Time for bed at 7 nearly 8

EllieJayJay · 05/03/2016 21:45

Having an argument with DP...

I think they should be in bed sleeping by 8.30 (stories excluded)

What do mumsnetter think...

They do wake up super bloody early but I figure we deal with this and I'm not a monster I think occasionally it's ok for them to stay up a little late

But what time do people 7 year olds go to bed (sleep)

OP posts:
Spandexpants007 · 06/03/2016 16:43

7 year old goes at 7.30 on the dot after reading in bed

SeaCabbage · 06/03/2016 17:11

I think some people think the later they go to bed the easier it is and the longer they will sleep. But as pp have said, this is not true. Early bedtimes are often much better for everyone.

jacks11 · 06/03/2016 17:13

my DD is 7, almost 8. She is in bed by 7:30 (a little later at weekends) and we read for 15-30 minutes (either I read to her, she reads to me or she reads by herself). She is usually asleep by just after 8 at the latest.

Passthecake30 · 06/03/2016 18:03

8 here, 9pm at weekends. Wake up is 7.15am weekdays, 8am weekends

Balletgirlmum · 06/03/2016 18:05

When dd was 7/8 she was always in bed by 7.30pm.

Ds needed less sleep and so it was about 8pm.

paxillin · 06/03/2016 18:30

Bed at 8:45-9pm, sleep at 9-9:15.

GreatFuckability · 06/03/2016 18:36

In bed by 8. Sleep by half past.

suitcaseofdreams · 06/03/2016 18:44

My twins are just about to turn 5 and are in their room by 7.30pm. One is usually asleep between 8-8.30pm, the other rarely drops off before 9-9.30pm, sometimes later....
They both get up at 7am during the week and 8am ish at weekends
One just needs less sleep than the other it seems
As long as they are upstairs and not bothering me I leave them to it :-)

DD is 6 and goes to sleep between 8.30 and 9. She reads in bed between 8 and 8.30ish then it's lights out. She's never been an early to bed child.

paxillin · 06/03/2016 18:53

I don't think you are going to get a sensible time this way, OP. I have a 7 year old and therefore know a lot of 7-8 year olds and their parents. The parents I know report bedtimes ranging from 7pm-10pm.

Reasonable bed time only ever is reasonable for your child.

DisappointedOne · 06/03/2016 19:49

5 year old vampire goes to bed on school nights between 8 and 9pm but often struggles to sleep till about 9:30pm. Gets woken for school at 8am.

G1raffe · 06/03/2016 20:03

We couldn't get up for school at 8 (wish we could!) daughters need to leave at 8.30 for school and getting dressed, washed, fed, shoes on etc takes more than half an hour.

DrCoconut · 06/03/2016 20:10

DS2 is 4 and on an early night is in bed for 9. He just doesn't sleep early. On the rare occasions he does go to sleep at say 7, he will be wide awake around 11 and good to go for a few hours after his nap! I have to wake him just before 8 on school days and he sleeps in till about 9 at weekends. It's fine, I couldn't cope with an early riser, there should only be one 5 or even 6 o'clock in my day!

iMatter · 06/03/2016 20:15

When my boys were 7 (and 8 and 9...) they were in bed at 7 and asleep by 7.15/7.30

iMatter · 06/03/2016 20:19

And Yy to previous posters. Do what works for you.

My DC have always been early to bed but they need it and are early risers (no matter what time they go to bed).

They are now 10 and 11 and go to bed for 8, read til 8.30 and wake at 6.30/7. Works for us.

JennyOnAPlate · 06/03/2016 20:21

Dd1 has just turned 8. She's in bed for 7.30 and is allowed to read until 8. She's very often too tired to read though so goes straight to sleep.

Witchend · 06/03/2016 20:24

Mine were lights out at 7.30 at that age. No disturbing in the morning before 7 school days, 8 weekends. They had plenty of books to amuse themselves quietly.
Ds sometimes comes through and gets into bed with us if he's woken earlier, but he still has to stay quiet.

gingercat02 · 06/03/2016 20:31

We were letting DS (8 in July) stay up until 8 recently but he has been tried (crying whingeing grumpy) so back to 7:30 from tonight. Later on Friday and Saturday. Up at 7am on school days 8am at weekends

Bunnyjo · 06/03/2016 20:47

DS, 4yo, is asleep between 7pm and 7:30pm and awake by 6:30pm every morning.

DD, 8yo, is allowed to read until 8pm then it's lights out. She's usually asleep 5 to 10 mins after. She's also an early riser and is up around 6am every morning.

We have tried giving them a later bedtime, but they still rise early and are really cranky and tired by early evening and the vicious cycle of over tiredness begins. I was also an early riser, still am, and DH leaves at 4:30am for work. So, in some respects, early bedtimes works better for us as DH gets a chance to unwind for an hour or so once the kids are in bed.

Cressandra · 06/03/2016 21:30

7.45 and 8pm at that age. Both are often awake by 7am but no lights are allowed on until 7.

EllieJayJay · 08/03/2016 23:59

Thank you so much for all the messages!!!

I'm still completely lost at what time we should put them to bed, make them try to sleep... We're currently going with 8.30 and thinking of separating rooms soon

I've been a strong"no screen" rule and DP sometimes lets them, so no more screens after 8! We just want them to sleep well

Les hope we can

And it's not lost on me I should also drop screens late at night ;)

OP posts:
RiverTam · 09/03/2016 11:27

I would zap screens at least an hour before bedtime. Although DD is a late-to-bed in comparison to most on this thread, she rarely watches TV after dinner at 6.

'Making' DD try to sleep has never worked for us. But she stays in her room after 7.30 stories, so even if she's not asleep till 9 we can get on with our evening. Tbh I quite like it, especially in the summer when the evenings are long and we can all be pottering about in the garden.

longlivetheking · 09/03/2016 11:43

All mine are usually in bed by 7 (aged 3, 6 & 8) after having had a bath and a story. They're all usually asleep within 20 mins, max. They are early risers, well, 6-6.30

molyholy · 09/03/2016 11:49

My 7yo - bed at 7.00. She reads to me and I read her a story. She will then sing her head off for about 20 mins, but is asleep by 8.

Weekends - We allow her to watch nextflix on the ipad in bed. She usually goes up at 8ish (sometimes earlier) to watch a film, asleep by 9.30ish.

If there is a family party or whatever for example, she is allowed to stay up until whenever but tbh, she's not one for staying up very late.
