this doesn't happen to anybody else.

The best way to make that happen is to insist on a (partial) refund. That way the company gets hit in the wallet and reasons have to be given for the reduced cash.

SoupDragon · 06/03/2016 15:49

I was afraid I would come across as racist, that is why I mentioned how she was dressed

Confused but that is precisely what makes your OP appear racist. Her clothing is irrelevant.

SoupDragon · 06/03/2016 15:50

If none of the children have noticed I would let it go.

ilovesooty · 06/03/2016 15:55

Exactly Soup
I can't think why her dress has been mentioned at all.

rookiemere · 06/03/2016 15:57

If the venue is where I think it is, I'm amazed your olfactory system is still able to distinguish anything after being assaulted by the many odours of the place. I struggle to last 5 minutes in there.

Is it your DDs party it's hard to tell from the post? If it is then after the event I'd email the manager - I'd find out the name of the member of staff and I'd just state the facts without any reference to what she was wearing.

If it's not your party then I'd just let it go.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 06/03/2016 16:02

As you're paying for the party, I'd complain. It might make it easier for the manager to bring it up if it's a regular issue.

originalmavis · 06/03/2016 16:06

Maybe she just didn't have time for a shower this morning, or suffers with terrible sweating.

If it is the place I think it may be, I'm amazed as the stores are so fragrant you couldn't smell a skunk in there.

If only mention her clothing if I was trying to describe her and didn't know her name (as in the case of our local where it would be 'the woman with purple hair', 'the woman with tattoos all down her arms and chest' or 'the man with the face piercings').
